by Kimberly A Rogers

Isamnion — Capital of the Elven kingdom of Fortriu. Home of Auberon and Titania. Hidden in the Smokey Mountains.

The Post — National headquarters for the Therian military. Located in the Therian capital city of Haven

Shadowed Lands — Large swath of territory running through the center of North America except where Elven, Therian, and Human settlements have been planted. Many other paranormal species, including dragons, live or migrate through the territory but they are not monitored by Therian authorities. Partially held in check by the barrier on the East Coast.

  Terms

  General

  Aita — Elvish for ‘dad/father’

  Aitona — Elvish for ‘grandfather’

  Ama — Elvish for ‘mom/mother’

  Amona — Elvish for ‘grandmother’

The Barrier — System of fences and failsafe canals that protect densely populated areas from infringement by Shadowed Creatures. Partially completed, primarily protects the Eastern Seaboard and portions of the West Coast. Can be crossed overland through sanctioned checkpoints.

Elf-struck — Condition where Humans are entranced with Elves. Varies from broad fascination with the entire race to an intense obsession-like focus on an individual Elf. Can lead to violent encounters with perceived rivals for the Elf’s attention.

First Year Rage — Emotional state experienced by members of Clan Felidae during the first year of marriage. They are prone to irrational overreactions to perceived and real threats to their mate and the marriage bond. The Beast’s instinctive reactions are more difficult to control during this time frame and newlywed couples are expected to avoid situations that might trigger the First Year Rage.

Fringe — A rebel movement among Therians that supports casting off the Therian Way and asserting Therian domination over Elves and humans primarily through violent methods.

Fringe-sympathizer — Any Therian who supports the Fringe cause even if they do not necessarily support the movement’s methods.

Mezarium — More commonly referred to as ‘mez’. Elvish organic holographic device that uses soundwaves to form a blue visual picture of the person using the device. Each device stores all mez footage ever received by that device and cannot be hacked by human spy networks. The mez system connects to all Elven and Therian homes. Generally not found in other paranormal communities, however.

Peace Marriage — Marriages between Elves and Therians. They can be arranged, a love match, or both. All participants volunteer to be among the peace marriage candidates with the exception of the firstborn son and daughter of previous peace marriages who are bound to enter a peace marriage with a pureblood Therian.

Rhai cudd — Elvish name for Therians, which means ‘hidden one.’ Refers both to their hidden natures and their history of being one of the hidden races.

Roaming Commandant — A Therian commandant not attached to a specific military outpost. Instead, he or she roams the kingdom, inspecting outposts and investigating violations as indicated by an outpost’s mission failure or higher than average complaint rates, and then fixes the problem. This can include a forcible removal of detracting personnel no matter how high up the chain of command. Roaming commandants report directly to the High General.

Roanoke Vanishing — Tracker name for the most difficult type of vanishing. Person or family disappears without a trace or any sign pointing to a trail for Trackers to follow in an attempt to locate the victim or victims. Usually proves fatal to victims. Can also contribute to the demise of Trackers assigned to work the vanishing.

Trackers — An elite independent organization of Trackers who serve as the advance eyes and ears of the kingdom. They find Therians and Elves alike, criminal and missing civilians. Occasionally work in conjunction with the military but using a more lax system of regulations. Sometimes will work with the paranormal community outside of the Therian and Elven races, but these instances are extremely rare.

Week of Weddings — The week when King Caderyn ordered all peace marriages with both participants of age to be fulfilled in the aftermath of the events of Tiger’s Paw.

  Grimms — Aimed at Elves

  Leaf-ear — Aimed at Elves and Elf-born

Mistoa — Meaning ‘mixed’, a derogatory term for Elf-born

Norrishkau — Vulgar term never used in polite company
