With Anna beside me, supporting me, loving me, I had no doubt I would survive anything that came my way. We would survive.

Together, with Hazel, we would make a new life in Idaho.

And the three of us would be a true family.

“You might have a wife with a bald streak across her head. That okay with you?”

I chuckled. “You could totally shave your head, and I wouldn’t care.”

  Her brow shot up. “Really?”

  Nate rapped on my window.

I turned away from her and pushed the button, rolling it down.

  I met Nate’s his gaze.

“You were right. He’s from The Company. Luke got him to talk. A new owner has recently taken control of The Company. I don’t know if you’ve met her or not, but she was there the night we freed Tracker. She’s The General’s daughter, our half-sister. And she’s apparently on a man-hunt for any dreg she can capture. You were the first one her scouts spotted.”

I nodded. “We’ll pack our bags and head out of town tonight. I’ll call a moving van to pick up the furniture next week. What are you guys going to do?”

Nate shrugged. “Stay hidden in the maze. Wait this out. I met the woman. She’s not a ruthless killer. I think she’s a scientist. She doesn’t scare me. I’m kind of curious to see what she wants with us.”

“Don’t be too curious,” I muttered. “Or you’ll find yourself back in that prison. I wouldn’t trust anyone from The Company.”

He nodded, his eyes darkening. “I know.” He glanced over at Anna. “I’m glad Jacob has you. You take care of him, all right?”

She smiled. “I plan to. We’ll take care of each other.”

Nate grinned. “That’s good to hear. I’m happy for you both.”

I stuck my hand out the window and shook Nate’s hand. “Thanks, man. I appreciate everything.”

He nodded, then patted the hood. “Take care.”

  He walked away.

Anna and I were silent a moment, watching Nate disappear into the dark forest.

“Are you going to say goodbye to the other dregs?”

“Later. They’ll all meet us back at the house.” I reached over and squeezed her hand again. “You ready to start a new adventure in Idaho? You really want to do this?”

She smiled and nodded. “Yes. I do.”

  I started the car.

  “Then let’s go get Hazel.”

I held Anna’s hand all the way home. And when we arrived, Hazel rushed into my arms. I hugged her close, overcome with emotion. With so much happiness.

This was my life now. My future.

  Anna and Hazel.

It was more than I deserved.

  Better than I’d ever dreamed.

  And everything I’d always wanted.
