Cloutard’s face lit up as he took his copy. “Ah yes, the search for—”

“Sshhh, not here!” said Tom, glancing furtively into the file containing their next adventure. “We already know the walls in Russia have ears.”

  Somewhere in New Mexico

The officer at the gate watched the approaching Mercedes GLE Coupe curiously at it drew closer. As a rule, non-military personnel never visited the secret maximum-security facility. If he hadn’t been informed about the visit a few minutes earlier, he would already have sounded the alarm. But his instructions came from the very top, and he had asked no questions. “A high-ranking FBI agent will be arriving to interrogate a prisoner,” his superior officer had told him.

“Papers please, sir,” he said when the car pulled up. The man handed him a letter and his FBI identification, but said nothing. The officer checked the man’s papers and ran everything through the usual security checks. Nothing unusual. His computer gave him the green light to let the man enter the high-security wing.

“Thank you, sir. Welcome to the site. Major Tanner is expecting you and will show you to the interview room, as requested.”

The man nodded and parked his car in the space allotted to him. Once he had passed through a series of additional security measures, he was led into an interview room. Apart from a table and two chairs, the room was bare. No windows, no one-way mirror.

“The microphones and cameras have been deactivated, sir, as stipulated in the instructions we received from FBI headquarters. The detainee will be along shortly.”

The man nodded and Major Tanner left the room. Seconds later, the door opened again and a slim, dark-skinned woman, her hands and feet shackled, was led in.

Ossana Ibori looked at the man. When he stood and walked over to her, she looked him up and down, raising her eyebrows in amazement.

  “So it worked,” she said.

A triumphant grin appeared momentarily on Noah’s face. Until just recently, he had been unable to leave his wheelchair—a fate for which he had Tom Wagner to thank.

“Your assassin failed. Wagner’s still alive. And to add insult to injury, Tom killed his brother, so your assassin is . . . upset.”

Ossana was about to say something, but Noah raised his hand angrily.

“And they’ve recovered the Nibelung treasure! Why didn’t we know about that?”

“Because not even Palffy was all-knowing,” Ossana said defensively. “There was nothing about it in his papers.”

Noah smiled disarmingly. His status within the organization had undoubtedly improved if even Ossana was explaining herself to him. And now that the organization—in fact, the man at the very top—had enabled him to walk again, they could be sure of his unconditional loyalty.

“It doesn’t matter. It was not easy to find out where you were. The Americans take their ‘persons of interest’ very seriously. But we have extended our range of influence, as you can see.”

“When am I getting out of this shithole?” Ossana asked.

“Soon. We still need to make a few arrangements.”

“Does Daddy have a new project yet?”

“Yes. And this time we know how to stop Wagner and his little crew from getting in our way.”

  “A trap?”

  “Better. Much better.”
