Pit: The A**hole Club Series

“He didn’t trust it. Suit started acting weird the moment I mentioned you. He wanted to know who attended the parties, who the other sponsors were, who their teams were.
“He became obsessed with your team and the races. I was growing tired of it all. I had to leave Mexico because Marquis grew suspicious of me. My sister knew I was up to something so I couldn’t hide out for long in the expensive villa Marquis keeps her in in Florida.
“Then suit gave me the orders to change the races and to make it look like one of the other teams was a threat. I was so frustrated with this shit and I had bookies breathing down my neck. With all of that going on, I swear I didn’t realize Marquis was too silent. I didn’t think to ask questions about how the suit was pulling off the last races without Marquis,” he says the last part like he’s going to sob.
Sadly, I think it’s for his own well-being and not his brother-in-law’s. It looks like he’s been getting setup from the beginning. I don’t feel bad for him at all.
“You do realize you were set up for the fall here. That car his body was found in is registered in your name. You brought him here to Vander. Your men tried to intercept his delivery to Knight and I’m pretty sure he was onto your ass and about to call you on it all. If anyone knows that, you’re fucked,” I say with a huge smile.
He palms his face. I’ll bet everything on the fact that the need to know who the sponsors and drivers were was to get them to the fake races. It might have even been to pay off those guys that pulled that shit with Leo and Skittles.
The real fact is, this guy is useless to me. I’ve gotten all I needed.
“Does that mean it’s my turn?” I smile. Perfect timing.

I don’t know what I was expecting when Ox told me to follow him. I was so relieved to see Shawna safe and alive, I’d forgotten about my revenge. Not anymore, just seeing this guy’s face makes me want to black out with rage.
Pit stands, picks up his gun and moves to the wall where I notice my guys are. Their presence means more to me than they can know. My father was right, they are there for everything.
“He’s all yours,” Pit says.
The small restraint I was holding onto slips away. I rush across the room and flip over the table Danny’s sitting at. Papers fly in the air.
I ignore them cascading back to the floor as I send my boot into the center of Danny’s chest. He flies back, taking the chair with him. I’m suddenly glad I put on work boots.
“Well, damn,” someone says from behind me, but I’m too gone to know who.
I snatch the chair from under Danny and bring it over my head before I send it crashing down on him. He groans and tries to scramble away.
“You stay fucking still,” I holler. “You stay there and take this shit like you made her.”
I hit him with the chair again before tossing it to the side. His legs are sitting at an odd angle—one over the other—so I lift my leg and come down on his top one, breaking it. The way he screams brings a smile to my face.
“Oh, get ready. That’s just the first break. You like beating on women? Get your ass up and hit me. How many times did you break her ribs, you piece of shit,” I snarl as I kick him in the ribs, not once, not twice, but three times until I hear the distinct sound of breaking bone.
He grabs his side with one hand. I might be small in height, but my mother taught me how to use my weight to my advantage. I circle his body to where his other arm is stretched out and jump in the air, landing on his hand and arm.
I stomp on his hand for good measure. He pleads for me to stop like the bitch he is. Instead, I kick him in the stomach like Shawna told me he did her.
You see, I had her tell me everything. I just listened to the nightmare she’s lived through. When I say I have no mercy, I. Have. None.
I kick him in the head as he continues to plead. “Did you stop when she begged you? No, you got worse. The more she pleaded the more you beat her. Fuck you,” I growl and kick him in the stomach again.
Knowing she went through all of that sends me to a dark place. I don’t care what happens to this bastard. I just want him to hurt like he hurt her.
I sit on his chest, grab him by his hair and start to pound his head against the floor. That’s when the only person who could bring me back wraps his arms around me.
“Enough, baby, enough. If you kill him that will change who you are forever. He’s not worth it. Let go,” Pit says in my ear.
My chest heaves and tears start to flow. I release Danny and stand. Pit comes up with me.
I turn into his chest and wrap around him. He coos for me to calm down and rubs my back. I’m completely drained, but this is finally over.

I look over Skittles’ head. “Show them how to get to the apartment from here,” I say to Ox.
He looks at me in surprise, then nods. I tighten my hold on Skittles to lend her some of my strength before I kiss her forehead. I release her.
“I’ll be right behind you. Let me clean up here,” I say.
She nods and turns to follow Ox. The guys all surround her as they follow them out. Rome is the only one who stays behind.
I walk over to Danny and lift him up to sit. He whimpers and groans. Killing him would have destroyed Skittles in the morning.
Not me.
I wrap my arms around his head and snap his neck. I stand and let his body fall like the sack of shit he is. I look Rome in the eyes.
“We good?”
Without a word, he nods. I grunt, step over Danny’s body and forget this shit ever happened. I’ll sleep just fine tonight.

I sit in the window seat at my place, talking to Shawna on the phone. It’s been a week. I wish she would have stayed with me longer, but she left this morning.
“You sure you don’t want to come back,” I say into the phone.
“Thanks, Ven, but I need some time to myself. I have a lot to figure out,” she says.
“I’m here for you. Whatever you need, say the word.”
“You’ve done more than enough, and I’ve taken up more than enough of your time. It’s time for you to spend time with your man. He misses you,” she replies.
Pit has been giving me space to handle things with Shawna, but he calls several times a day to check on us. He has sent flowers every day. Okay, when he couldn’t stay away for too long, we did have a quicky in the powder room downstairs in my brownstone off the mud area. All right, all right, it was twice.
When I told him Shawna left, he told me to come to the bar tonight. I should be getting ready, but I feel a little guilty about running out the first night Shawna is gone, like I couldn’t wait to get rid of her.
“He’ll be fine. I can come to your place,” I offer hopefully.
Shawna laughs. “Goodbye, Ven. Go do something productive with your life. I’m going to take a bath and journal or something.”
“Okay, love you, Shawnnie.”
She releases a small laugh as I use her childhood nickname. We end the call and I sit staring out of the window. So much in my life has changed in that ten weeks.
I’ll be honest. This will be the first time I stay with Pit and can focus solely on him. I’m a little nervous. What if we can’t make this work and all the feelings change without a smoking gun to our heads.
What if the thrill is gone without the damsel in distress? I’m a lot to take on. I work long hours, I curse like a sailor, and I have a temper like a volcano.
“You’re him.”
I can’t help laughing at my thoughts. I am so much Pit’s twin it isn’t even funny. I smile. Maybe I’ll give it one more night, give him more time to miss me.
My doorbell rings bringing me from my musing. I get up, wondering who it could be. Pit has a key, so I know it’s not him. That man will never ring the bell to a door he considers his.
I wonder if we’ll move in together. We would definitely need to move in here. His loft doesn’t have enough parking or closet space for me.
I’m pulled from my thoughts as I get downstairs and open the door. It’s Ox. He peers down at me with a smile on his face.
“Hey you,” I sing.
Then it hits me. I’ve never invited Ox to my home before. I frown.
“How do you know where I live?” I ask aloud.
“I rode with Rome to pick Pit up the other night. And your man gave me the address again tonight to make sure I got here. He’s been expecting you,” he says with a broad grin.
Ox is a handsome man. Huge, but handsome. He once told me he has some Greek mixed in him. I can totally see that.
I groan. “Is he serious?”
“Look, I’ve never seen him this way about anyone,” he says but his phone rings cutting off anything else he was about to reveal.
He barks out a laugh and shows me the phone before answering it. “Man, I’m at her front door.”
He hands the phone over to me. I roll my eyes and wave Ox inside as I take the stairs back up to the main level of my home. Pit doesn’t even let me fully breathe hello before he starts barking orders.
“Yo, what’s taking you so long? You should’ve been here. I have meetings tonight, I wanted you here before those started. Pack your bags and get here,” he says.
“Pack my bags?”
“You’re staying with me. My place is closer to the bar and your shop.”
“But my place is bigger.” I pout.
“I work late, baby. That drive will take me too long to get to you every morning.”
“You could always go home. I mean, I leave for work not long after you get off anyway,” I tease.
“I don’t care if I lived in a hole under Vander City, your ass will be with me.”
“Baby, are you sure you want me in your space? We don’t have to rush things. Maybe I—”
“I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about. All I hear is noise. Pack your bags and get here.”
“What if I don’t want to hang out tonight? You already said you’re going to be busy. I’ll come tomorrow.”
He moves around on the other end. It sounds like he’s moving through the bar. The music dies down and I can hear him more clearly with his next words.
“Woman, if you don’t pack your bags and get your ass here to this bar, I’m going to spank your ass when I get my hands on you.” Then he hangs up.
I look at the phone with my mouth hanging open. “Asshole.”
“We good?” Ox says as I hand him his phone back.
“Yeah, I’ll be there,” I mutter.
He shakes his head. “My orders were to get you there. I don’t leave until you do.”
I throw my head back and roll my eyes. “Fine, have a seat in the living room. I need to get ready and pack my bags apparently.”
I stomp to my bedroom like a brat, but secretly, I’m a little turned on and happy he wants me with him. I grab a leather duffel bag and crack up to myself. I have a spend the night bag.
Before Pit that wasn’t happening. I wasn’t trying to spend the night at anyone’s place. I can’t stop smiling as I pack my things. I’m definitely going to need a few bags.
Yup, we need to figure out this situation because packing sleepover bags ain’t it for me. My units and shoes each need their own bags.
I groan at all the stuff I’ve packed. It dawns on me as I go for my makeup bag that I never offered Ox anything to drink and I might take a little bit longer than I thought. I’ve been taught better than that. I turn to go apologize and see if I can get him something.
“Hey, Ox. I’m sorry. Do you what something to—”
Before I can finish my sentence, all hell breaks loose. My favorite bench seat window explodes, glass flying everywhere. I’m confused at first.
“Skittles get down,” Ox bellows as he charges me with his big body, knocking me to the ground.
The wind is knocked out of me. Meanwhile, bullets continue to light up my home. When it clicks that someone’s shooting the place up, I have a mix of emotions, fury being one of them.
It took me years to get this place the way I wanted. Who the hell could be shooting at me? I push at Ox to get off of me. I need to go get my gun.
He moves but keeps me pinned down with one arm. “Stay down,” he commands.
“I need my gun,” I say.
“You need to stay down.”
The shooting stops and Ox jumps into action. I didn’t even see him pull the gun in his hands. He gets to the window and nearly stands in it as he fires down into the street below.
The sound of his gunfire and screeching tires echoes back to me. He curses and steps out of the window. I stand and look around my place. There are bullet holes everywhere.
“Get your things. We need to go,” Ox says sharply.
He already has his phone in his hand. I close my eyes. Oh, Pit isn’t going to take this well. Looks like I’ll have to make that little ass loft work.
Chapter 40
Secrets & Skeletons
Pit
* * *
Skittles is out of her mind if she thinks I’m waiting one more day to spend the night with her in my arms. I don’t care if it is six in the morning when we get out of here.
I look at the time on my phone when I hang up the call with her. She probably won’t get here before my first appointment tonight. I grimace. Knowing when she arrives and not being able to get up and go to her is going to drive me insane.
As soon as I sit the door to my back room opens and Blake steps in. Like I told Ox, I knew he was coming. Marquis’ death was sure to make this meeting happen.
“This is no longer your problem,” he says with no greeting. He doesn’t even take a seat.
Now, one thing I can tell you about this man. I’ve never seen him with a hair out of place and I’ve never seen him show his emotions if they weren’t positive or a smile to make you think he’s unfazed.
In this moment, he looks like it might explode. I rock back in my seat and fold my arms over my chest. I study the man closely.
“I’m not sure I appreciate the way you’re running up on me. I’ve been handling the situation and planned to tell you about it,” I say.
“You haven’t handled shit because you don’t know what you’re dealing with. I’ve just come in from Mexico. Danny Clavier isn’t the only one being framed for Marquis’ death.” I sit up straighter at this. I hadn’t shared what I knew with Mr. Knight yet because I still had these blank spaces I wanted to fill in. “Someone wanted it to look like I set Danny up and then made him disappear after.”
“You’re shitting me,” I breathe.
“No, the Castro family and I go back. I once thought they were connected to the person responsible for my younger brother’s death,” he says.
This is new to me. “How did he die?”
“He was waiting for a client to bring him some evidence in the city center. Instead, a car drove through and hit him. He died on impact,” he says.
“Wait, what?” I shake my head. “They tried to hit my brother, Leo in the city center during a race. He was lured there too.”
“I know. I should have followed my own advice. You made this personal and you can’t see the forest for the trees. I’ve made the same mistake. Otherwise, we would have seen someone trying to destroy the empire I’ve been building to leave to you,” he says and finally takes a seat, looking weary.
I knit my brows. Leave to me? I’ve always thought he sent Ox to work for me because someday he’d take over and we’d already have trust and understanding built in for Ox’s smooth transition.
“What do you mean, leave to me?”
“I skipped a very important lesson with you. One my father taught me, and his father taught him. You never let them learn what’s most important to you and you never leave what you love vulnerable.” He laughs bitterly.
“I probably didn’t teach it to you, because you’ve been so jaded. I should have.
“I watched my little brother fail the lesson and it cost him everything. I will not tell you everything because this isn’t my story to tell, but I’ll tell you now—you weren’t sent to die with me that day in that prison bathroom by coincidence. The person who ordered the hits knew who you were to me.
“It was meant for me to watch you die. Their mistake wasn’t underestimating you. It was underestimating the blood of a Knight. It takes more to bring us to our ruin when you face us head-on.”
“Hold the fuck up,” I shout and jump to my feet.
“I planned to take this to my grave. Claire became a pawn. That was never meant to happen. I owed it to her not to disgrace her name,” he says.
“I’m going to stop your ass right there. First, your ass is sitting there trying to tell me you’re my father and second, you’re going to tell me I’m a disgrace to my mother’s name. Fuck you,” I snarl.
“You have our temper. Always have. Calm down and listen. I never said you were a disgrace and I never said I was your father. I would be proud to be.
“You and the twins are my prized possessions, same as Ox. I’ve loved the four of my brother’s children as if you were all my own. I couldn’t be more proud of our Leo. I’m doing all I can from the shadows to guide Scarlett. And you and Ox, you two are better men than I could ever be, and your father would have been proud of you both,” he says with pride in his eyes.
“For years, I’ve been in your lives from behind the veil. When I saw you walk into that prison bathroom, that was how they got the best of me. I was distracted by my own blood walking into the hell I was forced into. It was like my baby brother had walked in. You have so much of your father in you.
“It was then that Thaddeus Pitman went too far. He was jealous of a ghost. Living a dead man’s dream and still bitter.
“Always wanting to be something he wasn’t. Claire had chosen Thaddeus, but he never did right by her. He could never be satisfied.” He shakes his head and tightens his jaw.
