Marge in Charge and the Missing Orangutan

Page 4

by Isla Fisher

“I want to see Oliver,” wails a girl in pigtails.

I give my little brother a huge hug, but then I realize that Marge is missing again. I can’t believe that Mommy told Marge to keep an eye on us, but we’re the ones who should be keeping an eye on Marge!

  “Ohh aahhh oooh ahhh!”

We turn in surprise. A grunting sound is coming from the corner of the cage. Then we see some rustling in a bush inside Oliver’s enclosure.

“Look,” the teacher announces to her group of schoolchildren. “What’s that?”

“Oliver must be back from the vet!” I feel so relieved as I grin at Jakey.

But it’s Marge who pops her head out of the bush!

She is wearing an orange hat and thumping her chest. To be honest, she looks more like a traffic cone than an orangutan, but no one seems to mind.

Marge swings from rope to rope,

then she shrieks as she grooms herself,

before she runs to the glass and beats it exactly like Oliver does.

There is such a commotion that the zookeeper comes to investigate. He looks extremely angry, but just then a bigger crowd of children starts to appear. They are clapping and cheering, and no one minds at all that it isn’t the real Oliver.

Jakey shuffles forward and starts playing with Marge like he usually does with Oliver. He shakes his head “no” and Marge copies him. Then he starts laughing and Marge mimics him too.

Marge is even better than Oliver at being an orangutan.

Jakey is happy and so am I—but I haven’t even told you the best part yet.

After Marge’s show, the zookeeper lets me meet Katie the Chameleon up close.

She has a long curly tail, and when Marge puts her on top of her head, she turns all the colors of the rainbow. I finally get to sketch her, and I use every single one of my colored pencils!

Jakey and I look at each other and share a secret smile. We truly have the best babysitter in the world!
