  His words nearly take my breath away but fill me with a joy that seems unnatural – and unfair to those who don’t get to experience it. I follow along with John and Roman as they give me the grand tour, pointing out all the various amenities and quirks of the place. But truthfully, I’m hearing very little of what they’re saying. I’m still wrapped up in a tight cloud of disbelief.

  When the tour is over, Roman and I are standing out on the back deck again. I can’t keep the smile off my face. Kinsey is running around like a madwoman. She is clearly absorbing and processing this all a lot better than I am. John tells us he’ll give us a minute and then walks Kinsey back into the house to give her a tour of her room.

  I walk to the edge of the deck and lean on the railing, overlooking the cove and the ocean beyond. Roman is standing next to me, trailing his fingers down my back.

  “You okay?” he asks.

  I look at him and stupidly feel the tears rolling down my cheeks, unable to speak. I don’t know why I’m crying, other than I’m deliriously happy. Happier than I ever thought I could be. I finally nod as I wipe away the tears.

  “Yeah, I’m pretty okay,” I manage, my voice husky.

  He smiles and pulls me to him, wrapping me in a tight embrace. “I love you, Scarlet.”

  “I love you too.”

  He turns me so we’re both looking at the house – our new house. I take a moment to soak it all in and let it wash over me once more that this is where we’ll be living – where Kinsey is going to grow up. Where we might possibly even be raising more children. Who knows what the future holds? All I know is that as long as Roman is by my side, it’s a future I’m looking forward to.

  “Welcome home,” he says, gently kissing my forehead.

  I smile. Although I’ve never had a place I could truly call my own, with Roman and Kinsey beside me, that’s exactly what this feels like – a home.
