“Every order that I agree with,” Adelyn's eyebrows lowered into a frown.

  “Every. Order.”

Adelyn let out a sound of frustration and twisted her head around to look at Donovan. “Did you agree to this, too?”

Donovan had a bewildered look on his face, but he nodded nonetheless. “It is a sacred oath that our ruler's personal guard takes before being allowed to perform duties and serve with him. We have all taken this oath.”

Adelyn turned back to meet Cain's gaze. “Fine. I'll take your stupid oath,” she grumbled, but inside she was secretly pleased and touched that he was allowing her into his guard even if she was a pretty useless member by comparison. She didn't have much family, and she certainly didn't have many friends. For the first time in her life, she felt as though she had a family that she wanted to love and protect.

Biting her cheek to stop the happy smile from escaping her lips, she nodded, but couldn't stop the tears from welling up in her eyes. “I agree.”

Cain nodded curtly, then released her chin and walked back to the manor, ignoring Gideon's shouts of displeasure as the other daemon followed him inside the manor, pointing out all the reasons why she was a huge liability to them.

Derion and Pytho walked up to Adelyn and each grabbed one of her arms, squeezing lightly and smiling at her. Donovan squeezed both shoulders and leaned down to speak in her ear.

  “Welcome home, sister.”

  To be continued...

The daemons will return in the next Daemon Saga novel.
