“And your news? Something that is more important than growing the potatoes to make more vodka?”
Blackett grew serious again, “At the request of General Vlasov, our OSS has been assisting with an investigation into the deaths of several senior Soviet military officials.”
“Oh? Who were they?” Rhuzkoi asked with only minimal interest. He knew there had been a bloody purge at the top ranks of the Kremlin as defeat had become inevitable.
“Military intelligence mostly, some NKVD officers … we think they just knew too much.”
“Knew what exactly?”
“Information about weapons,” Blackett said matter of factly, watching his counterpart’s face for a sign that he knew anything. There was none, and he continued.
“Specifically, technology captured from the Nazis, jet engines, rockets, tanks … quite an arsenal.”
“Oh Boze moi, I need another drink.”
Blackett smiled, his fish was hooked, now to reel him in.
“The trail of dead officers leads right to the top, to Stalin’s doorstep.”
“Don’t worry,” said Rhuzkoi intently, “we’ll find him.”
“Sure you will … and with our help. Do you want to join us?”
“Where are we going?”
“East.”

“STALIN FOUND”
Unconfirmed reports from Moscow describe the burnt remains of a body found in a crashed transport plane several hundred miles east of the capital as “almost certainly being those of the Soviet dictator.”
There is speculation over the identity due to the incompleteness of the remains. This has been attributed to the activity of wolves in the area. As a result, identification by dental records will not be possible. A press release from the provisional government states “… that the documents accompanying the body, in addition to the physical features which match those of the former Chairman, have led to our confirming ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ that the remains are those of Joseph Stalin.”
