“My father tries, I know that he does, Garrison. But he makes bad judgements. I shouldn’t blame him for it. The drinking, the half baked schemes, the great grand plans for the never going to work. He wasn’t like that before he went overseas. He did his duty, and he sacrificed.” I love how Garrison listens, so patiently.
“He sacrificed, Mama sacrificed. We all did. I’m not really sure that he was repaid for all that sacrifice. Okay, shit tell it like it is, he is owed. What he was paid, for what he did? That’s not service. That’s abuse.” He takes my hand.
“What I do for him, it’s never going to be enough. I can’t take care of a full-grown man. And I can’t fulfill his needs. His need to be a man, to be a provider. To be the head of his house. And I can’t bring Mama back.” I have ton brush a tear with the back of my hand. Garrison kisses it away tenderly, from my cheek, then from my knuckle.
“I just thought that if I made a sacrifice for him, well… It was a stupid idea. And I couldn’t do it.”

Garrison
I hold her chin and look into her eyes. “No, Tammi. It was a fucking sensational idea. Worthy of a real hero. That’s one of the most heroic stories I have heard. And believe me, I know some stories.”
“Garrison. I appreciate you saying that.”
“Mikey gave me the marker he had over your father.” I tell her. She can know this much now. “I’m putting a unit together. I will train them for Mikey. And I could use somebody to have my back. To help me out, to make sure it’s all done by the book. I’m gonna see if your daddy can’t be that.”
“Oh, Garrison…”
“I’m serious, Tammi. It will be a stretch for him. But if he’s the man you’ve told me he is, that stretch will be just enough to stretch hm back into shape.”
All of which is true. I can’t tell her the way I plan to make it work, it would make her worry for her father. I know he can take it, though. And it will be a second chance for him. And there is no reason she should ever need to know the details.
Besides, we have plans to make, she and I. And I know she took a test this morning. I can’t wait to see the result.
