“Fuck that! Then you’re brining your new boyfriend.” Her brow wrinkles across her forehead in an adorable look of confusion. “I’ll be your new boyfriend. At least, for this wedding shit.” Her eyebrows shoot up to her hairline.

“Yeah, I don’t think that’s how that works, Dane. I’m pretty sure that would be asking for trouble.” She pauses and looks down at her hands, seeming to let me words sinks in. “You would do that for me?” She asks me quietly. I take her hand and lead her to the couch. Christian and Ava are still in the kitchen, talking quietly. This probably is a bad idea, but I can’t stand the thought of Sophie having to face that idiot on her own, especially if he’s bringing his new girlfriend. The girlfriend that he cheated on her with.

“Yes, I would do that for you. I wanna help you.”

“Why?” She’s so damn cute when she’s confused.

“We’re friends. Why wouldn’t I wanna help you?”

“I mean...” she lifts her shoulder in a small shrug.

“We’ve known each other for years. We’re friends, and friends help each other.”

“Yes, we’ve known each other from school and stuff, but... I mean... we’re not really friends, are we?”

“Did we just hand out last night? And aren’t we hanging out now?” She nods in affirmation. “Then we’re friends.”

“I guess so. So, you really wanna pretend to be my boyfriend? You know I’ll have a lot of events to go to. This isn’t like a regular wedding?”

  “What do you mean?”

“Tommy’s family comes from old money in Savannah. There’re all kinds of extra stuff we have to do for this wedding. Stuff normal people don’t do.”

“Whatever it is, I’m down. C’mon, Soph. Just let me help you. Being my fake girlfriend can’t be all that bad, right?” I say, bumping her shoulder with my arm.

“You really wanna be my fake boyfriend?”

  “Yep. Let’s do this, girl.”

“I’m probably gonna regret this, but OK,” she says, the corners of her mouth turn up slightly.

“C’mon. Let’s go back in the kitchen so I can get my fake girlfriend another drink.” I help pull her up, off the couch.

“Yeah, I think I’m gonna need a few,” she mutters under her breath.

We hang out for a while longer, before the girls decide they’re both ready to head home. They both stopped drinking long ago, so I feel OK about letting them drive. I know I’m not their dad, but I would never let anyone leave my place if I didn’t think they should be driving.

Since Callie is over at Asher and Christian’s, he decides to stay the night at my place. I certainly can’t blame the man. Who wants to be kept up all night listening to those two have sex? Definitely not me.

Before the girls leave, Sophie and I make plans to get together tomorrow so we can talk about the wedding and how we’re going to pull off this whole fake relationship thing. Surely it won’t be as bad as she thinks. I just don’t want her to have to face that asshole, Kyle, and his new girlfriend, all alone.

Christian and I say goodbye to the girls and head back into the house. I pick up the few empty beer bottles off the coffee table and take them to the recycling bin in the kitchen. Christian’s there, waiting for me, leaned against the counter with his arms crossed over his chest, and a smirk on his face.

“Captain Save-A-Hoe comes to the rescue again.”

“Shut up, man. I’m just helping out a friend,” I say, wiping off the counter. I can’t stand having a dirty kitchen.

“With what exactly?” he questions me.

“Just helping her with some stuff for her sister’s wedding. That’s all.” If Sophie wants him to know her business, she can be the one to tell him, not me.

“She’s an awesome girl, ya know? But I don’t think you ever noticed.”

“What do you mean?” I ask him.

“If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m not about to clue you in.”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” My brows wrinkle in confusion.

“You’ll see. You’ll figure it out soon enough, man.”

“Why are you talking in riddles? Just spit it out.”

“Nah, it’s more fun this way. I’m going to bed, man. See you in the morning.”

“Whatever,” I say, shaking my head. I have no clue what he’s talking about, but I’m not going to worry about it. Of course, I’ve noticed how awesome Sophie is. She’s a great girl. Maybe someday I can have a girl just like her.
