She flipped through the pages of my old passport. “Well, you probably needed a new one anyway; the pages are almost full.”

I sagged against the wall, making the bed move beneath me. “They didn’t even ask me if I wanted my name changed.”

“But that guy wasn’t your dad. Miller was never your real name.”

“I know… but it was like my identity or whatever. I mean, maybe I’d be ready to change it at some point, but not now. It just feels… weird.”

Liv smiled, her warm eyes sympathetic as she reached over and squeezed my hand. “I’m glad you’re here,” her voice took on a happy note, “And I’m glad that you decided to take school more seriously.”

I smirked. “Yeah, well, after seeing photos online of Ashe in his honors getup at MIT, the least I could do is graduate high school.”

Our conversation died down as we focused on studying. After a while, I got up to stretch before changing over to math.

My phone buzzed again, and I didn’t even bother to look. It was Logan—he’d been texting me since his confession of love.

Liv popped up and darted out the door, probably going to the bathroom.

My phone buzzed again, and I picked it up to check the screen.

Logan: I meant what I said—I’m here for you.

  Logan: BBQ today. Join me?

  I blew out a tense breath and responded: I can’t. Finals—you know?

  Logan: You’re avoiding me.

Me: I need time. I need you to be my friend—only.

Logan: That’s not what it seemed like the other night.

Me: I’m not going to lie and act like there’s nothing between us, but it can’t go further. I can’t do that to Ashe.

The bubbles to indicate he was responding popped up and then disappeared.

I rubbed my temples as I watched the screen.

  Logan: Okay. I’ll wait.

Me: There’s nothing to wait for.

Logan: You’ll see. You two are too different. But I’ll be here when it’s over.

  Anger surged through me.

  Me: Gee, thanks…
