Afterword
The Wheat Field Tree
When I think of the hours we shared
From a time I can no longer reach,
I think of where we could have been paired,
Of a place we can no longer breach.
***
And when I go to the wheat field tree
On autumn afternoons,
I see the way that we used to be,
Close to the autumn moon.
***
High above the golden grain
The foliage flies with the crows,
Swept about in slanting rain
To the place of its last repose.
***
And I see the field of pink flowers,
We had all and nothing to do,
Lost in a mist of verdant hours,
When you turned from me, and I from you.
For My Dog
Let's fly off under the maples,
Two kites from their tight strings hurled.
Lead me again like you once did,
You my best friend in the world.
***
Scare the cat back into its tree.
Spy a hare in the snow and chase.
They wish to see you, I surmise,
Revive the primordial race.
***
Oh come back for another run!
To the school, the park, and downtown!
Put your nose in the clean white snow!
Shake the rain from your coat of brown!
***
For time upon this aging leash
Must soon leave my hand uncurled.
I need you here, boy, like you were.
You my best friend in the world.
Time Will Take You Away From Me
Time will take you away from me.
The ash will fall as you stand
In a place that's safe to see
The end of my part in your plan.
***
It cannot be stopped,
Nor changed, this decree:
Time will take you away from me.
***
Which way will you turn from the lane,
As I watch at the other end?
Such ignorance I do not feign,
Nor wisdom of the calling bend.
***
The kitchen table midnight shed
Of makeshift meals you ate,
Means time for you to go to bed,
While I sit with the empty plate.
***
The sweetness between us
Is sugar in tea.
Time will take you away from me.
***
Tomorrow when you wave goodbye
From the door of your school classroom,
The look will be there in your eye,
Of something deeper, something soon.
***
For you are in the know as well,
I've seen that look in passing,
From time to time between the swells
Of tears for mock reasons casting.
***
It's coming, you see,
Inevitably:
Time will take you away from me.
***
Time will take you away from me.
We cannot go hand in hand.
Time will take you away from me.
Let's enjoy time while we can.
Thank You For The Dream
To torture me with your beauty,
In a fever dream dreamt shrewdly,
Is both wonderful and cruel.
I love you, I hate you; please leave.
***
Or rather I would have you stay,
'Til the taste of my lunch goes gray,
I am your spider, Miss Muffet;
Keep eating your curds and whey.
***
Alas, it's I who need to move.
The pebble spinneth in its groove.
But thank you for the dream.
Wonderful, cruel, criminal; you.
Verdancy Frolics
Verdancy frolics in the wind,
Where does it go, and where has it been?
Verdancy frolics in the wind,
As does our love every now and then.
To Fancy A Journey
Love...
He, a fool, fancies a journey and thus embarks;
He flings his soul to the wind and it arcs,
Lethal, to some far off place in that fickle sky,
Where happier memories burn like leaves
That wither to ember but never die.
Snowy Mountain
One cold night in the mountain snows,
Up where the arctic wind blows,
I walked alone 'neath the whispering trees,
Alone in the mountain snows.
***
My boots pressed through the diamond white,
That shone in the bough-clawed starlight;
My eyes searched through the piney brush,
In the mountain snows that night.
***
Come along home, boy, come along home,
'Fore too much the air chills our bones;
Come back down to the cottage now,
Back down where the home fires glow.
***
And then I saw with a happy bark,
You dash through the powdered dark,
And we were from being to once had been,
Leaving the mountain alone again.
In The Tower
It was a lovely night in the tower,
During the blizzard that year;
We slept 'neath a quilt in each others' arms,
In a room on the highest tier.
***
Candlelight shimmered in winter gusts,
That swept through the black, black sky;
And you whispered your thoughts to me, sweetheart,
And I hung on your every sigh.
I remember that night so clearly now,
The night that our love took wing--
You and I in a far away world,
Where our dreams could dream anything.
***
It was a lovely night in the tower,
During the blizzard that year;
We slept 'neath a quilt in each others' arms,
In a room on the highest tier--
In a room on the highest tier.
In The Joy Of Friendship
Two girls sit on the hood of my car,
Sharing a cigarette dream,
Heads tossed back underneath the stars,
In thanks of a day redeemed.
***
Four crossed legs, two smiles, one chat,
Summer wind down the lane.
"Let's race to the end of love and back,
And see all that's left, what remains."
***
"We'll meet back here," says the girl in red,
"Unless you forget about me.
"I want to laugh about what we said;
"Was life all you hoped it would be?"
***
And the girl in blue, I see her consent,
And she leans back with a deep breath.
This must be what the poets meant,
By enduring a lover's death.
***
Two girls sit on the hood of my car,
Sharing a cigarette dream.
Two girls waiting, waiting for scars,
In the joy of the friendship between.
December Chill
Deep within the woods,
Near a lonely, frozen hill,
I hunkered down one night
From a mean December chill.
***
The howl of a wolf
'Cross the snow-covered way,
Came through the window somehow,
Making me feel even more aloof;
The howl of a wolf did bay.
***
Yet my quilt was heavy,
And the fire strong,
Heavy and strong as the snow;
For any assault did I feel ready,
Whatever that came along.
***
Deep within the woods,
Near a lonely, frozen hill,
I hunkered down one night
From a mean December chill.
The Wind Must Be Female
I love the windy days,
When leaves frolic in the streets,
Though for me the wind never stays,
It always runs away.
***
No matter how fast I go,
With my shoes, my coat, my hat,
It always seems to be too slow.
Away, away, the winds blow.
***
Like any pretty lass,
That I so happen to meet,
Gone is she so very fast,
A premature
