“OK, I’ll get to the point,” said Amy. “I just wanted to thank all of you, the people of Pine Grove, for the hospitality you’ve shown me over the past month or two. It’s been my pleasure to service you with my mobile dog grooming van. And I’ve loved getting to know each and every one of you and your pets. It was particularly nice getting to know Chelsea, Teeny, and Miss May over the past couple weeks. You’re lucky to have them!”
“Here, here,” said Wayne. Applause erupted from the crowd and then died down.
“Sadly, I’m standing on this chair tonight to announce that I’m no longer going to be servicing Pine Grove with my mobile grooming van. Instead, I’m going to be moving back to my hometown with my grandma, Petunia. We’re going to open a dog grooming store that doesn’t have wheels because that seems easier and cheaper on gas. We’re going to live and work together but we’re not going to forget any of you fine people we met in Pine Grove.”
“Speak for yourself,” said Petunia, “I can’t wait to forget them!”
“Not me,” said Ethel, piping up from a nearby table.
“How could I forget you, Ethel? I won so much money from you at the poker table, you’re my favorite person in the history of gambling.”
Again, applause and laughter sounded from the crowd.
“Alright. I’m coming off the chair now,” said Amy. “Thanks again, everyone. Grandma and I are lucky to have spent so much time in Pine Grove.”
“Hopefully the next town doesn’t have so many murders,” said Petunia.
I laughed, along with everyone else in town. Amy and Petunia made a cute pair. Petunia was grumpy and Amy was always so positive, it was fun.
I hoped, deep down, that Petunia was right, and that she and Amy would be moving to a true small town paradise, a place where nothing bad ever happened…
But Amy called us a few months after she moved. Business was good. The dogs were cute in her town. But there had already been a murder.
And, you guessed it. Amy and Petunia were hot on the tail of the killer.
