Janey was confused and her confusion must have shown on her face, because the older woman laughed and used her thumb to wipe the tears that had gathered at the side of her eye.
“Do you know how it feels for a mother to not see son fils, her son, in five years?” She shook her head. “You brought him back to us. I’ve never seen him so at peace with himself. You are good for him.”
Janey was speechless.
She was saved from speaking with the arrival of Drew. He did not come from inside the house but had walked around the house till he found them.
Janey’s attention was arrested as soon as she saw him. Dressed in dark blue jeans and a white button down shirt, he had on his sunglasses. He was the most badass, sexy man she’d ever met and she couldn’t believe that he was hers.
All mine.
The thought snaked into her mind and surprised her. She was pretty much possessive about the gorgeous man walking towards her.
As Drew walked towards them, he had his gaze fixed intently on Janey. The heat in his gaze made her feel breathless. He stopped in front of Janey.
“Hi, Mom,” he said, never taking his eyes off Janey.
Then he leaned down and kissed Janey hard on her mouth, using his tongue to tease.
Janey forgot that his mother was sitting there. Forgot where they were. Everything else faded and all that remained was Drew and how he made her feel.
There was a coughing sound in the background. Drew ended the kiss. His eyes were hooded as he straightened up, but the passion in them made her shiver in reaction.
He turned to his mother with an amused grin, “What now, Mother?”
“Mais, cher! I’m just glad to see you!” she said, laughing as she got to her feet. “I’ll leave you two alone now.” She patted Drew on the cheek and blew a kiss to Janey as she walked leisurely back into the house.
Chapter Twenty-three
Drew watched his mother walk away then shifted his gaze to Janey. Her face was flushed with color, which amused him no end. He sat beside her and then shifted closer so that there was no space between them.
“Missed me?”
She smiled. “You know I did.”
That was another thing he liked about Janey. She did not play games. He found it so refreshing.
“I missed you too. Couldn’t wait to be done and hurry back to you.”
He slanted his body so that he was facing her. Then he touched her hair, feeling the silky softness between his fingers.
She’d left her hair down. It got to her shoulders and went a little way past. Her hair was full and beginning to frizz, thanks to the humidity. He loved how it made her look a little bit wild, and how she did not seem to care or notice.
“I got a call from Rusty. We think your phone might be bugged.”
Janey lifted puzzled eyes to him. “How is that possible? The phone has been with me all this while.”
Drew understood her confusion. He’d felt the same way as well when Rusty had told him.
“Apparently there are apps that can be used to tap into your phone. Once they can connect to your line, through a phone call maybe, then they have access to your GPS, your emails, text messages…everything.”
Janey turned pale. Her shock was written all over her face. “There are apps like these?”
“They are sold online for less than a hundred bucks.”
“Get out!” She looked angry, then the anger drained out and her shoulders slumped in defeat. “So we’re sitting ducks…”
Drew felt anger churn in his gut. There was no way in hell he was going to let anyone get to Janey. They would have to go through him first.
He lifted her and settled her on his lap. He really loved it when she was sitting there. Then he wrapped his arms around her.
“We’re gonna be fine, babe.”
She shook her head then sat up. “I need to destroy that phone!”
“No, baby, we can’t do that.”
That had also been his first response. But he needed this to end and the only way to do that was to go on the offensive. No more playing hide and seek. He was done running.
“What?”
“Listen. We need to figure out who is behind this. I’m sending the phone to HQ by overnight. We can use reverse tracking to lead us right to who is behind this.”
She stared at him, her eyes huge against her face. “I want this to end, Drew. I need it to end!” There was a thin thread of desperation running through her voice.
Drew pulled her to him and held her tightly. She melted into him. They were silent for several moments.
“Drew?”
“Hmm.”
“We can’t stay here. I would never forgive myself if anything happens to your parents.”
“Janey, you are safe here. Have you not noticed the heavy security in here?”
“I wondered about that.”
“My mom was kidnapped once when we were younger. Since then, my dad has been paranoid about security.”
Janey sat up and stared at him, shock written all over her face. “She was just kidnapped like that from the house?”
“Actually, she was out in the garden.”
“Who would do such a terrible thing? Why?”
“Ransom. My family owns chains of hotels and resorts. But they’ve always been simple people at heart. That experience changed everything. Now this house is rigged like a fortress.”
She laid her head back on his chest. After a few moments she spoke.
“Drew, I’m scared.”
He kissed her forehead. He hated that she was scared, or running from people who wanted her dead. It galled him that he could not immediately put an end to everything and keep her safe. But if it was the last thing he did, he was going to get those bastards and make them pay for doing this to Janey.
“Don’t be scared, sweetheart. I’ll make sure you’re safe.”
She moved her face slightly and kissed him on his neck, where his shirt collar was open. Drew closed his eyes at the impact.
“I want a gun.”
Drew was sure he had misheard her. “Say what now?”
She sat up and looked him square in the face when she spoke, “I said I want a gun.”
“For the love of… Why?”
Her eyes narrowed and he saw her chin set into that stubborn angle. “I refuse to be a sitting duck, Drew. If anyone comes at me again, I want a fighting chance.”
He did not know what to say. He hated the thought of her carrying a firearm about, but he had seen her in action and knew that she could hit any moving target. The woman was cool under pressure and she knew how to use a weapon. Damn it.
“You don’t need a firearm, I’m here to protect you,” he said in a terse voice.
She framed his face with her hands, her touch gentle. “I know you can, baby. And I trust you with my life. But I do not want to be a helpless female. That’s not who I am.”
It was the first time Janey was using any kind of endearment for him, and Drew felt himself turn to mush. Shit. The woman was playing him without even trying.
“I don’t like it,” he said, knowing that he would give in.
She brought her lips to his and kissed him. Once. Then a second time. When she tried to pull back, he put pressure on her back and deepened the kiss. She shut her eyes and threw herself into kissing him, holding nothing back.
Drew felt himself growing harder beneath her backside. He ended the kiss and threw his head back against the chair.
“You are in my veins like a drug,” he said.
He could not get enough of her. He wanted nothing better than to take her inside and make hot, sweet love to her all afternoon.
She shifted on his lap, moving her ass over his erection. His breath escaped in a hiss and his hands came up to her side, holding her still.
“You don’t want to do that, honey,” he said.
She held his gaze with hers and moved again. “Why not?”
“Because, if you keep doing that sweetheart, I’m g
oing to lift you in my arms and carry you upstairs. Then I’ll slowly take off your clothes until you are standing before me completely naked. I will kiss you; your mouth, your neck…all over your body. Every inch of you will become intimate with my tongue. I will place you on the bed, spread your legs wide and lick you until you scream my name. Then I’ll lick you some more. And when you think you can’t take it anymore I will plunge my shaft into your soft, gorgeous core and fuck you till you come so hard that you see stars.”
She stared at him, her pupils dilated. He could hear her shallow breathing and knew that she was as turned on as he was. She shifted uncomfortably on him.
“You’re wet,” he said, his voice gravelly.
She nodded. “Drew…”
“Yeah?”
“Take me inside.” Her voice was husky with desire. “Take me inside and do everything you said.”
Her tongue darted out to wet her lips and Drew groaned. He was suddenly desperate to have her. He could not wait to feel her naked body beneath him…above him…beside him…hell, he was okay with any position as long as it ended with him buried inside her.
Drew stood up with her in his arms and gently set her to her feet. She brushed against him as she slid down, eliciting another groan from him. He thought about kissing her there, but knew he was hanging on by a thread.
Instead he threaded his fingers with hers and walked hurriedly into the house. At the foot of the stairs, they heard Drew’s name.
Drew kept moving without pausing. “Not now, Walter,” he threw over his shoulder.
Inside the room, he shut the door behind him and turned the lock. Then he leaned against the door and watched Janey. She ran her hands over her dress, then pressed her thighs together. A look of ecstasy came over her face and a small moan escaped her mouth.
She was so damned sexy.
Drew was so hard he was beginning to hurt. “Come here.”
She hesitated, then threw her head back and walked over to where he was standing.
“You ordered?”
Drew let out a short laugh. “Don’t be a smart ass. Now kiss me.”
She flashed him a sassy smile, before reaching out to grasp the front of his shirt. She pulled him down till their lips met. Then she closed her eyes and kissed him, running her tongue over his lips. Her tongue darted into his mouth then retreated as her lips clung to his.
The way she kissed him, like he belonged to her, made him so hard he broke the kiss.
“Enough,” he said, breathing hard.
She laughed and let go of his shirt, only to bring her hands down to his arousal. She ran her hands over it, stopping to gently squeeze the tip.
“Shit.” Drew knew he was finished. She was hell bent on decimating his control.
“Calm down, lover,” she said, moving her hands from his erection.
Drew looked at her and felt his heart swell. He loved this bold, sexy version of Janey. He loved the other version too. Hell, he loved every part of her, even her damn stubbornness. But this confident side to her was sexy as hell.
He felt his belt come loose. Then she undid the button of his jeans. She bent down and cupped his ass, pressing her breasts against his arousal. He cock jerked.
Janey pulled down his jeans until they were down to his ankles. She pulled down his boxers and his erection sprung free. She stared at it and licked her lips.
Drew watched her in fascination. Was she going to… before he could finish the thought, she held his shaft and ran her hand over, from the hilt to the tip. She trapped some moisture at the tip and spread it over the head with her thumb.
Drew gritted his teeth as different sensations coursed through him. Her eyes met his and she held his gaze as she went down on her knees. She opened her mouth and he groaned as he felt her hot breath on his erection. Then she moved further down and kissed his thigh, letting out a soft moan in the process.
His hands settled on her head lightly. He wanted to move her mouth to where he needed to feel her, but he didn’t. What she was doing was so erotic. He was so turned on that he was tempted to pick her up and move to the bed. But this was sweet torture.
He met her eyes and saw that she was as turned on as he was. She moved her arms around him to cup his ass once more, then brought her face against his dick.
“God, baby, what are you doing to me?” Drew could hardly recognize his voice.
“Killing you softly,” she said, shifting her head slightly so that her mouth was touching his penis. She ran her tongue over it, then brought her hand forward and held on to the erect shaft. She pulled one hand down and then ran the other in a circular motion before opening her mouth and lowering it onto his shaft.
“Ah, shit, hell, damn!”
The feeling of her mouth closing around him was like nothing Drew had ever felt before. She ran her mouth lightly over his shaft, lubricating him in the process. Then she shut her eyes and started moving her mouth from his shaft to his tip.
The sounds she made were electrifying. She moaned softly, clearly becoming aroused from what she was doing.
Drew shut his eyes and became lost in the moment.
Chapter Twenty-four
Later that afternoon, Drew got up and got dressed. Janey opened her eyes and yawned. She ached in places she did not know she could ache.
“Going somewhere?” she asked, her voice still sleepy.
“You nap a bit, baby. I’ll just hurry to town and send your phone to HQ,” he said, bending to drop a kiss on her mouth.
She watched him get ready to leave, her heart heavy.
“I’ll miss you,” she said sadly.
Drew flashed her a smile. “I know, babe. But I’ll be back before you know it.”
He gave her another kiss and was gone.
Janey waited until she heard the car drive out. She gave it half an hour, just to be sure. But she could not wait much longer.
After she was sure he’d left, she got up and dressed then went downstairs in search of Walter. She found him in the kitchen.
He stood up and came towards her as soon as he saw her.
“Do you need something, Miss Janey?”
She frowned at him. “Just Janey. And yes, could you please call me a taxi?”
“Mister Drew will be back any moment now, yes? I’m sure he won’t mind taking you wherever you wish to go.”
Janey shook her head. “I’m sorry, but I can’t wait for him.”
“I really think you should wait for him,” he said carefully.
“I’m sorry, but that’s not an option.”
“Okay then, let me get you one of Mr. Carron’s cars, no? I can drive you myself.”
Janey’s eyes widened in horror. “Oh no, no, sir. I really don’t want to put anyone out.”
More than that, she did not want Drew knowing where she was going. Not that she knew where she was going. She just knew that she could not remain in that house. She did not care what Drew said, but whoever was after her life seemed like a ruthless person. She did not want to put these nice people in any form of danger.
She knew that if she mentioned her plans to Drew, he would get upset and would not let her out of his sight. Her heart ached at the thought of leaving Drew. He had finally agreed to give her a firearm, which was now resting inside her purse.
She needed to get going before he returned. She touched the older man’s sleeves.
“Please, Mister. Walter. Just help me call a taxi and if that’s not possible, then point me to the bus stop.”
He looked horrified at the mention of the bus stop.
“No, no, miss. You can’t take the bus. Besides, there is no bus stop anywhere close by.”
“It doesn’t matter whether you help me or not. I will just march outside the gate and keep walking till I find a bus stop,” she said, placing a hand on her waist.
Walter shook his head in disgust. “How can someone so gentle be très stubborn?”
“I’m a southern woman, it’s in our DNA,” she said, f
lashing him a smile.
His face spread into a smile as well. “Ay yay yay, does Mister Drew know what he’s getting into?”
“He’ll figure it out in time,” she said, giving him a wink.
Walter shook his head again. “I’m going to regret this,” he muttered to himself as he picked up the phone in the kitchen and called for a taxi.
Janey thanked him sincerely before going back up the stairs.
In the room, she packed a few essentials, only stuff that could fit into her purse. She knew that she would not be able to pass airport security with the firearm. Her best bet would be to rent a car and drive.
Drive to where?
She had no idea where she was going. She knew that she could not head back to Broken Arrow, it was too dangerous for her family. She could go to Sierra in Chicago, but she would not put her friend in danger that way.
She did not know where she would go or how long she would last before those searching for her eventually caught up with her. But she did know that she could no longer stay and endanger Drew’s parents.
She thought about the text message she’d received earlier and shuddered. She probably should have deleted it before giving the phone to Drew, but she hoped that when the phone got to Rusty, they would be able to figure out who had sent it.
She picked up her purse and coat, then walked to the door. At the door, she turned back and gazed at the bed. If she closed her eyes, she could feel his touch. Hear the words he’d whispered against her heated skin.
She felt her skin break out in goose bumps. Drew had loved her thoroughly on that bed. She’d felt completely ravished. She brought a hand to her face, it was hot.
She wished with everything in her that there was another way. An alternative. But there wasn’t. Because she loved Drew so much, and had come to really like his parents, she needed to leave.
She had no choice.
She took a deep breath to gather her strength. Then she blinked away the tears that had gathered in her eyes.
I can do this.
She could do it too. She was strong and determined. And she was not going to die. Hell no. She had no idea why someone would be after her life, but she was not going to give them the satisfaction of killing her.
