”God, I missed you so much,” he purred into her ear, his voice low and rough with need. “Tell me all your injuries are healed so I can have my way with you—”

”You might have to check,” she said archly, raising an eyebrow—and he grinned in response, lifting her effortlessly into his powerful arms and carrying her straight into his bedroom. Gone was the passionate, incoherent intensity of the last time they made love—this time, Lachlan seemed to know exactly what he was doing, and she felt a shiver run down her spine at the intensity in his eyes. He deposited her effortlessly on the bed, his hands already moving to pull her shirt off over her head—and she shivered as his fingertips glided down the length of her bare arms, exploring them with a deft, almost impersonal touch. Only the gleam of amusement in his eyes let her know that this was a game they were playing—a game she was determined to win.

”No sign of any injuries here,” he said softly, and she felt his breath against her skin as he pressed her onto her back onto the bed. She shivered impatiently as his hands moved down, pulling at the waistband of the pants she was wearing, caressing her bare stomach and glancing over her breasts, still trapped in her bra. But she lay back, obedient and docile, a wicked smirk playing around her lips as he pulled her pants free of her body and began to perform his mock inspection of her long, slender legs.

Serena’s breathing began to hitch as he got further and further up her leg, tracing little idle patterns on her inner thigh under the pretense of searching for any lingering injuries. She knew as well as he did that she was fully healed—and she shivered, a little whimper of need escaping her as his fingertips ghosted past her panties. Annoyance that she’d lost the game quickly gave way to delight as he ripped her panties away from her body and she felt the sensation of his breath against her sex, her body aching for his touch… and then, agonizingly slow, she felt the tip of his tongue part her folds and brush ever so softly against the swelling bud of her clitoris.

She clenched her fists in the sheets on either side of her hips, trying to stop herself from seizing his head and forcing him in deeper—and he seemed to sense her impatience. That laugh she loved so much rumbled out from his chest, and the vibrations against her most intimate place felt so good she gasped for breath, bucking her hips up against his face. He continued to tease her, exploring her body ever so slowly with his lips and tongue, pressing on the sensitive places he found, driving her closer and closer to the edge but never quite giving her as much stimulation as she wanted. Her whole body was tingling with desire, lightning shooting up and down her spine, her nipples hard and pointed at the sky, her breath catching on her kiss-roughened lips—and when he finally kissed his way up her body from her sex to her breast to her throat, all she could do was throw her arms around him like a drowning woman and buck her hips demandingly up against his body.

But he wasn’t done yet. He pressed kiss after kiss to her throat, his hand moving down to caress her hips, to ease around her sex and part her folds again. The hand, at least, was a little more forceful than his tongue—she whimpered as he pressed his fingers inside her, exploring her body as he kissed her throat, her face, and finally her lips. She could taste herself on his lips, the sweet tang of her own excitement, and she groaned aloud into his mouth, completely abandoning herself to the pleasure of his body against hers.

But he wasn’t the only one with hands. Surreptitiously, she caressed him, her fingertips creeping down his powerful chest, across the rippling muscles of his abdomen, lower and lower to where his manhood stood, already hard and waiting for her. She curled her fingers around him and was rewarded with a groan—grinning to herself, she stroked him a few times, pleased by how readily he responded to her touch. She squeezed more firmly as she grew bolder with his body, and before long he was groaning in her ear, his movements getting more and more erratic as he began to lose that icy-calm composure with which he’d carried her into the bedroom…

Finally, she felt him give in—and that was when she struck. In one quick movement, she reversed their positions, so he was spread out under her, with her straddling his hips, breathing hard. At some point, her hair had come loose from its usual braid, and it was falling across her face and dancing across his body. He smiled up at her, reaching up with surprising softness to push a lock of hair out of her face. Suddenly shy, she ducked her head, blushing.

”You’re beautiful,” he said softly, not looking away. And because she couldn’t think of anything else to say, she leaned down and claimed his mouth in a kiss, hoping to say with her body what she couldn’t think to express in words.

And finally, she reached down and slid his cock to the hilt inside her, her eyes fluttering shut at the intensity of the sensation. He was groaning, too, his hands gripping her hips tightly as they explored this new angle together. It was like they were made for each other—every tiny shift of her hips sent new sensations rocketing through her body, and the more she moved, the more she could feel his breathing picking up. It wasn’t long before their pace was frantic, both of them lost in each other, Lachlan thrusting his hips up to meet her as she ground her hips against him. There was no holding back from her orgasm, trying politely to time it—only the wordless, ancient conversation between their bodies and the inevitable climax they were both hurtling towards. In the end, they crashed over the edge together, muffling their cries with a passionate kiss.

She fell asleep in his arms again—and this time, no lingering worries disturbed either of their dreams.

  Chapter 19 – Lachlan

  “Doggie!”

Delilah was toddling at top speed down the beach, a manic gleam in her eye as she accelerated. Her quarry quailed before her—an enormous wolf, its red-brown pelt dripping with seawater. The toddler, supremely unafraid of the wolf—which had to be at least ten times her size—got within a few paces before the wolf took off again, tearing straight into the water and splashing the laughing toddler with ocean water.

”I don’t think Serena likes being called ‘doggie’, Delilah,” Lachlan laughed. He was sitting on the beach a little above the high water mark, trying to do a bit of sunbathing… but with Delilah and Serena around, there was no such thing as a peaceful afternoon at the beach. If his daughter wasn’t flinging sand around like she was at war with the sea itself, then his mate was digging holes or hurling herself into the ocean… and that was just in her wolf form. Human-shaped, she somehow managed to get up to even more mischief. And to think she was the one who was always telling him to relax.

It was the third week of his official holiday—and Lachlan had to admit, he was beginning to get used to taking it easy. With the problem wolf pack finally being banished for good, there was no need for patrols—and Bryce had insisted that they had the construction issue well underway. Not only were they ahead of schedule for getting the tourist cottages built before the next season, but Bryce had even managed to set aside enough time to get the town square paved. He was looking forward to seeing it later—he and Serena had been banished from the square since the work had begun, with the guys insisting on presenting it as a kind of gift in honor of their new partnership.

Because it was pretty clear to everyone that Lachlan and Serena were meant to be together. They’d had a few long conversations in the days following the battle with the wolf pack. They’d agreed that they’d take it slow—but then Serena had looked up at him, a guarded look in her eye.

”Can I ask you about a shifter thing?”

  ”Of course.”

”My mom used to say that—well, she said that shifters have a kind of… predestined… soulmate, out there. Someone you’re meant to be with. Someone you just meet one day, and… that’s it.”

His heart was drumming in his chest. A part of him had thought of nothing else since he’d met her… but it wasn’t exactly the kind of thing you just brought up with your daughter’s nanny. Hi, good to meet you, and by the way, do you believe in soulmates? “Yeah. That’s… that’s what they say.” He took a dee
p breath. “Some shifters don’t believe in it.”

She looked at him, her silver eyes shining in the light. “Do you?”

”I do,” he said simply. And then, with all the courage he had in him: “At least, I have since I met you.”

“Me too,” she whispered. “God, I—I couldn’t believe it. I thought there was something wrong with me. The way I felt when I met you—I wanted to tell you straight away. But you were my boss, and there was Delilah to think of… where does she factor in, in all this?”

”I don’t know.” He’d shrugged. “But she adores you, Serena. And so do I. What else do we need to know?”

It had been the best few weeks of his life. They fitted so well together—they settled into a comfortable routine, taking care of Delilah, looking after the house, wandering the settlement together hand in hand as they kept an eye on the toddler. Delilah, for her part, was thriving. She’d barely noticed Serena’s brief absence, and ever since she’d had them both taking care of her full-time, she’d somehow become even more energetic and rambunctious. It felt like she was growing every day—getting taller, stronger, faster, learning more words, exploring the world with more certainty. Lachlan couldn’t wait to wake up every day to watch her grow—and to have Serena at his side, watching her with him.

The wolf came padding out of the water—and in a heartbeat, there stood Serena, laughing as she squeezed seawater out of her hair. Delilah clapped her hands delightedly—watching her shifter caretakers change form was one of her favorite things. Serena joined him on his towel, grinning as Delilah set about digging a deep hole in the sand with her characteristic single-mindedness.

”How do you think she’d feel about a sibling?” she asked casually—and he turned to her, his eyes widening as he framed the question. She laughed. “Oh, god—no, no, I don’t have any news. But, you know.” She shrugged, a smile playing around her lips. “I’ve been thinking about it. Too soon?”

”Definitely not,” he promised her, beaming. “I don’t know, though. Two of them?”

”To start.” Serena shrugged. He stared at her. “What? I’m a professional at taking care of children, I could handle it.”

”Speak for yourself,” he said faintly. But he had to admit… the idea of a big family was kind of wonderful. Especially if it was a family he shared with Serena. “I’ll have to add more rooms to the cottage.”

”More construction work,” she teased him, grinning.

”Oh, heck. Speaking of. We better get to the town square.”

Delilah didn’t particularly want to leave her grand project—the world’s deepest hole—but they eventually won the argument and headed back towards town. It was getting towards sunset, and their shadows were long on the ground in front of them—two figures, holding hands, with a third toddling determinedly along in front of them. When they reached the town square, Lachlan could hardly believe his eyes. Where before there’d been tamped-down dirt, now there was smooth granite tile in a neat square—a set of benches for people to sit and talk at, and a kind of raised platform that could function as a stage for announcements, ceremonies, and celebrations.

And it was on the stage that his friends were gathered—all five of the guys, wearing identical grins. Lachlan raised an eyebrow, heading up to the stage with Serena in tow.

”It looks amazing,” Lachlan said honestly, looking around. “This is… so great.”

”I can’t believe how good it looks,” Serena was gushing, staring around the space with a huge smile on her face. “We can have parties! And celebrations! And events! Those tables would be perfect for food, we could have music and dancing in the square…”

”Funny you should say that,” Lachlan said, his lip twitching. Daniel was hiding a grin behind his hand, and even James was fighting to keep his composure. Serena looked up at them, a sudden look of suspicion on her face.

  ”Say what? What’s going on?”

”You know how we talked about having a party to announce to everyone that we’re soulmates?” Serena’s eyes were the size of saucers as she nodded—and Lachlan grinned broadly as he took her hands in his. “How about tonight?”

“We’ve got everything organized,” Emerson said brightly. “Food, drinks, music, decorations… Harvey picked the flowers out himself, James sorted out the guest list… it’s all organized. Nothing to do but turn up.”

Serena was staring at Lachlan like he’d grown a second head. “Like—a wedding? You’ve thrown me a surprise wedding?”

He hesitated. “Shifters don’t really do weddings. But—yes?” He bit his lip, anxiety suddenly flaring in his stomach. Had surprising her like this been a terrible idea? But that train of thought was abruptly derailed by a solid impact to his chest—Serena had thrown herself into his arms and was kissing him passionately, a broad grin on her face.

”I can’t believe you did this,” she kept saying, and he laughed, holding her close. “I have to go home. I have to get changed! I can’t believe this!”

The guys headed off—still plenty to organize before the event itself—and Lachlan and Serena were left by themselves, standing on the stage and looking out across the new town square. The sun was low in the sky, and her eyes shone so beautifully in the orange light of sunset that he couldn’t help but stare at her. She blinked up at him, a smile dancing around her lips.

  ”What are you thinking about?”

”How lucky I am,” he said simply, reaching down to touch her cheek. “How much I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life loving you.”

”I love you too, Lachlan,” she said softly, smiling up at him. He knew that the ceremony later would be a lot of fun—he was looking forward to declaring his love for her in front of the whole settlement, the people who were closest to him. But right now, with the sun setting and the love of his life gazing into his eyes, he was glad they could share this private moment, just the two of them.

  ”Daddy! S’rena!”

  Well, the three of them.
