Summer sunshine blazed onto her face as she left the building where Karen’s office was situated on the third floor. Pedestrians; men, women and children, walked to and fro on the street outside all squinting from the brightness with some wearing sunglasses, but not Grace. She welcomed the brightness of day and had come to appreciate even the gloomiest of weather since she had been free. Trivial items most people never thought twice about triggered a sense of gratitude and she delighted in hearing the sound of her own footsteps as they connected with the pavement, interrupted only by the sound of her phone ringing.
“DI Dalton,” she answered.
“It’s me, Phil. There’s been another one.”
