Dead Suited

Doherty agreed with her. ‘As far as he was concerned, the display depicted his idol who he’d seen at a pop concert years ago.’
‘What do we do about the watch?’
Doherty took another sip of his wine.
‘I’m thinking that Mr Mahon will claim it back once he hears a suspect has been charged. Unless he’s got so many he doesn’t really care. In which case we’ll let Charlie know when it comes up for auction. Lost property have them at least twice a year – mostly bicycles, but a few watches.’
Honey pointed out that he’d never be able to afford it.
Docherty grinned. She guessed what was coming.
‘It’s not a real Bulgari, is it? Just one of the cheap imports you can pick up for pennies at any Sunday market stall. That’s how it will get listed anyway.’
‘If Mahon doesn’t demand its return.’
‘I don’t think he will. Bear in mind he owns a nightclub with a very dubious reputation. He wouldn’t want the police taking too close a look at it I’m sure.’
Honey conceded that he had a point. She rolled the wine around her tongue, eyes narrowed.
‘I still find it hard to visualise Nigel Tern impersonating Adam Ant. I know there are a whole army of Elvis Presley impersonators. I didn’t know there were a whole load of overweight baldies out there thinking they looked good in tight britches and face makeup.’
‘You’ve really got a thing about tight britches, haven’t you?’
Reluctantly Honey dragged herself away from the vivid thoughts in her head. Doherty had a glint in his eyes.
‘What?’
His smile was wicked. His fingers curved around her neck, pulling her closer so he could whisper in her ear.
‘I know where I can get a pair.’
‘Wow!’
‘I promise I’ll wear them, but on one condition.’
‘Say it. It’s yours.’
‘The condition is that you wear that corset you were wearing when you threw yourself across Arnold Tern’s lap.’
‘How do you know it’ll turn you on,’ she whispered, her tongue darting into his ear.
‘I know. I saw the look on the old man’s face. Hope springs eternal. I want some of that!’
