And not just in passing like he did when he worked at the hospital, or during his time at nursing school.

So, Riley would bet it was just a concentrated dose of Grayson’s pheromones, triggering Riley’s hormones. Or something more sciencey like that. It certainly wasn’t magic, or fate, because if it was, Riley had to believe Grayson was his fated, and well, that wasn’t possible... Was it?

  “Since…?” Grayson prompted.

Riley wasn’t sure how to answer the question. Thankfully, the doorbell ringing halted his scrambling thoughts, searching for a reason. You mean searching for a lie.

Riley was starting to hate his conscience. Seriously, his lie wasn’t hurting anyone and things were going well, but the pesky voice wouldn’t let up.

Grayson stepped away from Riley, “Hold that thought. That must be Nickolas here for Max.”

“Already? That was fast,” Riley said, worrying his lips, “I need to go pack him a bag.”

“Wait a moment. I’d like you to meet Nic,” Grayson said, “he’s one of my oldest friends, and I trust him with my life.”

Riley nodded. Of course, he would love to meet a friend of Grayson’s. He took it as a good sign that the man even wanted to introduce him. James had never once introduced Riley to anyone. If Riley was being honest, there were several warning signs he had ignored when it came to James, but he had already been over that way too many times in his life. He wasn’t going to start again.

The only good thing for him was that now, he knew what to look for. Although, it seemed he didn’t have to be on the lookout, because Grayson seemed to be the perfect alpha gentleman.

“Come on,” Grayson said to Riley, then to Max he said, “Uncle Nickolas is here to pick you up for a sleepover, buddy.”

“Uncle Nic,” Max cried, happily pushing his chair back and running towards the door. Riley had put Max in the new table area he had set up specifically for him, so Max didn’t have to sit at the island in the high seats and give Riley a heart attack whenever he fidgeted.

“You’ll love Nic, and Jai—that’s his omega,” Grayson said.

They made their way to the front door hand in hand, to find an impatient Max waiting for them.

“Uncle Nic id here. Uncle Nic id here,” Max chanted. Riley smiled at Max’s pronunciation of is.

“Yes he is, and getting impatient it seems,” Grayson laughed, as the doorbell was pressed repeatedly with barely a pause in between.

Grayson opened the door to a tall good looking man with dark hair, which screamed alpha. Wow. The man dripped it from his pores. In one arm he had a baby carrier with a beautiful chubby redheaded child, and his other arm was around the waist of a much smaller man, closer to Riley’s height, with the most gorgeous red hair that Riley had ever seen. He was holding another baby, this one dark haired.

Riley had always loved red hair. He knew it was weird to some people since he had almost white blond hair, that most people spent a lot of money to achieve and still couldn’t. But there was something about auburn hair that had always felt magical to Riley.

“I should leave you standing out there, for making a nuisance of yourself with my doorbell,” Grayson snapped––although Riley could see there was no heat to it––at the man he assumed was Nickolas, “But you have my godsons with you, so you’re forgiven.”

Grayson finally released Riley’s hand, but it was to grab the baby carrier from the alpha.

“Come here precious boy, it’s your uncle Gray. You’re happy to see your uncle Gray aren’t you…aren’t you,” Riley stood stunned to hear Grayson speak baby talk.

Nickolas must have caught the look on his face, “That’s Gray for you. Loves babies. Wants as many as possible,” Nickolas said. He gave Riley a look, but Riley wasn’t exactly sure what it was supposed to mean.

“Why don’t you introduce us, before dropping vague hints,” the petit redhead said, “Honestly, alphas.” He finished, giving Riley a conspiratorial wink, making him smile.

“Please come in, come in,” Riley said, stepping back when he realized they were still at the door having this conversation.

Nickolas walked in and immediately scooped Max up in his now free arms, since Gray had taken the baby carrier from him. The alpha walked towards the living room that Grayson had disappeared into, without saying another word to Riley.

“I’m Jai, and please excuse Nickolas. He’s very protective of Grayson and Max,” the omega said.

Jai secured the chubby baby in his arms on his left side, freeing up his right hand for a handshake, which Riley met.

“Riley, nice to meet you. And it’s fine,” Riley murmured.

Riley eyed the chubby baby with longing. He hadn’t held one in a while. He had even done a little time in the pediatric ward during his rotations, because holding another child had hurt his heart.

Jai must have seen the longing in his eyes, because he asked, “Wanna hold Nix?” Jai asked.

  Riley nodded excitedly, “Please.”

Riley stretched his arms out for the precious bundle.

“You’re a big boy aren’t you,” Riley cooed at the baby in his arms, and walked towards the living room with Jai following.

“You look good with him. Who knows, maybe you’ll have one of your own in the next ten months,” Jai said. And Riley froze.

Fuck. He was going into heat, and he and Grayson were going to have heat sex. They hadn’t spoken about it, but he could be pregnant as soon as––well the next day.

Riley had thought about having a baby with Grayson. Hell he’d just had the thought. He’d also thought about the fact that heat meant he could fall pregnant, but somehow, his brain had failed to put all those together.

“Didn’t think about that, did you?” Jai said. The other omega was giggling at the, Riley would bet, stunned look on his face.

Riley started moving again and walked into the room with the alphas, his eyes landing on Grayson, and it occurred to him, he could be pregnant with the alpha's child in the next twenty-four hours, and he wasn’t scared. In fact, he was giddy at the thought.

  Grayson

Nic had read him correctly when he walked into the room, with Max in his arms and the omegas nowhere in sight.

“Guess you don’t want us to stay much longer,” Nic teased.

“You have a little time,” Gray replied.

“Mmm… don’t worry, we’ll be out of your way soon. Jai just wanted to meet Riley. He’s planning to set up a playdate, although I think it’s more for him than it is for the twins.”

“They’ll get along,” Grayson said, “Same could not have been said for Jai and Dakota.

  Nic snorted, “That’s a fact.”

“But I think Riley and Jai could be friends.”

“I sure hope so,” Nic replied.

Grayson was right. Riley and Jai were getting along, as they walked in with Phoenix, Nic and Jai’s younger son in Riley’s arms, Jai laughing, and Riley looking a little shell-shocked but happy.

Seeing Riley holding one of Nic’s twins, had Grayson imaging Riley holding a little one of their own. From the way Riley was with Max, Grayson was already sure he would be a great dad. He was also certain that Riley would love Max like he was his own, regardless of whatever children came along.

Grayson wasn’t sure why he was certain of it, but he was. From the moment those two met it had been love on both sides. Gray had witnessed it.

You know if there was any doubt in your mind Riley couldn’t accept Max, you would never have even pursued anything, to begin with.

  That was a fact.

Now seeing Riley with a baby had him wanting to get Riley pregnant as soon as possible.

They hadn’t spoken about whether or not Grayson would knot Riley with or without a condom. That was a conversation that needed to be had before Riley’s heat was at its peak and he was incoherent. Right now it was still faint enough that only an alpha who got close enough could scent it him.

&nb
sp; And that wasn’t going to happen.

The only alpha that was getting close enough to scent his omega was him.

Even his best friend Nic knew not to get to close to Riley. Although, Nic was a mated alpha, so Grayson didn’t feel threatened with him in the same room as his omega.

Nic and Jai didn’t linger. Riley had disappeared up to Max’s room with Jai in tow, to pack a bag of things Riley thought Max would need for at least five nights away.

Neither Jai nor Riley had been sure how long his heat would last, so they had figured better safe than sorry. They’d come down with a bag full of clothes and one of toys, that Riley thought Max would need.

Max had stayed over with Nickolas and Jai before, so his son was happy enough to go with them again. Plus, it seemed Max was taken with the twins.

Before Max had left, he’d stopped in front of Riley and Riley had gone on his knees in front of Max, when it looked like Max had a question for him.

Max looked at Riley for a long moment, his blue eyes big and bright, before saying, “You, here when I come back?”

The moment was so perfect, Grayson, Jai and Nic had all sighed.

“I’ll always be here when you come back,” Riley replied to Max.

And that was a promise Gray would make sure Riley was able to keep.

Then, it was just the two of them.

  * * *

Grayson had to stop himself from picking Riley up and carrying him over his shoulder to his room like a caveman.

But they had some things to talk about before that happened.

Riley walked back to the living room where they had entertained Nic and Jai, and began straightening the room. Gray just stood at the door and watched. He figured that Riley needed a moment to get himself together.

Riley seemed to be done straightening, but the omega looked unsure of how to proceed and kept glancing at Grayson, in what Grayson imagined was supposed to be subtle, but was actually far from it.

Grayson stretched out his arms, “Come here.”

It warmed his heart when Riley didn’t hesitate, but walked straight into Grayson’s outstretched arms.

  “Feel better?” Grayson asked.

Riley nodded and leaned back to meet Grayson’s gaze.

“Yeah,” Riley replied in a soft voice.

  “Good.”

  Riley

Riley hadn’t been sure what to do with himself once their guests had left, and there was no Max to use as a buffer. He’d considered disappearing into his room, but decided against it. He was going to sit on the sidelines and let things happen to him. Which meant he couldn’t wait for Grayson to come find him, but the idea of actually instigating things had Riley in a mini panic. And that was how he had ended up rearranging pillows that definitely didn’t need to be rearranged.

Riley felt Grayson the moment he had walked in behind him. It was like his body was becoming more attuned to the alpha’s presence. He’d glanced at Grayson beneath his lashes as he moved around the room, and the alpha’s eyes never left Riley, even when their eyes met.

When he’d stood straight after he’d made his way around the room, Grayson had simply opened his arms wide for him, and Riley hadn’t even debated, he stepped into the alpha’s open arms. It was like coming home.

Riley felt safe in Grayson’s arms, like he’d found his shelter in the storm.

Somehow he knew without needing to be told, that Grayson was the kind of man who was worth putting his trust in. Riley only had James to use as a comparison, but it was enough.

“You know nothing will happen that you don’t want to, right?” Grayson said.

Riley didn’t even have to think about his reply. He knew that there were alphas willing to take advantage of an omega while in heat, but Riley knew that Grayson was not one of them.

He had a feeling that if he told Grayson no, that he didn’t want to spend this heat with him, the alpha would leave Riley alone, but Riley didn’t want that, and it wasn’t the heat talking, not yet.

He knew Grayson would never hurt him physically, and Riley had to take a leap of faith and believe the same could be said for his heart.

“I know. But I do want something to happen,” Riley said, his gaze never leaving Grayson’s, so the alpha could see and hear exactly what he was saying.

Grayson sighed, and Riley could swear his body sagged, relieved. He then went on to press his nose to Riley’s neck, at his pulse point, and Riley could feel the alpha breathe him in.

“You smell so fucking good. So sweet,” Gray groaned into his neck, “but let’s talk first before we go any further.”

Riley could feel just how his scent had affected Grayson. The not so little package poking him was indication enough. But still, the alpha took a step back, then took Riley hand in his and led him towards the kitchen.

“We eat while we talk. You’re going to need all the energy you can get,” Grayson announced, and Riley blushed to the roots of his hair, just thinking about how he would be expending said energy.

In the kitchen, Grayson showed Riley to the chair at the island, the same one he would have put Max in, and he told Riley to sit.

The alpha then moved confidently to the fridge and started pulling out containers, placing them on the island. Grayson then went to the bread bin and got out a fresh baguette. He picked up all the ingredients and brought them to the opposite side of the island from Riley.

Riley considered offering to put the sandwiches together for them, but it felt like Grayson was building up to something, and the food felt like another way he was taking care of Riley, so Riley sat quietly and watched as the alpha laid everything out and started assembling the sandwiches, then Grayson began speaking.

“I know this is probably happening faster than expected,” Grayson said. He glanced up and met Riley’s gaze, “especially since it looks like you weren’t expecting your heat.”

Riley wasn’t sure how to reply, so he just shook his head.

“Want to tell me why an omega as young as you would be surprised to get his heat?” Grayson asked. Then it looked like a thought occurred to him, “It’s not your first one is it?” His tone one of surprise… consternation? Riley wasn’t sure.

“No, no. No, it’s not,” Riley replied immediately.

“Not that there would be anything wrong with that,” Grayson quickly added.

“It’s not my first heat,” Riley replied, “but it will be my first with an alpha,” he whispered. He decided to put that out there.

  “Oh. oh,” Grayson said.

Riley wasn’t sure what Grayson was feeling until a huge smile spread across the alpha’s face.

“I shouldn’t be so pleased about that fact, but I find that I am,” the alpha replied.

Riley blushed. What was he supposed to say, “you’re welcome?”, “Thank you?”

“I think we should talk about babies,” Grayson announced.

Riley’s mouth opened, and all that came out was, “Oh,” which came out sounding more like a high pitched squeak.

Grayson dropped the knife in his hand. He picked up a dishcloth and wiped his hand, then came around to where Riley was sitting and took the seat beside him. He turned the bar stool so he was facing Riley. When Riley didn’t turn his, so they were facing each other, Grayson gently spun Riley’s so they were.

“I shouldn’t have blurted that out,” Grayson started.

Riley considered letting the alpha speak, but decided if Grayson could broach the subject so openly, so he could Riley.

“No, it’s fine,” Riley said, “heat, pregnancy, they practically go hand in hand.”

Gray took Riley’s hand in his, stopping the nervous fidgeting he hadn’t even been aware he was doing.

“Yea, but I could have brought it up differently, especially since it’s your first time, and it will be your first baby if it happens. I never even asked if you wanted babies. I just figured since… well, you’re so good with Max.”

  Ril
ey froze. His mind screamed tell him, tell him now, but no matter how loud it screamed, no sound came out. Nothing.

Grayson must have read his demeanor as fear or something. He wasn’t sure, because the alpha used his finger to gently lift Riley’s face to meet his, “Hey, you don’t have to decide now. As long as I know we are on the same page.”

Riley nodded, but still, no sound came out.

“Okay, so you want to have kids, right?” Grayson asked.

  Riley nodded.

“But not this heat?” Grayson asked again.

Riley started nodding, but stopped, thinking over the question. He started nodding again, but then decided to use his words, “This heat works for me.”

“You know, you don’t have to, right? Not immediately. We can wait. Max is still young and you’re not just a womb to me,” Grayson said earnestly.

Riley searched the alpha's face, and saw he was telling the truth. Riley didn’t realize that he had been worried about Grayson seeing him as just a replacement for Dakota, until that moment.

Dakota hadn’t wanted children, Grayson did, and from everything Grayson had said, it had been a huge issue.

Riley hadn’t know there was a part of him wondering if he was just a convenient womb to Grayson. One of those, if the desirable was unavailable, the available became desirable situations.

Grayson must have taken his silence for something else, “We’ll wait. Get to know each other better. I care about you, Riley—a lot. More than you know.”

Riley nodded decisively, not that he hadn’t decided he wanted to have Grayson’s baby, before they even had this conversation, “Let’s do it.”

Riley realized that he was being vague, since the last thing Grayson said was they should wait. So he clarified.

  “Let’s have a baby.”

The huge smile on the alpha’s face, and the way he picked Riley up like he was made of spun glass, had Riley heart beating faster. Yup, when it came to Grayson Montgomery-Carmichael, Riley was a goner.
