Emma rolled her eyes. “Can’t you just enjoy this evening? You’ve already accomplished so much. The show will be great thanks to Grayson, the dining room looks incredible, and now you have a kitchen that functions the way it’s supposed to.”
“I can’t relax,” Layla said. “There is still so much to do before we open in the winter. If we’re going to be a success—”
“Not if…when,” Emma corrected. “We’ll make The Paradise a success together. I’m glad now that I came back and that we reconnected.”
“Me too.” Layla’s smile fell a little. “I only wish…”
Emma clucked her tongue. “Callie.”
She pictured the third member of their little troop. What must their friend be going through right now? Her husband was embroiled in a huge legal scandal. The empire he’d built was crumbling to the ground, taking Callie down with it.
“We can only hope she’ll survive,” Layla said. “I wish we could see her again, just to make sure she’s all right.”
Emma looked up at the Tragedy/Comedy masks hanging above the stage. The lights were hitting the hollow eyes in a way that the masks almost seemed to be winking at them. Like they were privy to the secrets of the universe.
“Who knows?” Emma said. “Maybe your enchanted theatre will somehow find a way to bring our Callie home, too.”
