And as our lips connect, the crowd cheers and David yells out, “Who wants to grab a lover’s deal? Double burger with brisket romance? Get them while I’ve got brisket!”
From somewhere behind us, in the direction of the benches and tables, I can hear Dion’s voice calling above the crowd. “You give me hope in happy endings.”
Maybe the wrong text finally got a right reply. I can’t wait to see where we go next.
Chapter 42
Knox
I hold my glass by my lips but stare out the back window as Blaze works in his yard with his shirt off. I’m not amused as I glance over my shoulder toward Savvy. “Hey, what’s going on here? You can see him shirtless from your house? I thought you couldn’t see over the fence?” I’m illogically jealous and I know this, but I can’t help it.
I don’t want competition. Not when I still feel like our relationship is still so new. Almost too new.
“Blaze? Nope. Not my type.” Savvy smirks and shakes her head.
My mouth falls open. “How is he not your type? He’s exactly like me.” And he is. Blaze is so much like me; I remember being told we could be brothers.
Savvy sashays up to me, the bright blue of her shirt not holding a candle to the brilliant blue of her eyes. She leans in close, wrapping her fingers behind my neck. “You have nothing to be jealous about. You’re my type. No one else is. I love you. Don’t forget it.”
I sigh because she’s right. No matter how insecure I feel about not really matching the type of guy I’m sure she would look better with, she chose me. That has to say something. “I love you, too.” I consider her a minute, Blaze still on my mind. “Hey, what if we match him up to one of the girls?”
“Why don’t you worry about making me happy first?” She winks at me and then spins away, giggling as she rushes toward the house.
I chase her inside, but I’m too late. She’s standing by the sink and holding onto the spray nozzle with one hand while holding her other hand over the faucet handle.
Before I can say no, she squirts me with a flash of cold water, laughing her head off.
On the table behind me sits Paul. I reach back and lift him up, high above my head. Her eyes grow wide and round and she puts the nozzle back in its holder. I tilt my head toward her. “Do you want me to get rid of the boyfriend?”
“You wouldn’t.” Savvy holds her hands at chest level, staring at me like I might go crazy any moment.
Slowly, I put the planner back on the table and shake my head. “No, you’re right. I wouldn’t. But I don’t like the competition.”
She moves around the kitchen island and motions toward the planner. “But look. You’re right here.” She lifts up the planner and shows me the front cover. I hadn’t even looked at it.
The cover is plastered with pictures of me Savvy must have taken on the sly. I’m flattered and suddenly not as threatened feeling as I started out being.
I pull her into my arms again and murmur against her lips. “That’s exactly what I needed to see.”
And we kiss and I feel like for once, maybe I’m not going to fail at this thing called love.
Epilogue
Veve: Guys. That’s it. I’ve seen the lovey dovey dopey expressions and happy-ever-after with Savvy and Knox. I’m going to find mine.
Apple: If you get the secret, let me know.
Veve: I’m going to make a challenge for myself. I’m going to go on a blind date as many nights as possible for the next… three months. Let’s open it up for three months? Yes?
Dion: Where are you going to find these guys?
Veve: You’re going to hook me up! I’m so excited. Time to blind date me, guys.
Knox: I might know some people.
Veve: Not David! I’m not dating your brother.
Knox: It’s okay. Calm down. Lol. I won’t fix David up with any of you. Promise.
Alex: I know some guys at my office.
Mandie: There’s a construction site down the road. I’ll see what I can do there for you.
Sara: I’m out. If I knew any guys, I wouldn’t be miserable and alone. Maybe I’ll tag along.
Savvy: Wow, this sounds like fun. So glad I don’t have to do that.
Dion: Don’t be smug, Savvy. Happiness only looks good on good winners.
Knox: I think anything looks good on Savvy.
Dion: Oh, great. Sick.
Veve: My only thing is, don’t take it personally, if I don’t like them or don’t want a second date. I need immediate sparks and I can’t waste time on anyone who doesn’t do that.
Knox: Got it. Sparks.
