The place was set up nicely. It wasn’t easy to see into the gym from the front. It was sectioned off so that when customers walked straight into a lobby they only saw the reception area and a door. That made him feel a bit more comfortable.

“Can I help you, sir?” A perky woman gave him a big smile.

“Ah—yes, I’d like to do a tour of your facilities and maybe sign up for a membership.”

“Let me get one of the trainers.” She winked at him. “If you’ll have a seat, they’ll be right with you.”

Lord save him from happy-happy people. It just wasn’t natural. The chair was a bit uncomfortable, but he didn’t have long to wait. A woman who looked remarkably like the one at the front desk walked up to him.

“Hello! I’m Jeanne, what can I help you with today?” She held out her hand.

Rico stood and shook it. She was just as perky as the other one. What—did they clone these people? No way could they be happy and perfect. It had to be a front. He wondered what lurked underneath. He shook it off and answered.

“I’m Rico and I want to get into better shape.” He stated the obvious. Why else would a fat person be at a gym? It wasn’t like they had sweets. Unless that was a new form of torture where they held the candy out of reach and made people chase it.

He shuddered at the mental image of his fat ass running after a candy bar attached to a fishing pole.

“If you’ll follow me.” Jeanne turned and swiped her hand against an ID plate. Rico heard the clanking of weights.

They must’ve had stellar soundproofing. Walking in, if he hadn’t known that it was a gym, he’d have had no clue. Jeanne slowed down a little until she walked beside him. She was a cute little thing. Blonde hair, blue eyes and—perfect. If he swung that way, he might’ve been interested, but the only thing she did was remind him of tattoos and how those arms would feel wrapped around him.

“Through there are the locker rooms. Were you planning on starting today?” Jeanne looked him up and down.

“No. Um… I just wanted to check things out first. I didn’t bring any clothes and I came straight from work.”

“All right, then.” She clapped her hands together and continued walking. “If you sign up with us today, we’re doing a special for a month’s free membership. That would include the use of a personal trainer. That would be me.” She turned to smile at him. He expected to see rainbows and unicorns twirling around her head at her tone, like some freaky anime. Yep, she was too chipper. “We’ll probably start you off with cardio and a few light weights to help build yourself up. We don’t want to go full-force right away or you’ll hurt something. There are a of couple machines we’ll start with. You’ll change it up so your body doesn’t have time to get bored. The treadmill is always popular to start off with. We also have some ellipticals and bikes. There is an indoor track. To cool down, we’ll probably walk a few laps. The gym also has a hot tub, pool and sauna.” Jeanne pointed things out as they moved around the room.

He wondered if her evil side would come out once they started in on the exercise. Maybe then instead of puppies and kittens he’d see horns and demon-red eyes. He really needed to stop this inner monologue on freakishly happy people. They’d walked a circle around the area and stopped by the door.

  “What are your hours?”

“We’re open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. We do a background check on all of our members and we’ll get your hand scan on file. If you noticed, all the machines have a thumbprint starter. This will log in all of your information in case you come at a time when the trainers aren’t available. This way we can track your improvement and make sure you’re doing the exercises correctly. We run a secure place so our fees are just a bit higher, but we’re totally worth it. If you’d like we can go to my office and look over the contract?”

She seemed just a tad too eager. He wondered if she was the devil in disguise and he was signing his life away, but what the hell, he was going to do this.

Well, I’m signing away my candy privileges.

He sighed and followed her into the office of doom and no more cookies.
