“No,” he said, looking at Aziel. “It’s just him. There must be a little bit of angel left in him after all.”

Delilah gave a sound of cheer, and soon, everyone was crowded around.

Rebekah looked up to see that Aziel was confused. “Can you read the rest?”

“Yes, some of it, but I don’t know why I can.” He had a worried look in his eyes as he scanned the room. All eyes were on him, and even though he couldn’t remember anything, he could finally be of some use. “I can make out most of it.”

“How about that, Bexy? Miracles do happen.”

Rebekah closed her eyes and mumbled a prayer, thankful Aziel had come back to her. “Does it say anything about the stigmata?”

Aziel pointed toward a row of symbols. “Here. That’s what this is. This whole book seems to be one angel’s journal of sorts.”

Ignis’s chest swelled with pride. “And you thought my journaling was silly.”

“Isn’t he smart?” asked Tula, hanging onto Aziel’s arm.

“He is for sure,” said Rebekah, pacifying the naiad while giving Aziel a boost of courage. “So, what does it say?”

“It’s a confession. There is no name of which angel wrote this, but he claims that he saw the book of life. That he warned Hortensius of the impending purpose of his family line. He wasn’t supposed to do that.”

“Why not?” asked Delilah. “It sounds to me like he saved the world.”

Ignis spoke up. “He changed the course of things.”

“The texts are sacred,” said Aziel. “No one is supposed to cast eyes on them. There are consequences if you’re caught.”

“Wait,” Ignis said. “You’re saying that there are books and books of things that will happen here on Earth and in the course of time, but not even the angels can know about them?”

Aziel nodded. “Yes. Certain angels can, those who are assigned to them.”

“Does it say that?” asked Rebekah.

“No,” said Aziel. “But it’s what the angel’s confession is. He not only saw the texts, but he told a mortal man the course of the end times.”

“How do you know that?” asked Jarreth.

Aziel looked up at the hunter. “I have no idea.” He wished he could understand it all.

“That’s it!” said Ignis. “The Prophecy of Hope is about stopping the stigmata. You are still one of Hortensius’s ancestors.”

Delilah’s eyes widened. “You mean, she could be the one to stop the stigmata and save the world?”

“No,” said Rebekah. “I will be the one. The stigmata is here now, and I’m pretty sure the little one over there in Frankie’s belly isn’t capable. So that means I just have to know how.” She turned toward Aziel, who was still focusing hard on the pages as he turned through the book. “How do I catch it and defeat it?”

“It says that darkness can be only trapped by darkness.”

“What does that mean?” Rebekah looked up at Ignis. “Does that even make any sense?”

Ignis shrugged. “How is it killed? We’ll worry about trapping the damned thing later.”

“Sacrifice of Love? Or is that and love?” Aziel shook his head. “I’m sorry. I’m a bit rusty.”

“You’re doing wonderfully, Aziel,” said Tula. “It’s so exciting.”

“It’s love. Love is the sacrifice.” Aziel looked up and smiled, even though he didn’t know what it all meant.

“Does that mean you’re going to lose a loved one?” asked Frankie, who stood over a bucket of melting ice cream.

As Rebekah shook her head, her eyes narrowed and appeared unfocused.

Frankie held her baby bump and wondered what it could possibly have to do with it all. Rebekah had told her the child was linked to the prophecy, but was that still true? What would happen if the child was no longer valuable to the Immortal Huntress? What would happen to them?

Ignis stepped back. His thoughts had been going haywire since the angel deciphered the first words of the book. If Rebekah could be the one to defeat darkness, then she would have to love the darkness.

That could only mean one thing.

He had given up his shadow of darkness long ago, his darkness which had already come into contact with the stigmata. It only made sense that in order for him to trap it, he had to take it on. He had to reconnect with his shadow, making the stigmata a part of himself.

But trapping the stigmata was only the first step. After that task was complete, there was only one thing left to do. Rebekah had to kill him.

In doing that, she would save the world but destroy the Fellowship. Ignis tried to come back down to reality. That couldn’t be. Without the Fellowship of the Hunters, the human race would be overwhelmed with vampires and shifters. Eventually, they’d cease to exist, and all of the vampires would starve. Then, after years and years of agony, the shifters would take over the world. What kind of salvation was that? How would it prevent the end of mankind?

There had to be some mistake or some other way. But even if there wasn’t, Ignis was ready to die for Rebekah.

Love? The word rattled around in Rebekah’s mind, and while she could think of all the people she loved and cared for, not one of them was dark.

But then, as if she’d almost forgotten her own heart, she realized who that darkness was.

  Kayne.
