“Alex, what if…” I didn’t even let her finish her statement. I grabbed her hand and I brought it to my chest. The big diamond ring on her hand glistening in the light.
“It’s going to be fine.” I looked in her eyes and saw her stand a little straighter, she nodded her head rubbed her belly with her free hand.
“Ok, what next?”
“Hospital!” Keeley said out loud.
“Yes, we got to get to the doctors now. I am going to pick you up ok.”
I bent to pick her up and she let out a wail. “No, no, I can’t. I can’t” Vida was at her side in an instant.
“Clean, go get the truck and drive it to the front.” Clean was out of the door before I could finish the sentence.
Mikki reached out her hand to me and I stepped into the grasp. She grabbed onto my shoulders and dropped her head to my chest. I began to sway with her slightly, doing my best to keep my composure.
The compound wasn’t that big, why the fuck was it taking him so long!
The van skidded to a stop a second later.
“I got you Mikki, I swear to you I got you.” I lifted her letting her legs wrap around my midsection and I walked swiftly but gingerly towards the car. I waited for Clean to get out but he didn’t move.
“Are you crazy, get in the back with her.”
I placed her in the back seat and let her get as comfortable as possible.
Clean took off and I expected to hear nothing but the sounds of the tires crunching against the gravel instead, I heard the thunderous sound of my family around us. Their bikes giving us an escort straight to the hospital.
We made it there in record time and when I was able to get her out of the van I saw that the doctor was already outside waiting for us and the van had a trail of at least thirty bikers. All uncles to the little miracle that was about to enter the world.
The doctor and the nursing staff moved fast getting Mikki onto a bed and into a room. I was inpatient to meet my little girl, but I wouldn’t have to wait long.
“Ok, Mikayla, I know we talked about epidurals before but there is no time. Your baby is coming right now.”
“What? Is she ok? It’s so fast.” Mikki grabbed onto me, tears now streaming down her face. I looked up to the doctor and waited for the confirmation.
“The monitors all say she is fine, she just wants to join the party.” He gave a small smile right as Mikki screamed out in agony. I held fast. I wanted to scream, I wanted to faint. I wanted to do everything but wait.
“Ok count to 10 then push.” She did what he asked, I don’t know how many times, but finally on the last time when it felt like she was going to rip the fingers off my hand my daughters head slid out of the birth canal. Seconds later the most glorious cry I had ever heard pierced the sky.
For the first time in a long time, I cried. I let the tears fall out of my eyes. Every piece of me that I thought I had lost along the way, was right there in that little squirming body of hers.
“Loralie.” Mikayla said from her place on the bed. The worry and anguish already gone from her face.
“What? I thought you wanted Mallory?”
“No, she is a Loralie.” She looked up at me for approval.
“Yeah, I think so too.” I kissed her and watched as they placed my soul on my new wife’s chest where she nuzzled and fell fast to sleep.
