The Woman on the Pier

‘OK, Evan. We’re going to start with something we’ve spoken a little bit about before, but haven’t properly. It’s about Caroline Byrne and the time she spent in your house.’

I was waiting for this. And I nod, to show I’m OK with her carrying on. I’m OK telling my story, the story of everything that led to this moment. And I’m going to be OK afterwards. It’s the first time I’ve realised that. Because if there’s one thing my conversations with Jessica taught me, it’s that even when things are as dark as they can be, hope can come along when you least expect it. I’ve got through terrible things in the past, and I’ll get through this.

‘Do you have any idea why Caroline Byrne was in contact with your brother, and why she may have been in the house the night your brother died?’

I know she knows already. I know she must have spoken to Caroline’s husband. But it’s my turn now. My turn to give my side of the story. For me. For Michael. And for Jessica.

‘Yes,’ I say, my voice catching a bit as I try to speak. ‘Me. She was there because of me.’

  Acknowledgments

I’d first like to thank all the readers who picked up my three previous books, recommended them to friends and helped bring them to the attention of others by leaving reviews online. I’m enormously grateful.

As always, endless thanks to my parents, sisters Molly and Amy, granny and uncle, and to all my close friends for their support throughout my time as an author, especially during the difficult times of the pandemic and all the uncertainty this period has brought with it.

I would like to thank my wonderful agent Joanna Swainson and everyone at Hardman & Swainson for being such a brilliant team. Huge thanks to Bethan Morgan, Charlotte Ledger, Kimberley Young, Melanie Price, Lucy Bennett, Claire Fenby, Sara Roberts, Emma Petfield and everyone at One More Chapter and HarperCollins. It’s brilliant to be at a publisher so enthusiastic and supportive and filled with such kind and generous people. I consider myself incredibly lucky. Many thanks to Phoebe Morgan and the team at Avon for their work during the initial development of this book.

Huge thanks to Bea Carvalho and the whole books team at Waterstones for championing my previous novel, The Dinner Guest. It’s all been a dream come true and I’ll be forever grateful to everyone who helped make that happen. A massive thank you to all my former colleagues in the Waterstones Ecommerce team and to all the booksellers across the world who have been so amazing at pressing my novels into the hands of readers. It’s more wonderful than words can say.

  Thank you for reading…
