The group began walking upstairs when the doorbell rang yet again. “At least everyone’s punctual,” Clarissa said with a laugh. “I’ll go give the food to Jackson.”
“I got the door,” Troy said. He turned around and opened it, and Taryn saw Hailey and Grayson standing there.
She waved at them both but continued up the stairs as the small foyer and stairway were already getting crowded. Jackson came walking in, grinning, and he ducked down for a quick kiss. She practically shivered as his hand rested on the small of her back, pulling her close.
Her ribs had completely healed now, and she and Jackson had spent the morning making love. She’d sat astride him, her legs spread wide as she rode his cock. One of his hands had gripped her hip, steadying her, the other at the small of her back, just as it was now.
Jackson winked, knowing she was thinking the same thing that he was. He ducked down, his lips at her ear. “Tonight, sweetheart,” he promised. “We’ll do it all over again.”
Troy chuckled as he watched them. “Hey K-Bar, get a room,” he joked. His date giggled and lightly swatted at him. He grinned even wider and pulled her into his arms for a searing kiss.
Blake popped the top of a beer bottle and looked around at the group that had already assembled. “I can’t believe we’re already having another celebration. K-Bar has officially moved in with Taryn. She must be a saint for being willing to put up with him—”
“Boo!” Logan interjected loudly as the others laughed.
“She’s damn lucky to have you,” Blake said with a grin.
“Amen to that,” Jackson said, grabbing his own longneck and toasting his SEAL team leader. “And I’m lucky as hell to have her.”
“And I’m thrilled you’re staying here,” Clarissa said. “It wouldn’t have been the same if you moved in with Jackson.”
“Who wants a margarita?” Hailey asked. “Ladies? We never did get to have our girls’ night.”
The group moved around the kitchen, grabbing drinks and appetizers for themselves as Jackson and some of the guys headed out to the deck to start grilling. The doorbell rang again, and Taryn excused herself, hurrying downstairs.
Ethan was frowning as she opened the door.
“Hi. Is everything okay?” she asked.
He shook his head. “We might be headed out tomorrow. Shit. Jackson will be pissed I just told you that. This is supposed to be a celebration.”
“Come on in,” she said, shutting the door behind him. “What happened? I mean, I know you can’t really tell me, but you look upset.”
“You remember Hailey’s friend?”
Taryn nodded. “The one who was missing.”
“They found her.”
Taryn gasped as Ethan excused himself, jogging up the steps to talk to his teammates. By the time she’d locked the door and headed upstairs, she saw all of the guys glancing down at their cell phones.
Jackson moved toward her, his eyes worried. “Hell, sweetheart. This is supposed to be a party, but the guys and I have to leave tomorrow.”
“Ethan just told me.”
“Fuck,” he muttered.
Taryn reached up, putting her hand on his cheek. “It’s okay, baby. This is nothing like your last op. Austin is dead, remember? I’ll be fine when you’re gone.”
He swallowed and nodded. “I know. I just hate to leave you.”
“You’ll do your job,” she assured him. “What if it was me that had been kidnapped?”
“I’d search the ends of the earth to find you.”
Taryn nodded. “And you’ll find Hailey’s friend.”
“Hell, I love you,” Jackson said, ducking down for a kiss. The others were talking around them, discussing the pending op and the need to cut the night short after they ate. Normally the women would never know about their mission and where they were headed, but this was personal. And Hailey would’ve found out at work anyway. Nothing about the situation was normal.
At the moment, it didn’t matter though. Taryn knew Jackson would be safe as he rushed off to save the world once again. He’d saved her more than once, first as she’d struggled just to get by and then from her crazy ex-husband. She knew her life would never be the same because of him, and she couldn’t be happier.
“I love you, too,” she whispered.
And then Jackson kissed her again, passionately, deeply, their bodies pressed together, until the only thing that mattered was that moment and the two of them. Forever.
