Victor's Girl: A Mafia Romance
Page 17
“That took you quite some time my friend,” A familiar voice spoke up and waves of joy ran through her veins. He was here, her Victor was here; he had come to save her, her heart flooded with joy and with a sudden rush of adrenaline she kicked him so hard that he had no other choice but to drop her down. She pushed him off guard and sprinted towards Victor and crashed into his rock hard chest wrapping her arms around him.
He buried his face in her hair inhaling a heavy whiff of her intoxicating scent. Finally, his angel was in his arms safe and sound. She buried her face in his chest and burst into tears. “I’m sorry Victor, I’m sorry!” she sobbed in his chest and he gently stroked her hair letting her cry in his arms. “It’s okay angel, you are safe now.” he crooned to her and placed a gentle kiss on her hair.
He slowly released her from his arms and brushed her hair off her face examining her from head to toe, he noticed the bruises on her face and his fists clenched, “Did he hurt you?” he asked her softly and she nodded in response
“He hit me,” she told him, gesturing to her swollen cheeks. Anger shot to his eyes and he knew what he was going to do with that bastard. “He’s going to pay for this, Angel, I promise you that.” she swallowed hard and nodded.
He turned his attention to the moron who was now surrounded by his men, “Did you think that a lowlife like you can come to my city and take my girl and get away with it? You made a huge mistake by challenging me and now you are going to pay for it.” He pushed Ira behind him protectively as he stepped forward.
Markus held on to his gun as his life depended on it. He took a step back knowing that he was trapped, without the girl he was a dead man. He took another step back all set to make a run back to the safe house when he felt a gun pressed to his back. “Don’t even think about it.” Kevin’s warning tone rang through his ears making him almost jump out of his skin. “Now be a good boy and put your gun down,” he added his voice calm and cold.
Markus hesitantly dropped his gun to the concrete ground and raised his hand in surrender. Watching his plan backfired at him; his carefully planned strategy had completely fallen apart and he did not understand how.
Victor’s mouth curled in satisfaction as he watched the confusion in his nemesis’s eyes but a mere surrender was not enough for him. He wanted to see him crying in pain as he beat the shit out of him for all the pain he had inflicted on his angel he deserved so much more than that.
Kevin nudged him to move and he helplessly stepped forward. He resisted to move for a long minute but the look on Victor’s face was enough for him to get his feet moving. “How did you find us?” he demanded, unable to hold back his curiosity. It still did not make sense to him how his carefully planned plot had been busted.
Victor’s lips curled into a smug smile. “Who do you think sold this place to you in the first place?” he replied with a smirk playing around his face. Confusion washed over his face and he watched him with eyes wide and jaws down. Victor raised his hand and tilted his jaw back up with the nuzzle of his gun. “You my friend were so busy plotting your quest to bring me down that you didn’t even realize what was going on in your own home.”
Markus still looked confused like nothing made any sense to him. “You send your spy into my gang and think I would never find out? That was your first mistake. We had figured out the second mole the day our Dubai crate got confiscated by the narcotics and we decided to play you with your own game. Unsurprisingly your man turned out to be more stupid then we thought.”
He gave a dramatic pause enjoying the look on his face, “He kept feeding you exactly what we wanted you to know and here you are right where we wanted you to be. The only mistake you made was dragging my girl into this. You could have walked out of this alive if you hadn’t laid a finger on my girl. But now…” he trailed off with a mocking grin on his face.
His face paled visibly and he tried to make a run one last time but was effortlessly taken down by Kevin. Victor raised his gun at Markus and the man’s face turned pale. “And now it’s time for you to die.” he was just about to pull the trigger when he felt a gentle hand on his shoulder and he didn’t have to turn around to know who it was.
“We don’t have to kill him, Victor; there could be other ways to teach him a lesson.” she pleaded to him, her voice gentle like a morning breeze. He turned towards her with confused eyes, he caressed her swollen cheek and she winced in pain. “You are asking me to spare his life even after what he did to you?” he asked her in disbelief.
A smile crossed her face as she spoke, “You can’t fight darkness with darkness, Victor. We don’t have to stoop to his level, we are better than that.” he frowned at her, “So what do you suggest? We let this bastard go and give him a chance to screw us all over again?” he demanded.
She shook her head, “Let's get him arrested and make him take the fall for all the smuggling activities going on in the region. In that way, you can hit two birds with a single stone.”
Victor exchanged a look with Kevin who had a weird grin on his face like he was considering what she had just suggested, “Getting rid of this bastard and getting the feds off our backs sounds like a plan to me.” he replied to his unasked question flashing an approving smile at her. Victor’s lips curled into a grin, and he turned around to face his men.
“So it’s decided, this moron lives. But I leave you boys responsible to make sure that he says exactly what we want him to say in court. Kevin, make sure that we arrange all the necessary evidence to guarantee his conviction in case he turns cold turkey in court.” he turned to face her and found her staring at him with awe.
He stepped close to her and gently cupped her face in his hands, her big beautiful eyes watched him as several emotions crossed his eyes but one emotion that stood out was love. “I’m the king of this city, Angel, and what you just did was something only a good queen would do. I want you to be my queen and stand by my side forever.” He closed his eyes and sighed.
“Ira, when I was a child, my mother had told me that one day an angel would walk into my life and fill my world with so much light that the darkness around me would get destroyed all at once. When I first laid my eyes on you I knew you were my angel because no other girl had ever made me feel the way you did, complete. I lived all my life feeling incomplete and empty, you made me feel whole again.”
Tears rimmed her eyes and her heart puffed with so much love for this man that for a minute all her woes and pain were completely forgotten. “Oh Victor,” she breathed, squeezing his hand affectionately. He brought her hand to his mouth and pressed his lips on the back of her hand.
“I’m a dark soul angel, I need you to guide me back to light.” his heart surged with so many emotions but he didn’t know how to voice them all out. “When you asked me what you were to me, I did not have an answer for it. I was in denial,” he brought her hand to his chest and pressed it against his heart. “Here, do you feel it?” he asked her, gesturing to his beating heart. “That’s what you are to me. You are my heart, my lifeline, my redemption and my everything.”
He closed his eyes and let his tears roll down his cheek; this was all new to him. He had never thought that he would bare his soul before anybody but he was glad he did. He opened his eyes and met her teary gaze, “I love you, Ira.” he breathed, meaning every word he uttered.
A sob escaped her lips and happy tears rolled down her cheeks. “I love you too, Victor,” she replied, letting a smile touch her lips. He slowly got down on his knees and took her hands in his. “Ira, my angel; When you left me, I realized without you my world is nothing, I need you by my side always and forever. I know I’m no knight in shining armour but I want to be you’re happily ever after. Marry me, Ira, save me from my darkness.”
Her eyes brimmed with tears and a soft sob escaped her lips and she covered her mouth muffling her sobs. “Marry me, Angel, please.” he pleaded his eyes rimmed with anticipation. His heart pounded in his chest and the fear of rejection kept clawing at his chest.
‘Please say yes, Ira’ he pleaded to her in his head again and again as he watched a number of emotions across her beautiful face, but one that stood out was joy.
She closed her eyes and pinched herself making sure this was not a dream, surely this wasn’t a dream. This was so much better than any dream she had ever had. “Angel, my knees hurt,” he complained, dragging her out of her daze. He had this nervous look on his face and she couldn’t help but drink in the sight. Victor the mafia king of the city is nervous for her.
God, he looked adorable.
“Yes,” the words were a whisper but he heard it. “Yes Victor, I will be yours, always and forever.” tears rimmed his eyes as he stood up processing what she had just said. He cupped her face and kissed her passionately letting his joy penetrate through their lips and for a moment the world around them disappeared and the heat between them blazed like an inferno.
He broke the kiss and turned his attention to his men, “She said, yes.” he shouted and the crowd roared in excitement. He turned his attention to her and she raised a perfectly shaped eyebrow at him, “Now what?” she asked him softly, her eyes glistening with a mischievous glint and he found himself grinning back at her and brushed the pad of his thumb over her beautiful mouth. "For now, I’m taking my girl home.”
EPILOGUE
Victor paced impatiently as he waited for the dreaded double doors to open. He glared at his watch for the nth time and ran his impatient fingers through his already messed up hair. With every passing second, he was growing more and more impatient and his urge to break the freaking door was getting stronger and stronger.
It has been six hours since she went into labor and almost two hours since he was kicked out of the labor room. Why? The reason was simple: he fainted. As shameful as it sounds it was true. He had never imagined that seeing his angel in so much pain was going to be so unbearable for him. Of course, he knew that childbirth was hard but he had no idea that it was this horrifying.
If he had even the slightest idea that childbirth was this painful he would have never got her pregnant. But then again she had been so excited about having a baby that he didn’t have the heart to say no to her, even if that meant he had to share her with another creature. Even if that creature was his own flesh and blood.
He closed his eyes and let out a frustrated sigh, right now he was way too nervous to think anything straight. He was nervous, scratch that he was way past nervous, he was freaking out. She had gone into labor almost a week before her due date and he was worried sick. Though he kept telling himself that they are going to be alright, his heart was not ready to calm down.
He let out a heavy sigh and slumped down on the chair next to her mother. "If they don't open the door in five minutes I swear I will...” he paused reading his surroundings. His mother-in-law put her hand in his shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze. “She’s going to be fine son, have faith.” She assured him in a soft gentle tone. A knowing smile danced on her face as she watched him squirm in his seat.
In the past five years, she had completely recovered from her cancer and Victor had moved her and her twins to the city. He had even got them a new apartment downtown and enrolled the kids in a good school. He had sent Ira back to college and they had waited for her to graduate before they started trying for a baby.
It was all like a dream come true to him, having her in his life had made him realise how fucked up his life used to be before her. He had never known what true happiness had felt until he had made her his wife. She had made his house a home and her light had brightened his dark-dark world.
So much had changed in his life that sometimes it all felt like a dream, a really beautiful dream that he did not want to wake up from. He had even changed his style of work for her. He now followed a more ‘diplomatic’ approach than his usual ‘find them and shoot them’ approach he had followed for years.
She was the queen his empire needed and his boys adored her and she took care of them like her own family. Which was something he had never thought was possible. No other girl would have done even 1% of what she had done for him and that alone was enough for him to stay indebted to her for life. He impatiently ran his fingers through his now messy hair trying his best to drag himself from his chain of thoughts.
Kevin rolled his eyes at him, “Calm down man, you are scaring everyone here.” And how does that concern him? “Piss off Kev, my wife is going through hell and I have no idea what’s going on.” Kevin couldn’t help but smile at his best friend. It was nice to see him like this, happy and content. Sometimes he wondered if God would ever bless him with a girl like that.
Someday buddy, someday.
After what felt like forever the door finally opened and a nurse stepped out holding a tiny bundle of joy in her arms. For a minute everything went perfectly still. Victor’s heart nearly stopped beating as he rose from his chair, his eyes resting on the part of his soul that had just stepped into this world.
The elderly nurse walked up to him with a soft smile dancing on his lips. Victor blinked in anticipation, his heart pounding in his chest. “Congratulations Sir, it’s a girl,” she told him as she gently passed the little bundle of joy into his arms. He stared at the face of the newly born angel and his heart was filled with so much joy that he knew that nothing in this world can bring him so much happiness as this little creature had brought in by her mere existence.
“My perfect little angel,” he crooned to the little one who could barely open her eyes. He leaned down and placed a soft kiss on her forehead and she stirred in her sleep. His heart puffed in joy, his little girl had just accepted him and the feeling overwhelmed him with the kind of happiness only a man holding his new-born baby girl could feel.
God, she was so perfect.
“Come on Victor, let us have a look at her too,” his mother-in-law gushed as she gently took the little one from his arms and walked away to show her to the rest of her family. He stood there and watched his little girl charm the rest of his family and a proud smile touched his perfect lips.
His little Angel, already spreading her light.
The doctor stepped out of the emergency room and he hurried towards him. “How is she, Doctor?” he demanded making the middle-aged man stop on his tracks. He turned towards him and greeted him with a bright smile. “Hello Victor, congratulations,” he told him with a brilliant smile on his face.
“How is my wife, Doctor?” he repeated ignoring his remark. His smile widened, “She’s fine, a little bit exhausted but still fine, we are keeping her in the ICU for a day or so then we will move her to a private ward.”
“Can I see her?” he asked him, the hesitation in his eyes was clear and the doctor flashed him a knowing look. “In some time, yes. For now, have a nice day.” he patted his back and excused himself and walked away leaving him fending for his thoughts.
Victor felt a hand on his shoulder and he turned around only to find Kevin standing behind him with a soft smile on his face. “Don’t worry buddy, she’s going to be fine,” he assured him. Victor gave his hand a gentle squeeze, “I hope so, man.”
“Come on buddy, this is no time for brooding. We should celebrate this,”
Victor raised an eyebrow, “Celebrate ha? You haven’t even congratulated me yet.” he pointed out. Kevin threw his head back and laughed, he was waiting for him to bring up this topic.
“Well, that little girl right there…” he said pointing at the little bundle of joy, “She’s not just your daughter, she’s my daughter too. You may be her biological father and all but she’s still my daughter.”
Victor stared at him for a long minute and then pulled him into a bone-crushing hug. “You are the best thing to ever happen to me Kev; I don’t know what I would have done without you.” Kevin rolled his eyes, “Come on man, I say one sweet thing and you go all Bollywood on me?” Victor threw his head back and laughed, a bright happy laugh. “Come on, let’s go see our daughter,” he told him and dragged him back to his family.
/> “She looks just like you.” The elderly nurse gushed to Ira as she gently handed the infant to her. She tenderly held the little creature in her arms, her eyes brimming with tears. “You are so beautiful.” She murmured to her little girl and she whimpered in response, slightly opening her tiny grey eyes to her, getting the first glimpse of her mother.
Ira lifted her gaze to the kind woman and acknowledged her with a polite nod, “Thank you.” she breathed, her voice barely a whisper. The nurse smiled back at her. “Don’t worry love, you will be fine.” She conducted her routine check and then excused herself, leaving her alone with her new-born angel.
“I hear you already have fans.” She cooed to the little one and she stared back at her with half-open eyes. Ira couldn’t help but smile down at the little girl “My perfect little doll.” She gushed with a soft giggle as she brought the little creature to her chest and closed her eyes sucking in her warmth.
She sensed him even before he could make his presence known. Her eyes fluttered open and were immediately locked with his. “Hey,” she greeted him softly and a smile touched his lips. “How are you feeling?” He asked her as he gently stroked her hair placing a gentle kiss on her hair. He placed a soft kiss over his little one's hair and Ira giggled in delight.
“She’s beautiful isn’t she?” She asked him and he replied with a bright smile. “Yes, she is.” Pride oozed in his voice and it penetrated through her. “Thank you,” He told her quietly as he watched her with tender eyes, Ira frowned at him, “For what?” She asked him, her tone soft and concerned.
“For everything,” he replied absolutely and a soft smile touched her lips. “I’m the one who should be thanking you, Victor. You have done so much for me. That nobody would do that to anybody,” She told him honestly referring to the way that he had saved her from her miserable life and they helped improve the lives of her family and not to mention being the best husband on the planet.
