I turned my head, and my tail was gone. Shit, I was cloaked.

“Raven, you may reappear,” Anton said. Was I imagining it, or was there a sense of pride in his voice?

Golden demon, I need to uncloak.

As I thought that, I was back. I looked over at Lucien, and victory shone in his eyes.

  Aooooo

  Xavier and Poppy howled.

Dante and Rhys were throwing their fists in the air. “Raven, Raven, Raven.”

The girls were all clapping, even Vivian, Demi, and Eden.

“Raven, I need you to do the fire test.”

  Lucien winked.

I faced the dreaded pyres and prayed this would work. I remember what he had done at Mt. Elbert.

I could do this. Golden demon, I need to use the heat generation to produce fire.

Strange sensations burned in my chest and rose up my throat. I opened my mouth, and fire spewed out. The first wood pyre sparked and glowed.

  I blinked. I couldn’t believe it.

  Again, Golden demon.

I blew again, and flames burst over the second wood pyre higher and brighter than the first one. I took a deep breath and exhaled fire, and the third pyre turned into a roaring fire.

  Thank you, Golden demon.

I never saw a figure in my mind, but something was there. I shifted into a human. I got dressed as fast as I could, because the Defenders rushed toward me. I only had my bra and underwear on, but Lucien grabbed me and twirled me around.

“You did it. You did it.”

I laughed at the joy in his eyes.

Bo grabbed me out of his arms. “God, you’re amazing.”

“Hey, you big he-mans.” Mina had the rest of my clothes. “Let the poor girl get dressed.”

Bo released me, and I finished dressing just as Heath, Professor Soto, and Anton reached us. My cheering squad died down.

  I held my breath.

  “Congratulations,” Anton said. “You passed.”

I jumped in the air and screamed, “Yes!”

Heath shook my hand. “I never would have believed it. I judged you wrong. I will let the king know.”

Professor Soto smiled. “Good job, Raven.” She winked. “I’ll see you in class tomorrow.”

“Not until we celebrate,” Rhys said. “This calls for a High Tempest.”

Bo groaned. “I don’t know if I can have another one of those.”

Lucien clapped him on the back. “Yeah, you will. We need to have at least one to celebrate.”

After drinking and partying, Mina and I dragged ourselves to bed. It was too early in the morning when we heard a loud knock on the door.

I rolled out of bed and opened the door to Baron Germaine. “Good morning, sleepy heads. Anton would like you in his office before you start school.”

Uneasiness slipped into my already hungover gut. “Is anything wrong?”

“I don’t know, but I suggest you hurry.”

Within twenty minutes, I was dressed and headed over to Anton’s. Lucien was waiting for me.

  “Did he summon you?”

  “Yeah, the others are inside.”

  “Who?”

  “The Royals, who else?”

I bit my lip. “You don’t think he changed his mind, do you?”

“No. I don’t think so.” He held my hand, and we walked in together.

“Ah, Raven,” Anton said. “You look good after a night of indulgence.”

“Don’t talk so loud,” Bo grumbled. “My head’s killing me.”

“Better than Bo here.” He gestured toward the chair in front of his desk. “Please sit.”

Butterflies banged against my ribs, and I couldn’t stop tapping my foot.

“I want to thank you for coming.”

Rhys yawned. “Like we had a choice.”

“No, I guess you didn’t. I wanted to let you know I discovered another prophesy.”

  “About me?”

  “Yes.”

I glanced nervously up at Lucien. “What is it?”

Anton looked down at another book. “One will rise. Unleash a fire. Discover another. Don’t Despair. Hope is near.”

“Are you saying that’s about me?”

Anton looked up from the book. “Yes. I am.”

  Lucien frowned. “What’s ‘discover another?’”

“That’s what we all need to find out,” Anton said. “This book is not an angel book.”

Lucien stepped closer. “That’s from my dad.”

“Yes, it’s not from the Golden Demons. It’s a far older book––one written before the Dark Demons and Golden Demons were separated.”

  “Who wrote it?”

“The Archangel Azrael. The Angel of Death.”

I could feel the blood drain from my face. “What do I have to do with the Angel of Death?”

“We’ve been down this road before. She’s not evil,” Bo blurted.

“I didn’t say she was. You’re all confusing death with evil. Death can also mean change, and I believe Raven is the storm of change. That’s why Ryker fears and wants her so much.”

  “He fears me?” I asked.

“Change is very scary to people, especially if they think they will lose something.”

“What’s he going to lose?” I asked.

“I’m not sure. We need to find out, and the only way for all of you to do so, is to grow stronger in your powers.”

“And you’re telling us this why?” Lucien asked.

“Because once again, the Defenders will be called upon to help Raven on her next journey.”

  “So, I’m not being expelled.”

“No, but there always could be a next time.”

  I sucked in my breath.

Anton laughed. “Sorry, I couldn’t resist.” He glanced up at the clock. “You all have time for breakfast. Learn your studies. Don’t disappointment me.”

I couldn’t believe it. The Angel of Death had written a prophesy, and it was about me. I couldn’t fathom this.

Once we left, Lucien pulled me toward the blue spruce, away from the others.

  “Are you okay?”

“Would you be if the angel of death had written about you?”

“The angel of change.” He slipped his hand around my neck and captured my lips, stirring my heart. “I don’t know about the others, but you’ve definitely changed me. I’ll never look at another woman like I do you.”

  “But you’re a golden demon.”

He smiled. “And so are you. Otherwise you wouldn’t have been able to call upon that power.”

“But we’re supposed to be purebreds.”

“I don’t care. Outlaws have more fun.”

He kissed me again out in the open, and I couldn’t help but wonder if he was branding me as his, daring anyone to come between us.
