The Ragged

“I just can’t believe that three men were able to take so many lives,” Andrew said after a moment of silence. “And I can’t believe how close I was to two of them without ever knowing what they were doing.”
“You can’t blame yourself for that,” Celeste said. “No one knew. And besides, it’s over now. At least all of those girls’ families will be able to finally rest, knowing the truth.”
“And how are we supposed to rest?” He asked, staring forward.
Celeste took a step forward and turned to face him.
“I don’t know if we ever will,” she said, taking his hand. “But what I do know, is that we’ll figure it all out together.”
“But is that enough? After everything that’s happened to us, how can we ever believe in anything good ever again?”
Celeste brought Andrew’s hand to her lips and kissed it, contemplating what he had said.
“Because we’re alive,” she said after a while. “And we’re together. And to me, that’s proof that no amount of evil can snuff out the good. There will always be something worth living for if we’re willing to put in the effort to find it. So come on, Andrew Wilson. Pull the ripcord, and we can go find the good together.”
Celeste led Andrew out of the pharmacy, and together the two of them walked across the empty parking lot to their rental car, where Gracie lay asleep in the backseat.
