One of Those Days

He followed close behind, his rhythm faltering until he cried out, his release pumping into me as his shaft jerked inside me.
We collapsed to the mattress together, him rolling to the side and pulling me into his arms.
I rested my head against his chest, and I fought to gain control of my breathing. His heart was pounding under my ear and I laid my hand next to it, feeling the hard beats against my palm.
We lay together for a while in silence as I just basked in the warmth of his body so close to mine. Sleep pulled at me, even though it was barely seven p.m., it had been a crazy day and had definitely taken a toll.
“I got a call from the hospital today,” he said softly as he ran his fingers through my hair.
“Yeah?”
“They want me to come back full time.”
I rolled off him and sat up, pulling the covers over my chest as I leaned against the headboard.
“Do you want to go back?”
He sat up too, climbing under the comforter with me and turning to meet my gaze.
“I don’t know,” he answered honestly.
I ran a hand over my stomach and thought about what it would be like to have a third baby. Another child that he got to be home with all day while I went off to a job that I loved but stressed me out and took me away from my family more than I wanted.
“You know I’ll support anything you want to do,” I promised.
“I know,” he said quickly. “I don’t know what I want.”
“What if I stayed home with the kids?”
He looked at me, searching my face as if he could find the answer he wanted there.
“That’s not what I’m asking,” he said.
“I know,” I assured him. “But…” I shrugged. “What if I want to?”
“Do you want to?”
“If we do have another baby, I don’t want to miss everything I missed with the twins. Plus, we have this beautiful house now, and…I don’t know. I’d kind of like to be here and help make it a home.”
“You love your job,” he reminded me.
“Sometimes.” I leaned my head on his shoulder. “I like being your wife more. I’m gone all the time, I’m exhausted and distracted. Liam, I forgot our anniversary. That’s not how I want to live the rest of our lives together. We’re supposed to be partners, and I haven’t been holding up my end of that bargain.”
“You’re the best wife ever,” he argued. “This wasn’t why I brought it up.”
“I know it’s not,” I said. “But it’s a conversation that’s probably been a long time coming.” I looked around the room and smiled. “Besides babe, you’ve got a new house to pay for.”
He chuckled and kissed the top of my head.
“It’s a good plan,” I said. “I think we should do it.”
“I just want you to be happy,” he said.
“Being here with the kids, being home when you get back from work, meeting you at the door with a drink and your slippers, that shit would make me happy.”
He pinched my leg and I giggled as I tried to get away from him.
“Okay, okay,” I said, knocking his hand away. “Maybe not the slippers. But it might be good for me to be a housewife for a while.”
“If you’re sure,” he said, tilting my face up and staring into my eyes.
“I am sure,” I promised him. “Call them back and tell them you can start in two weeks.”
“I love you,” he said.
“I love you, more.”
Truth was, of course, that we loved each other more than should have been humanly possible. We weren’t perfect by any means, but our marriage was about as close to perfection as we could get.
As we settled down into our new bed, in our new home, preparing to move into a new chapter in our lives, I couldn’t have been happier or more excited to do it with Liam by my side.
