Thank you for reading!
Delia
I will do this.
I have to.
I tried to tell myself everything was going to be okay. But I had no possible way of reassuring myself.
It’s usually a lie when people say it, anyway, but in this situation, it was plain fucking ridiculous.
Every day, ‘Be a good girl Delia. Smile. Don’t get in trouble.’
Because there are no second chances.
Not anymore.
And so, the vast majority of humanity was stuck in a slowly losing battle against the crushing weight of corporate plutocracy run amok.
All struggling from birth to death to stay a few inches above slavery.
Working sixteen to eighteen-hour days for twenty-eight days a month and then trying to forget their lives through shitty holovids and narcotics.
But me? I was a perfect citizen.
To all eyes, I never did anything wrong.
I just had one little secret.
Tech had become the lover I’d never found. Sleepless nights had been filled by pouring through the DarkWeb, learning everything I could, experimenting with scraps of discarded tech.
Abandoned systems.
Until somehow, I’d become a top fucking hacker that could transform software and tech without even really thinking about it.
I had a reputation on the web.
Slasher was famous. Delia was not.
But it didn’t matter in the end.
True to form, when I was arrested, they said they would haul in my whole family since I was a systemic threat to order. I was labeled an infrastructure terrorist. Mom and dad would most likely be split up.
Dad would be put to work in the precious metals refineries till he died and Mom would be shipped off to wherever else the U.N.A. needed bodies.
I was given one last chance. If I volunteered for some experiment, I could save my family.
They would never even know. I’d disappear, but they’d get a monthly stipend.
Of course, I’d never know if the government paid out, but
What could I do?
I took the deal.
And now, I was cold.
And everything was very definitely not alright.
The thin jumpsuit wasn’t doing anything to keep me warm. I’d been given a sedative and woke up in this strange room.
The hard floor was uncomfortable and there was no bed. The cell was tiny, barely three paces wide in any direction, all smooth blue gray metal, rounded corners.
“Back away from the door, now.”
I scrambled backwards from the small door that connected with what sounded like a hallway.
A skinny guy in a black jumpsuit headed toward my door. He was top level security, with that fancy uniform, and he had a short guy with him in a gray outfit.
I braced myself as they came in, but I didn’t move. If I was uncooperative, they warned me the deal could be revoked in seconds.
“Stay there.” Tall and skinny trained his weapon on me. The smaller guy stepped forward, holding a long tube. He pressed it to the underside of my forearm and the thing hissed and clicked.
There was a sharp, burning pain. I yelped, jumping in place, but the pain passed quickly. It left a small red lump on my arm.
“What did you…what is it?”
The medtech stood back up. “Just a tracker. No problem. Good entry point. Should be no infection.”
He examined my arm like I was just a piece of meat, then they left. Soldier guy kept his weapon trained on me until they shut the door again.
I stayed sitting on the floor, back against the wall. There was nothing else I could do.
It was too cold, just in my standard uniform. I guessed prisoners didn’t get blankets or jackets.
Or answers.
Two guys approached the front of the cell. It had a small section of bars but otherwise was completely enclosed with the blueish gray metal. I jumped up and gripped the bars. The guys were in green uniforms. Maintenance or personnel. Lower level workers who were just doing a job so they wouldn’t end up like me.
“Hey guys!” I was so relieved to see someone who might distract me from my thoughts, I grabbed the bars and yelled out to them. “Anyone know where I’m going? Anyone?”
They looked up from a file folder and scowled at me. I took a step back and felt my face fall. No one would tell me anything.
They went over some papers and muttered to each other. One finally nodded and stepped forward. He pressed his hand to the wall. There was a sharp click.
Around me sharp, clanging sounds of shifting metal rang out.
“Oh, shit.” I looked around, waiting for spikes to jump out of the wall.
“Pod clamps released.” The guy said as he stepped back. “Ejection in 5 seconds. Safety protocols in place.”
“What the fuck?”
I wished one of them would answer me.
The clangs turned into swishes and I could hear big sweeping sounds in the walls. The little bar covered window was getting closed over with metal plates and a small clear spot opened on the other side.
It seemed like another window, but there was nothing but black on the other side.
What the hell?
I turned around and pounded on the bars. There was only a small hole left.
“Guys! What’s happening? Guys!” I cried out, fearful.
One of them pushed buttons on a small device.
“Wormhole 638 has been opened. Subject is being transported.”
A metal plate swished down to seal the door completely. I walked over to the window, which became quite wide, taking up the whole side of the pod.
The blackness shifted. Sparkled.
Wormhole.
They’d said wormhole.
Purples, pinks and blues swirled around me, twisting through the pod itself.
“Oh, shit!”
For a moment, I felt like I’d been stretched like putty, turned inside out and around again.
By the time the colors faded, I was limp on the floor, exhausted.
Was that a…
The curve of a planet broke the blackness of space below me.
No question, it was getting closer.
And it very definitely wasn’t Earth.
The air went red with the burn of entry through the atmosphere. I sat down in a corner, too scared to look out the window. It felt way too fast.
Maybe the experiment was on how broken a human body would when dropped on a strange planet. Or how loud a human female can scream when she’s terrified.
I’d given them lots of data
on that.
Finally, with a sudden hiss the interior walls expanded, filled to become firm pillows of air.
Impact still sucked.
A lot.
The lights went out. I stayed on the cold floor, waiting for something to happen.
Eventually the door swished open, and an electronic voice spoke sweetly.
“You have arrived at your destination. Have a nice day.”
Delia
I held my breath as long as I could, until with painful gasps I let go.
And… didn’t die.
“Let’s count that two wins for the day, alright?” I muttered. “Survived landing, didn’t asphyxiate on the door landing WITHOUT TESTING ANYTHING FIRST!”
I kicked a pillow that slowly deflated with a sad sound.
Seriously. Whoever designed this experiment didn’t think some things through.
The pod had rolled so that the door was just a short way up the wall. I reached for it and grabbed the edge. I pulled myself up and threw a leg over, clambering and slipping down the side.
The pod was a small, almost perfect sphere of gray. It seemed dead, no lights on or movement. If I could see anything like a control panel, I might have tried to hack it and turn this baby around.
Even if I could plot a return course, what would I do?
Find a way to open a wormhole? Try to go home?
They would shoot me down at best. Kill my family at worst. I was being tracked.
I took two steps away from the pod. I could see mountains around me, not too distant.
Wherever I was, the temperature wasn’t bad. The soil was light and sandy; not far away I could see some dark blue trees and bright orange bushes. A yellowish, dry looking grass grew in scattered patches.
I took another few steps, turning around.
The yellowish grass changed colors, darkening into a burnt umber as it got closer to the trees. They looked green, almost shockingly normal.
I seemed to have landed in a wide meadow.
And nothing moved that I could see.
The breeze rustled the leaves, and I jumped.
From behind the pod, I heard a rustling sound.
Not leaves.
I turned to face the noise, stepping back slowly.
Over the top of the pod, two long slender spines gripped the edge, a sharp clicking filling the air.
“Oh, hell no.”
A great big mother fucking spider looking thing crawled over the top of the pod. I could see all its eyes and mandibles.
The tough legs made bony, sharp clangs as it climbed over the pod. Clear fluid leaked from its face.
Okay, only one of them.
Only one giant, alien spider.
Not great, but workable, maybe.
I started looking around for a stick.
Anything.
I heard more of the shuffling, clicking sounds.
Did you ever see that old vid, with the puppets? Dark Crystal?
My grandmother had loved that thing. Watched it whenever my parents sent me for a stay.
Or, she knew I’d sit still for two hours, entranced.
Either way, something about the gortham from that movie had always freaked me the fuck out.
Around the pod, coming around both edges were more of the spider things. They didn’t really look like gortham, even though they made the same kind of rattling, shuffling noise that had terrified me as a kidlet.
These had longer legs, with red stripes along their backs and undersides.
The legs had spiny thorns along the lengths. The mandibles worked as they got closer.
Their faces were a mass of eyes and split by a nasty maw where the clear fluid leaked out.
And there were far too many of them.
They were closing in on me, surrounding me. They weren’t scared of me and my stick at all.
“Go on, get back!” I shouted.
One of them stopped and reared, just like an aggressive wolf spider. I stopped and looked at it, frozen and horrified.
A thin strand of the clear goo shot at me.
I expected it to be sticky, like a web, and he’d try to wrap me up. Instead it splattered along my arm.
My jumpsuit started hissing and smoking. It was eating away at the fabric! Acid! Shit!
I started stumbling backwards, but the other spiders kept closing in, shooting more of the sticky, burning glue.
I staggered left and right, trying to avoid the poison, but some still got on me. My uniform was hissing and melting in about four different places. The fabric didn’t protect me, not a bit. Instead it seemed to make everything worse, soaking in the burning goo, spreading it further on my skin.
The things surrounded me in a circle. At least they weren’t charging in and chewing on me.
And, maybe that was the experiment—getting chewed to death by giant alien spiders or melted by their acid spit?
I finally pulled off my scorched coveralls, but they were still closing in and shooting. I tried to avoid the hits, but they pushed me to the center of the circle and kept shooting glue. It was getting all over me, on my arms and body and hair. It dripped down my legs.
Crappy, crappy experiment design, guys.
Your subject shouldn’t die in the first hour.
I’m really sure about that.
One of the spiders lunged again.
“Fuck you!” I punched towards it’s clicking mandibles.
Screw this. I was dead. May as well fight.
But then suddenly a roaring sound surrounded me.
Great. I was going to get eaten by something even bigger.
Some of the spider things turned to the sound and they went flying out of the circle.
Others turned around as well and started shrieking as they got broken and thrown around.
I couldn’t believe my eyes.
Maybe the acid didn’t just burn but was some kind of hallucinogen.
There were three massive guys just laying into the spider things.
Tall, well-muscled, good looking guys.
Maybe the experiment wasn’t so awful.
Maybe that’s what the tracker was for, to figure out when to send in the rescue team.
Except…
As they got closer to me, swinging around the circle and utterly smashing the spider things, I saw they weren’t quite like ordinary men.
Their skin was darkly tanned, and they had gorgeous, almost inhuman bodies.
The hair on all of them was sandy, with dark patches, in different patterns on each one. The faces were sharp featured and beautiful, but I really couldn’t pick up the details as they whirled around me pulverizing spiders.
It looked like cheetah spots—some kind of tattoo? A mark of rank or something?
Their tightly muscled torsos, complemented by huge arms and massive chests were apparent even under their tunics.
Their reflexes were instant, almost too fast for me to watch as they spun and whirled, motions precise, as if they’d done this a dozen times before. Or a thousand.
As they lunged at the creepy insects, I spotted how each of their tunic style shirts had a different set of details: one of them had a red insignia, while the other two had black ones. Did the red identify the one as the leader?
I had so many questions that needed answering.
They chased off the last of the spider things. We were surrounded by broken limbs, crushed bodies and lots of the awful goo.
“Help me, please help me. I need to get this stuff off—”
They surrounded me, looking at each other anxiously. The stuff was starting to burn. My skin was reddening.
To my utter astonishment they leaned in, putting their faces very close to my body. One grabbed a leg by the ankle. Another my arm. The last one put his hand on my back and pulled me towards his face.
“Guys? Hello? What the fuck?”
I was even more amazed when they leaned in further and…started licking me.
Okay, gross, weird, time out.
But I didn’t stop them. Because their tongues were weirdly rough and textured. Almost like what Nana’s cat had felt like.
And the sticky, acid spider goo?
The stuff just came right off. It didn’t seem to hurt the guys in the slightest.
Not only did stuff come right off, their tongues soothed my skin. I started to relax and just let them do it. They lifted my limbs gently, moving around my body licking me very carefully and thoroughly.
Rough tongues swept my thighs and calves. A gentle soft hand pulled a knee toward him to run lips and tongue down my shin and across my foot. One lifted my arm delicately, running his tongue along the underside.
He paused on the lump where the tracker was, mouthing it softly and coating it with saliva.
In spite of all the weirdness, I was touched by that small act. He thought I might be hurt and tried to make it better.
The tallest one with the fairest hair was right in front of me, pulling my waist gently towards him as he licked over my chest and neck. He had a firm, warrior-like stance. Demanding. Uncompromising.
His tongue felt amazing across the sensitive skin under my neck.
He swept down between my breasts, lapping up goo that still trickled down from my shoulders. He moved across my breasts, cupping each one as he carefully licked them clean.
I started to squirm a little, feeling hot in spite of myself. He did seem to be lingering on the nipples a bit.
Still, I wanted the goo off, didn’t I?
Maybe aliens didn’t like breasts.
What the fuck do I know?
Maybe he thought it was gross. I could be just projecting my values on to him.
Maybe I’d hit my head when the pod landed, and none of this was real.
