Because while it may seem like an obvious success months now after the launch, when we first started talking about writing these books: by women, for women, focusing on challenges in the middle of life and writing stories that reflected the good, the bad, and the ugly chin hairs of paranormal, it felt really risky!
Would readers want main characters who didn’t have perky boobs and baby faces? Would they hang with heroines who didn’t have romance at the front of their minds?
With three books finished in this genre and another three book series planned, I am thrilled to say that YES. Readers were game for all that. They were game for wise-cracking women who didn’t take life too seriously. They were game for heroines who didn’t ask permission, but maybe needed to take the stairs a little slower. They were eager for friendship and loyalty, and if romance came along, that was fun too.
The success of this genre belongs to you. There are other authors now exploring this rich, funny, and refreshing part of women’s lives. There are younger authors who are seeing that yes, women don’t become irrelevant or stop wanting magic when the wrinkles show up.
In time, the magic just becomes more powerful.
I hope this genre continues to expand and encompass many more stories of friendship, fantasy, and family. I am so very grateful that I get to be a part of it.
