“I have it on good authority some brilliant scientists have been trapped in long meetings here.”
Oriana smiled.
“You haven’t replied to my request.”
Oriana began walking. “Maybe I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.”
“I really don’t see you passing on an opportunity like this,” Sean said, walking beside her.
“Oh yes, the opportunity to interpret complex problems for others, not to mention the added bonus of a very cramped living space that I would have to share with somebody else. I’m just not sure another tour of duty on a military vessel is something I want to partake in at the moment.”
“You forgot the great company and the feeling of contributing to a cause that’s greater than yourself. And your living quarters would be negotiable. As a departmental head, you’d be entitled to the same quarters the officers have, as well as the privileges of elevated rank,” Sean said.
Oriana pursed her lips in thought. “You want me to lead the science team in your task force?”
“I do.”
“But Dr. Volker—”
“Is unqualified for this mission,” Sean finished for her. “You don’t have to decide anything right now. No one should hurry to make decisions like these, especially on an empty stomach. And being trapped inside all day isn’t good for the brain.”
Oriana smiled at him, and Sean felt the heat gather in his chest. He’d meant what he said. He wanted her on his team, and he was more than curious to see where things might lead from there.

He crossed the threshold of his front door and felt the crisp morning air on his face. As he walked off the beaten path through the small city, his combat boots marked the ground with a distinct footprint. The boots he wore were familiar and comfortable, and his blue uniform had golden eagles at the collar and along his shoulders. As he walked, he was greeted by the friendly waves of people who lived in the city.
An old friend came to his side and walked quietly next to him as they entered the CDF base. Soldiers saluted him when he walked by, heading to the briefing room where an active holoscreen with a live video feed to Nathan Hayes’ office was prominent. There were also CDF soldiers in the briefing room, who stood up when he entered. A wave of quiet swept over the room as every soldier present gave him a salute, which was quickly followed by the soldiers on the holoscreen.
Nathan gave him a nod.
“General Gates, good morning. Welcome back.”

About the Author
Ken Lozito is the author of multiple science fiction and fantasy series. I’ve been reading both genres for a long time. Books were my way to escape everyday life from when I was a teenager to my current ripe old(?) age. What started out as a love of stories has turned into a full-blown passion for writing them. My ultimate goal for writing stories is to provide fun escapism for readers. I write stories that I would like to read and I hope you enjoy them as well.
If you have questions or comments about any of my works I would love to hear from you, even if its only to drop by to say hello at KenLozito.com
