While searching in the Yucatán Peninsula for the meteor that killed the dinosaurs, geophysicist Jack Greer and a team of scientists stumble upon an alien spaceship, millions of years old. Once onboard, they discover the ship crash-landed on Earth 65 million years ago, killing 70% of life on the planet. More startling still, the aliens behind the devastation then proceeded to seed Earth with new life. One of those ancient life forms would eventually lead to Homo sapiens.
At the same time, a geneticist named Mia Ward receives a package from her murdered boss claiming the appearance of a strange new chromosome called Salzburg syndrome may not have an earthly origin. Mysteriously, pulses of light emanating from the alien ship in the Gulf of Mexico appear to be adding harmful genes to the Salzburg chromosome. With her own daughter suffering from its terrible effects, Mia is determined to stop it.
Meanwhile back in the Gulf, when a secretive anti-alien group called Sentinel learns of the ship’s discovery, they dispatch a group of agents to extract whatever extraterrestrial technology they can and destroy what’s left. A battle ensues on board with Jack, Mia and most of the others narrowly escaping with their lives.
Things go from bad to worse when NASA discovers another diamond-shaped alien craft hurtling toward Earth. And when new blast waves beginning emanating from beneath Greenland’s ice sheet, it becomes clear there may be a second ship.
To that end, Jack and the others are dispatched to the site, only to discover the enemy has gotten there first. When they descend beneath Greenland’s ice sheet, they discover a lost city millions of years old. DNA analysis on ancient bones soon reveals the beings who lived there long ago were genetically related to modern dolphins. They push through the complex of frozen ruins, aware they’re in a race against time to reach the ancient city’s secrets before the enemy does.
Soon it becomes clear—the creatures that lived here once possessed a thriving, technologically advanced civilization, but it was destroyed by the same cataclysm that killed the dinosaurs. Understanding begins to crystalize in their minds that each of the major extinctions throughout Earth’s geological history was likely tied to the impact of one of these alien ships. But many questions remain. Chiefly among them, why is an alien civilization repeatedly destroying life on Earth? And is there a way to stop the cycle?
Back in America, a young reporter named Kay Mahoro learns of a conspiracy to kill President Taylor. Crumb by crumb, her source leads her down a maze of intrigue that eventually points the finger at the president’s own cabinet.
Kay’s work exposes the Cabinet and leads to their arrest. Soon, however, she discovers that Sentinel was behind the whole thing and used her to clear a path to the White House.
Still on the run from Sentinel agents, Mia continues to unravel the mystery of Salzburg. With 30% of the population affected, societies across the globe begin to crumble. A host of discoveries, however, begin to shed new light on this mysterious illness. While the genes in the first part of the chromosome were incredibly harmful, new genes offer some benefits, such as increased bone mass, strength, intelligence, and healing. But perhaps Mia’s most unusual find is a pair of twins in Rome, each with a copy of the final and most mysterious gene in the Salzburg puzzle. Called HOK3, it appears to enable telepathic communication. Mia’s final discovery comes when Sentinel agents corner her and she learns the head of the nefarious organization is really her old boss, whom she thought was dead—Alan Salzburg.
Beneath Greenland’s ice sheet, Jack and the others at last reach the source of the blast waves. But instead of finding a ship, they uncover what looks like a portal. Uncovering who put it there and where it might lead is where book 3 begins…
