Z Chronicles (Book 4): The Final Chapter

Lori nodded and helped up Virginia. “Walter?”
“He’s been sedated and loaded into the truck, much to the unhappiness of the other passengers.”
“Other passengers?”
“Yeah, a big fella who calls himself Todd and one of the biggest damn dogs I’ve ever seen.”
“Is a lady named Tressa or Zoe with them?” Jermaine asked.
“Sorry, sir, just the man and dog.”
The old loading dock was from when the building had first been built. In later years, the company that used this place as a distribution center built the larger multiple door docks father over on the far end of the building. No one knew about this way in, and, if they did, it wouldn’t be thought of until too late. The Chevy Suburban sat in the dock with its motor running.
Lori and Charlie helped Virginia down the stairs then into the truck.
Jermaine found Pippa sitting in the driver seat and unleashed his fury on her. In his mind, she had been a spy sent among them to make their capture easy.
“I’d like to travel with you guys, if that’s okay?” Pippa asked.
Jermaine snapped his head toward Lori and Charlie.
Charlie shrugged. “Couldn’t hurt, could it? She’s also helping Virginia break out of jail.”
Jermaine laughed the first full laugh he had had since before the zombie apocalypse.
Lori and Charlie gave him a hug, removed Perseus’ leash and petted the lads for the last time. They watched the truck drive through the old gate in the cyclone fence topped with razor wire. Lori wondered if she would ever see Virginia or the lads again. The answer was clear, but she knew there was always hope, hope that one day they would live in a world that would allow them to meet again.
