  AUTHOR’S NOTE

I’ll tell you this for free: I could get to like this writing thing. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of finishing a book, and the dread that comes with knowing you will spend the next month (or six) editing and rewriting it, the anticipation of starting the next book as soon as you are finished with the drudgery of rewriting.

I write to entertain myself (and because I must), and, hopefully, to entertain you. I try not to follow current events because they make me sick. This isn’t hyperbole, my illness takes stress and converts it into inflammation and pain. I discovered a couple of years ago that ignoring the news, the politics, all those things that we have no power to change or control, makes me feel better in a quantifiable way and has zero impact on my life. So there you go. But I can’t help knowing some things that go on, and as I was writing Demon King, a certain gentleman who shall remain nameless (he deserves no publicity, no fame, not even infamy—he deserves to be forgotten) decided that shooting into a crowd of concert-goers would fix his problems. Owen Gray’s exploits in this book are purely coincidental, and I hope I’ve portrayed him as a weak-minded coward, which is what I believe these spree shooters are. Like Matt Greshin, I have no idea how to stop these individuals—if I did, I would be doing it. Now, I’m going to stop talking about this before my spleen (or left elbow) swells to the size of Connecticut.

Demon King was fun to write. I wrote it in two distinct chunks: the events of 1979 and the events of 2007. It was very interesting to see how the story changed with the passage of time (both in the story and in real life). While writing this novel, I wrote a blog post titled: How long have you been planning this?!?, that was about stories sneaking up on authors and doing something that isn’t expected. I wrote it after the story killed both Craig Witherson and Jim Cartwright in a couple of days. I had plans for both characters, thank you very much, but Mr. Story didn’t care. Not a bit.

If you are a Stephen King fan, you may have noticed an Easter egg or two. I hope you enjoyed them.

Here’s another freebie: I wrote this book when I should have been writing the next book in the Blood of the Isir saga. In my defense, Toby had a hold on my forebrain, and he wouldn’t let go. Everything I saw, everywhere we went, fit into Demon King as if they were meant for it. Sometimes you have to listen to that little voice, and sometimes you have no choice in the matter. I hope you will forgive me this brief detour from Hank Jensen’s story.

The next thing I’m writing is titled Rooms of Ruin, and its book two of the Blood of the Isir. I’ve already started it, and it’s as comfortable as putting on my favorite T-shirt. I have a feeling that the pages will fly by as the story unfolds before my eyes.
