  Chapter Eight

Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end.

  -Robin Sharma

“Ms. Key, I promise that was not my intention. I was just trying to be the best assistant I could be,” Becky told Honey, as they stood in Congo’s office.

“Well, you no longer have that worry since as of today you are fired.”

Becky’s face turned red as she frowned at Honey. “I believe that is left up to Mr. Jaquel.”

Honey smiled at her because she had no idea who she was talking to. With her hands on her hips, she turned around to where Congo was standing in his construction clothes and looked at him.

  “Babe?”

He sighed and looked at Becky. “You got to go, Becky.”

  “Because of your jealous wife?”

“No, not because of my jealous wife. Because you are unprofessional.”

Becky looked on the verge of exploding, but she snatched her purse and left the room instead. Congo and Honey watched her storm down the hall to the elevators before looking at each other.

“Why you make me do that?” Congo asked.

“Because it needed to be done. You were being too naïve and I wasn’t about to let her steal what I’ve worked for.”

Congo smirked. “What you worked for?”

“You.” Honey walked over to where he was standing. “See, you don’t be thinking. I know how women are. She was going to sashay around you doing little slick stuff until you fell for her advances. I could see it coming. I know her type.”

Honey’s little rant was sexy and amusing to Congo. “What’s her type?”

“She’s had everything given to her, and she wants to continue to get it. Had she met you a few months ago when you ain’t have nothing to give her, she wouldn’t have looked at you two times. She got around here and listens to how highly everyone speaks of you and saw you as a cash cow. She didn’t want your black butt. She just wanted what you could do for her. I wasn’t about to be the baby mama that’s been there since you was down and as soon as you make it, you drop me for a white woman like I ain’t did nothing for you.”

Congo pulled Honey on his lap. “You really think I would do that?”

“I don’t know. I’m sure nobody ever expects y’all niggas to do it until you do it.”

“Let me tell you this so we don’t ever have to do this again. I’m never leaving you. We’ve worked from the bottom together. Starved, fought, struggled, everything we’ve got now, we built it together. I would never forget that. I especially wouldn’t disrespect you by leaving you for a white woman. That ain’t me. We’re finally out of the trenches and we’re winning. We got so much more to do, and I don’t want to do it with nobody else but you. Never think I would leave you for one of these random bitches. We made it, Honey love. Congo and muthafucking Honey. We did it, bae.”

Honey smiled at his words. He was right. “We made it?”

He kissed her lips. “We made it.”

  Two years later…

The sun was shining bright as Honey and Arizona sat on the park bench watching Blaze and Deuce play in the park. It had been a long work week for them both, and they were more than happy just chilling with each other and their kids.

“Girl, guess who rang up my stuff the other day when I went in Walmart.” Arizona tapped Honey’s leg.

  “Who?”

  “Neeka.”

Honey stopped rubbing her protruding belly and looked at Arizona. “What she doing in there?”

  “She work there, bitch, duh.”

“That’s good for her. Running around here telling people business like that mess ain’t against the law. I’m so glad you told me about HIPAA. I would have never thought to get her fired from her lil ultrasound job.”

Arizona laughed. “I swear as soon as I saw her I started to say something about it, but I ain’t want to fight in Walmart. Plus, Zay be acting crazy when I show out in public.”

“He needs to act crazy. You just be showing out too bad sometimes. I see how you and Virginia are related. You act just like her.”

Arizona waved her hand dismissively. “Girl, whatever. I ain’t nothing like that lil jailbird hoe.”

Honey turned some on the bench so that she was facing Arizona. “They still ain’t gave her no court date?”

“Nope. She just sitting her dumb ass in the county. She ain’t have no business stabbing that damn girl. I mean I don’t like Keyona or no shit like that, but I wouldn’t have even tried to kill the girl.”

Honey nodded. “Yeah, you right. That was messed up. I’m glad that baby all right, though. Even if she ain’t my lil adopted niece.”

“I know right. I was kind of hoping to have a lil step-daughter or something.”

The girls fell over in laughter.

“Man, I still can’t get over that shit. That bitch ruined my happy home and her ass wasn’t even pregnant by Toro. I knew it was something fishy about it the whole time.”

“I did, too. Toro was the only one that didn’t. That nigga had you going through all that mental stress about not being able to have kids when it was his tail all along. That’s still unbelievable to me.”

Arizona looked out at Deuce as he slid down the slide with Blaze. “I just look at it as God saving me from myself. Had she never said she was pregnant, I probably would have taken him back. Then I would have never known the happiness that I have now. I swear. Toro and I had some good times, but it ain’t nothing like what I have with my Zay. That nigga there is just everything with a little bit more happiness on the side. I have my baby. I have my husband. I just have everything I ever prayed for and probably never would have gotten it had I stayed with Toro.”

“I just love how happy you are, Z.” Honey smiled at her.

“Me? Girl how happy we are. I thought I’d never see the day my boy Congo fell in love.” Arizona laughed. “I still remember the look on that nigga’s face when me and Toro picked him up from the jailhouse and he was telling us about you. It’s crazy because I knew then that you were going to be his one. Now ask me did I know y’all would be running y’all own construction and architecture company two years ago when y’all was living with that nigga’s parents, I would tell you hell no! But it makes me so happy to see y’all winning. Y’all was down for so long and could have given up, but y’all didn’t. Y’all made it, boo. I’m so happy for us.”

Arizona leaned over and hugged Honey’s neck and rubbed her stomach. “And I can’t forget about Auntie babies. That Blaze and Lil Congo got me so in love.”

“Girl, like Deuce got me. I don’t know why you don’t have another one.”

“Zay keeps asking, so we probably will soon, just not now. We’re still newlyweds, girl. I want to enjoy it for a minute. He already got his junior, so he better chill for a minute.”

“I feel you on that. I keep trying to tell Congo let’s wait to have a wedding, but he insists on this destination mess, so I guess I’ll be flying to Jamaica soon.”

“I guess we will. You know me and Zay going, too.”

  “Oh Lord, poor Toro.”

Arizona sucked her teeth. “Ain’t no poor Toro. He did this to himself. Had he just acted right, we would still be together and he wouldn’t be over there in that house by himself every day.”

“He be looking so sad anytime he sees Deuce or I say something about you.”

“Oh well. His business, not mine.”

Honey shook her head at Arizona. She was rude about it, but she was right. “Hold on let me see what Congo want.”

Honey answered her phone. “Hey, babe.”

  “Hey. What you doing?”

“At the park with Z and the kids. You okay?”

“Yeah, I’m straight. Just had a quick break, and I thought about you. We dun came a long way, Honey love.”

“I know, bae, and we have a longer way to go.”

He chuckled. “You got that right. We riding until the end?

“Riding until the end, babe. I love you.”

  “Love you, too.”
