In the normal course of events, George Washington would have become an Oxford don, following in the footsteps of his English ancestors. Washington – a descendant of King Edward III through his paternal grandmother - was robbed of a university education by a revolution in England a century before he was born. Had there been no English Civil War in the 1640s, his family would never have left England.
