This is a story of a man who imagined at nearly every turn in his life his ultimate death. And so, in a sense, this is everyman's story. We all fear death and its lack of predictability, death and the darkness beyond. In a sense, the lowly mayfly represents this fear in the extreme. Some species live but a single night after emergence into the adult form (imago). Nocturne highlights our transience, as well as our prime directive: to find a mate and propagate. But if you think that these are the imaginings of a man fearing death, read closer; the real story here is what drives the Man’s obsession with such a morbid subject: his son.
