This new concoction was ‘held in the highest esteem by the Quality and Gentry of France who constantly carry it in their pockets a smelling bottle…it recovers immediately from either fainting or hysteric fits, and is a most admirable remedy in the head ache, lowness of spirits, hypochondriacal, and nervous disorders’. No doubt Montcalm’s officers had vials of the liquid about their persons at all times.
