Jordane's Hunger

Kiki touched her heart. “It seems there is a lot I don’t know about her.”

“Not even her family knows her full story.”

  “Will you tell us?”

Hannah ran her hand along Carina’s cheek. “Maybe someday when you are ready for the truth.” She pulled her hand away. “I must see my little dove.”

  Kiki smiled. “You mean Valen.”

“Ah yes. You look at Valen and see the prince. The king. I see the beautiful little boy who changed Carina’s mind.”

  “About what?”

“A girl doesn’t grow up wanting to sacrifice her life. Something makes her believe that another’s life is worth more than her own. Excuse me.” Hannah walked out.

“I can’t imagine that kind of love. That kind of sacrifice,” Kiki said.

Jordane kissed her hand. “When I look at you, I can.”

Kiki glanced at the Carina portrait. “She inspired an entire generation under a single cause and she didn’t ask them. She just loved them more than anything else.”

He kissed her cheek. “We will not let her down. We will protect our children and hers.”

Kiki looked up at him. “I didn’t believe in this kind of love. You make me a better person. Someone who is whole. Safe. I never thought I wanted children. Now I can’t wait to see what she looks like.” She touched his cheek. “I hope she has your eyes.”

“Valen did not say it was a girl, it may be too soon to tell but either way our child will be as beautiful as you. With your strength. Your heart.”

“I want to name her Ariel”

“Why? You never met him.” Jordane said.

“You loved him. He was important to you. We will honor his sacrifice every time we look at our baby. When you look at her face it will remind you only of his love for you.” She kissed him, letting her love pour through their bond.

He held her face in his hands. “Your words are as beautiful as you are. Your compassion and love an inconceivable gift I will never take for granted. Thank you for being mine.”

She kissed him. He gave her something she hadn’t believed in. He gave her hope. Family. A future. Life was a miracle she believed in.
