  “Well, would it make it better if I said I’m nervous, too?” Coco leaned against one of the dining chairs and glanced over her shoulder at where Silas had Paxton in a headlock.

  They both watched the two men for a moment. Paxton picked Silas up, but that only resulted in the two falling onto the sofa.

  “They’re children,” Ekko muttered.

  “Such children,” Coco agreed.

  “What are we doing with them?”

  “Well, I’m marrying that one.”

  Ekko wrinkled her nose. “Good call. He’s kind of good.”

  “Silas isn’t bad either.”

  “I know.” She smiled.

  “I want us to be friends,” Coco blurted.

  They looked at each other for a moment and Ekko knew everything was going to be just fine.

  “Me, too,” she said.

  SILAS SAT ON THE patio sofa with his legs propped on the matching ottoman. Paxton plopped down next to him and offered him the other beer.

  Coco and Ekko were still at the dining table more than an hour after they’d cleared everything away and washed the dishes. It had been one hell of an awkward meeting. Downright painful to watch, but now the two girls were past that. Way past that if what Silas had heard on his last pass through the kitchen that had gotten him kicked out.

  Paxton held up his beer and they clinked before taking a drink.

  Ekko tossed her head back and laughed loudly while Coco snickered.

  Funny, Silas had never seen either like this.

  “What’s a bridal bouncer?” Paxton asked.

  “Hell if I know.”

  “I think that’s what Ekko is now.” He frowned. “I guess you’re both in the wedding.”

  Silas shook his head. He’d had a good feeling about getting these two together.

  It was all coming together.

  Without warning Paxton nailed Silas in the ribs. He grunted and took the blow.

  They’d done two jobs back to back as soon as Silas was back on duty. They’d been fairly easy ones, but Silas was still having to work off some of the weight he’d gained while staying here with Ekko. The woman could cook.

  “How’s the old man?” Paxton asked.

  Chayan.

  “Good. He’s settled in. Still going under his real name. Has some people after him to write a book.” Silas sipped his beer. “Pasley?”

  Paxton held up a finger. “Patrick.”

  “Shit.” Silas grimaced. “Right. Patrick?”

  “He does his job very seriously.”

  “Serious coming from you?” Silas’ brows rose.

  Paxton merely nodded.

  Pasley had cooperated with the government in every possible way, and while people were deciding what to do with him, Zain had helped the man disappear for a while. Pasley—Patrick—wasn’t an innocent, but he wasn’t exactly guilty, either. For now he had a new life and protection against anyone still holding a grudge.

  The Daurian revolution was at a stalemate. The president had been assassinated. Half the country had liberated itself, while the rest was still under military control. Silas thought that the military order would collapse after a while. There was too much outside pressure, not to mention there was no going back to the way things had been.

  Dauria would be free. Someday. In the near future.

  Because one woman had a crazy idea.

  Silas shook his head. Life was strange.

  “Mom on you about meeting her yet?” Paxton asked.

  “Yes.” Silas sighed. “I’m not sure it’s going to work out for a month or two, and then what’s the point of going down for a short trip when we could just do the summer vacation?”

  Paxton’s brows rose. “Bringing her on the old summer trip, huh?”

  “Why not?”

  “Kind of says a lot, doesn’t it?”

  Silas merely shrugged.

  He was going to marry Ekko. Not this year and probably not next year. Now that they’d settled into their relationship, she wanted time. And he wasn’t opposed to enjoying every minute of it. This time he wasn’t making a mistake. She was the real deal. Besides, Paxton and Coco deserved to have the limelight and all the family pressure on them.

  Ekko sputtered a laugh and Coco swayed into her. The two women bent over, almost in each other’s laps as they laughed.

  In that moment Silas was at peace. Utterly and completely.

  This was where he was meant to be, with these people, living this life. And it was perfect because of a woman who had taken him by surprise.
