My older brother’s best friend is a rock star.
No, that’s putting it lightly.
My older brother’s best friend is Tyler King—the hottest rock star in the country right now. And I can’t stop listening to his music.
I raise the volume on my phone as the sweet and emotive rock songs of Tyler King flood my ears.
And I sigh. Over and over again.
I’ve always loved Tyler. He used to sing to me when I was a kid. There’s a ten-year age gap between us, and it’s been a few years since I’ve last seen him. Now I’m 19 and hoping that the next time Tyler comes back to town he’ll profess his love to me and make me the wife of a rock star.
But that’s never going to happen. Because I’m certain that I am not his type at all.
Too thick, too curvy, too dark haired.
As I scroll through pictures of Tyler on Google images, every photo of him with a woman on his arm is of a stick thin blonde type. I am out of luck.
A knock at my door startles me out of my Tyler King reverie.
“Delilah, can I come in?” My older brother Noah asks.
I sigh and get up to unlock my door. I open it and glare at him for a moment. I’ve never really gotten along with Noah. It probably stems from when I was little, and he was a moody teenager who never let me hang out with him.
“What do you want?” I ask as I pull my earbuds out.
“You haven’t seen me in six months, and now that I’m home you’re not talking to me, huh? You've been hiding in your room since I got back yesterday.”
“Yes, I have. I’m happy here. Now please go.”
“You’re going to want to hear this, I have a feeling. I got you something for Christmas this year.”
“What?”
This is a first. Noah never gets me anything for birthdays or Christmas.
“Your boyfriend Tyler King is in town tomorrow doing a Christmas Eve concert. He gave me two VIP tickets, and one of them is yours, because I can’t find any single women who are alone on Christmas—other than you, of course.”
I want to scream for joy and tell Noah that of course I will come with him, but I control myself. He knows how much I love Tyler, and he’s always made fun of me for it. He also assured me that Tyler has never shown the slightest interest in me, so yeah—it’s never gonna happen. Noah loves to rub that in.
“Since you’ve asked me so nicely, I suppose I should say yes.”
“Come on. You can be more excited than that.”
Then Noah pushes his way past me and sits down on my bed. He points and laughs at the Tyler King posters on the wall.
“Jesus, Delilah. I haven’t been in this room in a while. It looks like a shrine to my best friend. That’s hilarious.”
“I’m glad you find it funny.”
“Anyway, are you coming with me or what?”
“Mom made you ask me, didn’t she?”
“I can’t believe you’d think such a thing—I’m doing this because I love my little sister.”
I stare at his mouth and watch for the smirk that says he’s lying. It arrives soon enough. Noah is a horrible liar.
“I’ll come with. Just don’t make fun of me in front of Tyler, ok?”
“I promise. I’ve been thinking lately that I haven’t been the best brother in the world. But I’m going to try harder from now on.”
“We’ll see,” I reply. “But thank you for the concert ticket. Now please let me get back to my music.”
“Do you ever do anything else?” He asks.
“Shut up, Noah.”
“What are you majoring in at school, anyway?”
“Journalism. You really don’t pay attention to my life when you’re here.”
“Like I said, I’m gonna try.”
He gets off my bed and leaves the room without another word, which is a relief to me, because I’m sure if he had said something it would have been another jerk comment about my life.
I lock my door again, cup my hand over my mouth, and allow myself a silent scream of joy. I’m going to see Tyler tomorrow.
I tear up my closet in search of something to wear. I settle on jeans and a plain blue sweater that’s tight enough to show off my breasts. I don’t want to look like I’m trying too hard. I’m sure Noah won’t let Tyler spend much time on me, anyway. I’m sure Tyler doesn’t have the time either.
But tonight, I’ll lie here and dream about the life I could have with Tyler—if he had only discovered me in a crowd and fallen instantly in love with me. But reality is that he’s my brother’s best friend, and that means I'll always be the annoying little sister...

“Noah, man, it’s good to see you.”
I pull Noah in for a hug which he quickly pulls away from. Best friend or not, Noah’s not into hugging guys.
“Tyler King. The Tyler King. You’re famous, but your music still sucks.”
“That’s because my drummer quit to go to College and never accepted my offer to return afterwards.”
“I’m a terrible drummer, Ty, and you know it.”
“At least you can admit your flaws,” I reply.
“Yeah, well, if I had rejoined your band, I can promise you that your music would suck even more. But none of that matters, because you’re gonna hook me up with some of those girls that follow you everywhere, aren’t you?”
We take a seat on the couch in my hotel room. I’ve sent everyone else away, because I knew my best friend was coming to visit.
“The girls that follow me around. You don’t pay attention, do you? Those girls are mostly way too young for us. You usually end up sleeping with one of their mothers.”
“Yeah, well, their moms are sometimes hot. Anyway, my sister has become a Tyler King fanatic. It’s annoying. I’m bringing her tonight. I hope you don’t mind.”
“That’s what this concert is for. Just family, close friends, contest winners. And a few million people watching on VR headsets.”
“VR Headsets? That’s nuts.”
“Yeah, I never thought I’d play a concert for people watching in Virtual Reality. But how is your sister doing? She must have graduated high school by now?”
“She’s going to UIC for Journalism. And living at home to save money.”
“She always was a smart girl,” I reply.
“Well, tonight we’ll f
ind a way to ditch Delilah, and hook up with some of your older fans.”
“Some days it feels like I don’t have any older fans, but sure, we’ll try,” I reply with a chuckle.
Noah and I hang out and catch up. But then I have to kick him out and get ready for tonight’s show.
BACKSTAGE AT THE ARAGON ballroom, my manager brings the VIP ticket holders in for the before show meet and greet. As it usually is, it’s an army of teenage girls and their often very unhappy looking parents or boyfriends.
I sign autographs and take selfies with what feels like an endless number of fans. We kept the VIP guests to one hundred this time, because I didn’t want it to get out of hand. But once the VIP fans are ushered back out of the backstage area, I notice a young woman who hasn’t left yet. She’s just leaning against a wall and looking like she’s waiting for someone. She looks so familiar to me, but I can’t place her.
The one thing I know for sure is that she’s beautiful. She’s wearing jeans and a blue sweater that’s tight enough to show off her breasts. Her long wavy brown hair is draped over the front of her right shoulder. She catches me staring at her and looks away.
I go to her, and I notice her body begins to shake. Must be nerves.
“Oh my God, Tyler, please,” she whispers.
“Delilah?” I ask as it suddenly hits me. “Holy shit, Delilah. Give me a hug. It’s been at least seven years!” I exclaim.
She looks up and smiles as she rises to wrap her arms around my neck. She kisses me on the cheek. I wrap my arms around her soft curvy body and pull her in tighter. Delilah has grown up alright, and now I’m not sure how I’m gonna be able to go out and play. I’ll be thinking of her the whole time.
“It’s good to see you,” she whispers. “I’m just nervous, I guess, so please don’t tell my brother.”
“Of course not, sweetheart.”
Noah clears his throat. “Ok, you two. I go to take a piss, come back, and find Tyler King and my little sister wrapped in each other’s arms. I don’t think I’m gonna be able to sleep ever again.”
Delilah pulls away and I shake Noah’s hand. But I’m secretly mad at him for ruining the moment. I could have held Delilah for hours.
“The show is gonna start soon, right?” Delilah asks. “We’d better go find a spot. It was nice seeing you again, Tyler, even if for only a moment.”
“You act like you’re not going to hang out with me after the show,” I reply.
“She’s not, man. I’m sending her home in an Uber so we can party. She might be nineteen, but there are some things she doesn’t need to see her older brother do.”
“That’s crazy. Of course, she’s hanging out with us after the show. I insist.”
Noah mutters under his breath, “Great.”
“I don’t want to get in your way, guys. I’ll just go home. It’s better that way. Noah’s right.”
“No, he’s not. You’re staying, ok? I’m putting my foot down. You wouldn’t want to hurt my feelings by leaving, would you?”
“No...,” she whispers.
“Good. It’s settled. I’ll see you both after the show.”
I DO A SET OF CHRISTMAS songs and then halfway through the show I just can’t stop thinking about Delilah. I want to be close to her again. I know she’s somewhere in the front, but the stage lights make it hard to spot her in the VIP crowd.
I get so distracted by thoughts of Delilah that I screw up Silent Night. I forget the words halfway through. That’s bad.
I set my guitar down and grab the mic.
“Is everyone having a good time out there tonight?”
The audience screams. Some guy shouts “I love you Tyler King. Marry me!”
“Marry you? Oh, no, I can’t do that. I’m saving myself for a very special woman someday. I’m not with her yet, but I will be someday. So, I have to stay unmarried until then. Sorry.”
Everyone laughs.
“I’m gonna play a solo song for you now. Something a little less Christmas, but very sweet, nonetheless. But I have a request to make. My friend Delilah Rogers is in the audience tonight. Delilah, where are you?”
The crowd is silent as we wait for Delilah’s response. Then her soft voice rises to break the silence.
“I’m right here,” she says.
“I want you to come on stage with me, Delilah. I’m gonna sing to you like I used to a long time ago.”
There are oohs and ahhhs rising in waves from the audience. My stage manager helps Delilah up, and the crowd loses their minds. They scream so loud I feel like my ear drums are gonna burst. This is not the biggest crowd I’ve ever played for—not by a long shot. But they are enthusiastic and very loud.
Delilah is shaking again. This time even more then when I saw her standing backstage.
“No need to be nervous, sweetie. I’m just gonna sing Beautiful Bliss to you,” I whisper in her ear.
I put the mic back on the stand and grab my guitar. I fix my gaze on the sweet angel next to me as I play my Grammy winning love song to her. And tonight, playing this song for her, it feels like Delilah and I are meeting for the first time. And it feels like falling in love is the order of the night...

As I’m escorted offstage after Tyler sang Beautiful Bliss to me, I am shaking and need to lean on his manager for help climbing down the stairs. I can hardly believe it was real.
When I take my place next to Noah, he whispers in my ear: “I bet that gave you a lady boner, huh?”
I reply in a low voice: “You’re so rude.”
“Whatever. You’re my little sister. It’s my job to tease you,” he says. “I put Tyler up to that anyway, so you can thank me later.”
I’m pretty sure that my brother is lying, but now he’s planted a little seed of doubt in my mind to crush my emotional high just a little. Even if he did put Tyler up to the whole thing, it was still special to me.
When the show ends, we make our way through the crowd and head for the backstage area. But on our way, it seems everyone wants to talk to me. People grab me and shout “What was it like having him sing to you like that?” Someone yells, “I can’t believe he’d pick a girl like you.”
Noah plays the role of the good brother and pulls me out of harm’s way. When we get to the stage manager, he recognizes us immediately and leads us backstage.
Tyler’s band are having a beer on the couch. Several very thin and pretty model types are hanging on the guys. It makes me feel self-conscious. I can’t compete with girls like that. But Tyler is leaning against the wall and I see him brush off one of the girls who tries to grab his arm and pull him away somewhere.
Noah and I approach him, and the two men high five.
“Great show, man. But if you sing to my little sister like that again I might have to kill you.”
“Stop it, Noah,” I whisper.
“Maybe I’ll have to date your sister. What would you do then?” Tyler asks.
His question makes me gasp.
Noah mocks punching him in the jaw. “I’d beat the crap out of you, of course. And tell you never to go near her again. I know your reputation. Someone’s gotta protect Delilah from guys like you.”
Tyler laughs. I think he knows that Noah has never protected me from anyone in my life.
“I guess I’ll need to find someone to protect me then, Noah, because I know it’s not gonna be you,” I say.
“Shut up, kid. No one asked you,” he replies.
“Noah, I’m the one gonna have to hit you for talking to your sister like that,” says Tyler.
“Whatever. She’s used to it, man! Anyway, where’s the party gonna be?”
“We’re going back to my penthouse suite at the Hyatt,” Tyler replies. “Don’t worry. There will be plenty of women there for you to flirt badly with, Noah. And while you’re busy doing that, I’ll be busy flirting with your sister.”
He smiles at me as he says this. I can’t tell if he’s joking or not, but
my face flushes as I get that awkward tingly feeling moving its way across my body.
“I’m gonna go grab a beer while I wait,” says Noah. He wanders off and leaves me standing there with Tyler.
“Your brother can be a dick sometimes,” he says.
“Sometimes? I think you don’t really know him as well as you think you do,” I reply.
He chuckles and then gets quiet and serious as he studies my face for a moment. “You know, it has been a really long time since I saw you.”
“Yeah. I’ve changed a lot. You not so much, except for the rock star part of it.”
“I’ve gotta go talk to my manager for a bit, but I really want to catch up with you tonight, Delilah. Your brother tells me you’re in school studying Journalism. That’s pretty wild. I’m sure you’ll be a great reporter.”
“I hope so.”
“Just don’t become a music critic or something. I hate music critics.”
“I would only have good things to say about your music, so you can rest easy, mister.”
“Good,” he says. He winks at me and heads off to find his manager.
I watch as some girls wearing VIP badges attack Tyler. He takes pictures with every last one of them, and I can’t help but feel jealous. I imagine it would be difficult to be in a relationship with a celebrity. I’d always find myself doubting his love for me or thinking about just how easily I could be replaced. It doesn’t matter anyway, because it’s just a fantasy. It won’t ever come true. I sit down on a metal folding chair off in a lonely corner. I don’t feel up for much interaction at the moment.
Eventually, Noah returns and leads me out back to Tyler’s tour bus. We get onboard, and after a while the band and a group of wild girls join us as we head to Tyler’s hotel. It’s almost eleven o’clock, which means it will be Christmas in one hour. Tyler and Noah talk about old times as I just close my eyes and dream of getting my Christmas wish — a kiss from Tyler King.

The party is in full swing soon after we arrive at the hotel. I am pulled away by someone before I can sit down and catch up with Delilah. By the time I finally get a break it’s fifteen minutes later and Delilah is nowhere to be seen.
