Kiss Me (Promise Me Book 3)

“Go on.”
“You showed me what it means to love someone. With you here, for the first time in my life I can picture the future. I think about everything I didn’t have the strength to consider before. Happiness, a family… It makes me laugh, thinking about the old me and what I would have said to me now. I want you by my side, walking with me until we’re feeble and aged. And after everything we’ve been through, I think the scariest thing for me now is picturing my future with you snatched away from it.”
Kai bent and touched his mouth to mine. The softness sent my brain tumbling into a tailspin. There I was, plastered against his chest, completely open and without regret. Through his eyes I saw the best parts of myself. The woman I wanted to be, the only woman in the world to him.
There was always room for firsts in life. I wanted to savor this moment.
Fingers skimmed along the base of my neck while his lips tasted and teased. The angle of the kiss changed, bringing me higher. To incredible peaks I’d been too afraid to climb before. I pressed my lips to his in earnest, tasting him in the slowest way until my knees weakened, egged on by the noises in the back of his throat. We kissed until the edges of my resolve fractured and I could no longer picture my life without this kiss. This man.
The moment he stopped I sucked in a breath. “I have to give it to you. There’s something about you, Kai, something I can’t resist. And you really are a hell of a kisser.”
He cradled me gently, securely, in his arms. “Nell Quade—”
My heart melted. My knees were jelly. Luckily, I had Kai holding on to me. There to steady me any time I stumbled. I forgot about my own weaknesses, the burden of the past and everything holding me back from being happy. “You aren’t going to get all mushy on me, are you? I’ve done enough of that for both of us.”
He smiled. “I love you. I’ll love you until I die, and if there is anything after that, I will still love you.”
“Come to think of it, maybe I can handle a little mush from time to time.”
Kai chuckled. “I’ll try to keep it to a minimum.”
I smiled, injecting every ounce of warmth and affection into the expression. “Don’t. Coming from you, I think I could grow to like it.”
“More good news,” he responded.
Loving him was hard, hard, hard, hard, hard. And oh so worth it.
With the threat of more snow hanging in the air, Kai took my hand, a welcome heat in the chilly night, and linked our fingers so we could walk back inside the bar together.
