Wiggling his dark brows, Clyde grinned. “You mean the porn stuff?”

I wasn’t happy about my girl next door being involved in porn in any aspect of it. But she wasn’t my girl. Not yet anyway. “I’m sure she’s in some executive aspect of it. But yeah, the porn stuff. Anyway, she and I are supposed to run into each other again, or something like that, and set something up. A date of some kind. Apparently, a romantic stroll on the beach is out because rain is in the forecast.”

His nose wrinkled as he hissed, “Crap. Sorry about that, dude.”

“Sorry about what?” Why was he sorry for the rain that was forecasted?

“She’s throwing you off. There’s no rain in the forecast. It’s going to be a gorgeous night. A full moon and everything is what’s up with this night.” He went to lay out on the extra bed in my room, putting his hands behind his head. “So enough of the old flame and onto the business aspect of this trip. You did make a pick up of cocaine and delivered it to the studio, right?”

“I did do that.” It had gone without a hitch. “And in about an hour I have to meet with Gianni Galo, the enforcer for the Warlocks. He wants to talk to me about why I’m interested in becoming a prospect. I suppose he’s going to take what I say and check it all out.”

“That’s probably what he’s going to do. If he’s worth his salt.” Clyde yawned and stretched. “So far, this mission has been a lot more like a vacation than a job. Me and the guys had a breakfast buffet that rivaled the best we have in Baltimore. I am still stuffed. What did you get this morning at the buffet?”

“I didn’t get anything from the hotel’s buffet. I ate a bagel with cream cheese on my way to the MC’s headquarters.” Big breakfasts weren’t my thing. “I work out in the mornings, so eating heavy isn’t a thing that I do that early.”

Sitting up, he flexed his bicep. “I work out three times a day. Well, normally, I do. But this is a vacation. Or pretend vacation or pretend conference or whatever.” As he stood, he went into a deep knee bend. “I guess I’ll get the guys and hit the hotel’s gym to work off breakfast. I don’t want us getting soft. And we’ve got at least a week here, so we’ll get fat if we don’t watch out.”

Running my hand over my shirt that hugged my muscular abs, I had to wonder why Janeen was playing so hard to get. “You know, Janeen and I were tight in high school. She was my first love. But it was an innocent kind of love. No sex. I sort of hated myself for not trying harder to lose my virginity to her. But since we were both virgins, it made it extremely difficult for either of us to put on the first move since we had no idea what that would be.”

“Is she still just as pretty as you remembered her?” He bent over to do some toe touches to limber up before going to work out.

“She had tons of makeup on. It made it very hard to recognize her. It was her voice that clued me in on who she was. But once I knew it was her, I could see semblances of the girl I used to know.” I wanted to see her without all that crap on her face too. I had to know if she was still the same pretty girl after all these years. That wholesome girl I’d known and fell in love with for the first time.

“How are you going to deal with her blowing you off?” his question made me question myself.

“Does it really sound like she blew me off?” I hadn’t taken it that way at all. “Maybe she just saw a different forecast is all. Why wouldn’t she want to see me? We never fought. We were more like best friends than anything else.”

He held up one hand as he wore a knowing expression. “Friends? Best friends? No sex? Dude, you were put in the friendzone back then and you were just too immature to see it for what it really was.”

  No way!

“You’re wrong. Janeen and I were close. I didn’t know about such things back then when we were young, but now I think she might’ve been my soulmate.”

His laugh filled the room. “You sound like a fucking girl.”

With a shrug, I didn’t care what I sounded like. “Janeen had it all,” I recalled the last time I’d ran my hand through her silky, blonde hair as I looked into her blue eyes.

But as I had my little stroll down memory lane, the image if high school age Janeen morphed into Hailey on our wedding day when I had done the same damn thing to her. Before we’d kissed, I had run my hand through her silky blonde locks as I looked into her hazel eyes which had been blue at that time.

Running my hands over my face, I started to realize what I had done to Hailey. I had to sit down on the nearest chair as it all came rushing back to me - the first time I ever saw Hailey and how I’d done a double-take.

I’d thought she was Janeen for a split second.

But then I had pushed that thought right out of my mind as I went to talk to Hailey, and we’d just kept going forward from there.

“Hold on a sec.” Clyde ran his hand over his bare chin as he’d shaved his beard just like he’d said he would. “If I am recalling correctly, you used to bring around girls who looked nothing like your wife. Dark, angsty chicks with multiple piercings and tats are what I’m remembering.”

And he was right. “Yeah, once Janeen and I parted ways, I went in the other directions. Forgoing girls next door, I went for girls who didn’t give two shits about anything, anyone, or any of society's rules. The girls I went after were as rebellious as I was. So, we got along great. Well, until they didn’t stand up to what I thought a woman should be.”

“And what did you think a woman should be, Ryder?” Clyde nodded as he seemed as if he already knew what I had thought. “Wait. Let me guess. You wanted a good girl at home and a bad girl when you were out.”

“Not exactly. See, I wanted a good girl most of the time. And I wanted her to be a little on the bad side, but I didn’t want anyone to get to see that part of her but me.” I had complex ideas of what a woman should be. “When Janeen proved to be all good, then I wanted to see what all bad was like and I didn’t like that much at all. But I got this rep for liking goth chicks and they began coming on to me. Bad girls have no shame, dude. None at all.”

“Don’t I know it,” he said with a chuckle. “In our bar back home, too many of them come in with the regulars and most of them have to come to take a shot at me. But I’m not into bad girls at all.”

“Come to think of it, Clyde, I haven’t seen you with a chick since before I left to visit the state. You one of those committed bachelors or something?” I had to goad him a bit, it was all in good fun though.

“I’m not committed to anything. I kept putting myself out there over and over again for girls who weren’t ready to grow up.” Looking up, he pondered, “I guess I like those young, innocent girls. But the thing that goes along with them is that they hate to leave home and get out from under their momma’s skirt. But I still find that kind of woman to my liking. Unfortunately, now that I’m in my mid-thirties, the girls who fit that bill are still in their early twenties or late teens. Chicks nowadays are born grown. But I want to cultivate my woman. I want to mold her, shape her, and teach her how to please me and only me.”

“Fuck, Clyde, you’re a goddamned BDSM Master.” I laughed as I was just messing with him, then I smacked him on the back. “You like to use the whips and chains on them young’uns?”

“You’re a real jokester, huh, Ryder?” He smacked me in the arm. “I don’t want to rule them, just teach one of them how to make me happy. And I strive to make my girl happy too.” With a frown, he added, “Not that I’ve been working on anyone lately. No one has taken my attention in the last couple of years. My tastes might be changing.”

“I think it needs to. You might want to start thinking about how you can accept a woman for who she is and hope she can do the same for you. Shaping a person sounds like a lot of fucking work if you ask me.” I just wanted to get to know Janeen again and I would gladly take her for what she’d become in our time apart.

“You’re right, it is.” He headed toward the door to get going. “You have that meeting with the Wicked Warloc
ks’ enforcer. Where is this meeting taking place?”

“At their bar on the second floor of their building. It’s got a front area with slot machines and I’ve seen people who look like tourists coming and going there. I think you and the other men can pull off your goofy guys’ act to keep an eye on me. Not that I expect any trouble.” I got ready to leave too, following behind him.

“Yeah, well it’s our job to watch out for you, Ryder. So, we’ll be dropping by the place in a bit.” He took off in one direction before I walked into the hallway. “No one’s out here. Come on out and get going.”

Later, as I walked into the bar the MC’s enforcer had told me to meet him at, I saw him sitting with a couple of other guys. He waved me over to join them. “Hey ya, Ryder, over here.”

“Hi.” I walked over, extending my hand to Gianni. Good to see you again.” I’d met him for only a few minutes at my initial meeting with the council. Looking at the other two men at the table, I introduced myself once more as I’d seen them at the prior meeting but wasn’t sure of their names as they had on business suits now, instead of their leather jackets with their names and ranks on them. “Ryder Winslow, gentlemen.”

“Duran Costa,” the biggest guy said then jerked his head toward the guy sitting next to him. “And you remember Carlo Deluca, our vice-president.”

“I certainly do.” I shook both of their hands before taking the one free chair left at the round table. “Have you guys ordered lunch yet?” I was starving. The bagel was long gone now.

“Yeah,” Carlo said. “I got us some paninis and homemade potato chips. And a couple of bottles of white wine too. You like wine, Ryder?”

“Yes, sir.” I didn’t get a bad vibe off these men. They were alright in my book.

Maybe they can be reasoned with about the selling of drugs in our town.

Gianni didn’t want to waste a second. “So, I heard a little about why you’re here. But how’s about you tell me why you want to become a Wicked Warlock.”

“So, I’m from Camden originally. New Jersey was my first home.” I thought getting the old Jersey brotherhood thing going would help me have an in with these guys.

Carlo stroked his bearded chin. “Why’d you leave in the first place, if ya don’t mind my askin’?”

“My cousin had invited me to spend the summer after my high school graduation with him in Baltimore.” It wasn’t a lie, so the story was an easy one to tell. “I already had a love for bikes, and he helped me get a job as a gopher at this Harley shop. And there I was able to watch the mechanics that I got things for. I picked up what they were doing quickly and one of them was a member of the Iron Cobras.”

“So that was your in with that MC then?” Gianni asked to be sure.

“It was.” I smiled at the pretty waitress who brought a bottle of wine and four glasses. “Hi.”

She smiled right back at me. “Hi.”

With the wine poured and the waitress promising us the food was almost ready, Duran urged me to go on, “So, let’s get back to why you joined the Iron Cobras.”

“My cousin had gotten himself into trouble and he had to go spend some time in the slammer. So, I was left alone in the city. I asked about working in the Harley shop the MC had and got the job. Soon after, I began prospecting and after a couple of years, I earned my jacket and membership.”

Gianni took a drink of white wine. “So, let’s get to when things began going south for you.”

Picking up the glass, I took a drink before I got started on the sob story. “So, I was set up by some punks who wanted to get even with me. They filled my trunk with drugs then called in the cops. I spent a couple of years in the pen. I’d sent my wife away before I was put away. But she came back a few months before I was released. She wanted to get our home all ready for me.”

“She sounds like a nice lady,” Duran remarked.

“Yeah, well, she was a nice lady.” I had to act like I hated her now. “But I had no idea that she would actually fall for the MC brother that I had watch over her. Like we all know, one of our brothers can care for our old ladies when we have to be away for extended periods of time. But falling in love isn’t a thing that they’re supposed to do.”

“So she fell in love with your MC brother?” Carlo asked as he leaned up to put his elbows on the table and steeple his long fingers. “But what about your brother? Didn’t he set her straight?”

“Apparently not. He and she told me upon on my release that they were in love and my wife was leaving me. So, I beat their asses, then went to the council, threw my jacket at them and left. Jersey called my name, so I headed this way. And Atlantic City sounded cool. When I got here, I heard about your club and how prestigious it is.”

Carlo wasn’t about to beat around the bush. “So, what can you do for us, Mr. Winslow?”

Looking over my shoulder, like I was making sure no one was around who shouldn’t hear me, I said, “I am an excellent runner, pusher, and supplier. I know good stuff when I see it, smell it, and hear about it. I can be your guy in the medication biz. I made my old club upward of a mil in the last three months since I was set free. If you’d like me to do the same for you, then let’s talk.”

“You aren’t from here anymore. So, how can you make us money?” Gianni asked with a knowing smile.

“Ah, I am not from here anymore. But what I noticed when I got here and saw your bikes and your patches was that I’ve seen some of your boys around Baltimore. You’re scoring over there as well as here.” Tapping my finger on the table, I put it all down for them. “I would love nothing more than to go back to Baltimore and take all the clients I made for the Iron Cobras and make them your clients. So, what do you guys think about that idea?”

They all looked at one another as they nodded, then Gianni said, “Let’s see what you can do here for a week or so. If you do good, we’ll have another meeting and talk some more about moving your ass back to Baltimore. Only this time you’ll go back, wearing our patch. Sound cool to you, Mr. Winslow?”

Totally cool. And exactly what I want to hear too.

“It does.” But I had a bit more I wanted to hear about too. Janeen Smithers and what exactly she was doing for the Wicked Warlocks. “Can I ask about a certain young lady who is working in your video production department?”

Carlo nodded. “Many a young man do want to know about the young beauties in our movies. Which one are you asking about?”

“She’s not in the movies. Just a producer or some sort of an executive, I’m sure.” Janeen wasn’t the sort of girl who took her clothes off for money. She had pride and was much too smart to need to resort to that kind of thing. Her brain and acting ability were her strong shits.

Not that I had a clue how her naked body looked, but I was sure it was awesome. I was also sure that she wasn’t about to not only put it on display but let men screw her in front of cameras and the world too.

  Not my Janeen.

Gianni smirked as he looked at the waitress who’d brought our lunch. “Thanks, honey.” His hand rested on her ass as she placed the plates on the table in front of us without batting an eye. “What’s this girl’s name who you’re asking about?”

“Janeen Smithers.” I watched the young waitress’s expression to see if the older man’s hand on her ass bothered her at all. But she remained pleasant as she put the last item down, then smiled at Gianni before leaving us.

Not even one of the men seemed to know who I was talking about as none of them had answered me. So, I waited patiently, taking a bite of my panini. They had to know who I was talking about.

Duran swallowed the bite he’d taken. “Did this woman have a bodyguard with her?”

She did have a man with her, but I hadn’t thought him to be a bodyguard. “There was a man with her, but I don’t think he was her bodyguard. I think he was an associate.”

Duran’s skeptical expression had me wondering why he’d look that way. “What did this associate of hers look like?”
/>
“Big guy. Italian. Thick neck,” I tried to recall some more aspects of the man. “I’m pretty sure that she called him Max.”

All three men got smiles on their faces at the same time. Then Gianni got up and went to the wall, pulling a flyer off it, then brought it back to the table. He tossed it toward me. “That’s from the last movie she made.”

  She made a movie?

  Chapter Six

  Janeen

Pulling on my jacket, I had plans to go out to get some drinks with Candy and some of the other girls I worked with. After a few drinks, if Ryder happened to find me, then I wouldn’t be so anxious – or so I hoped.

Just as I got to the elevator inside my penthouse, I saw the red light come on that meant someone had come up unannounced. My heart raced as I wondered if Ryder had found where I lived somehow.

No one except Angelo knew my given name. If Ryder did ask about a girl named Janeen Smithers, no one would have a clue who he was talking about. So, thinking that he was about to be there when the elevator door opened was just stupid.

“You, foolish girl.” I’d forgotten about Max and how he’d gone down to make a sweep of the ground floor to be sure no creeps lurked, waiting for me to come down. It had to be him coming back up to escort me down.

I turned to look in the mirror that hung across the room one more time. When the doors opened, I stopped breathing as Ryder stepped out, holding a piece of paper in his fist. “What have you done?”

I definitely needed the alcohol to deal with him. Without turning around to face him, I went toward my bar. “How about a Mason jar of moonshine, Ryder? I think I could use something like that right about now.” I didn’t really have any moonshine, but I sure wished I did.

The first bottle I could reach was coconut rum. So, I twisted the top off, then put it to my lips, taking a hefty gulp. It burned all the way down too. If it hadn’t been so damn rough, I might’ve been able to drink enough to knock me out, so I didn’t have to face Ryder and see the disappointment on his gorgeous face.
