Callum's Love [Men of Crazy Angle Ranch: 5]

Page 9

by Bellann Summer

Ryan ran as fast as he could from the ranch house all the way to the foaling barn. He only fell twice. Thank goodness he didn’t rip or hurt anything.

Callum had called him and said Maggie needed him.

Yanking open the barn door he raced over to the stall where Callum, Dees, Graham, and Adam were huddled around Maggie. Ryan stopped and stared in horror. Maggie was standing with her tail in the air, and there were two legs sticking out of her back end.

He watched as she shifted her big body violently, almost throwing Graham and Adam against the wall of the stall.

“Ryan, get in here and talk to Maggie,” Callum ordered.

Covered in sweat and his hands flying, Callum tied a rope around the little legs. Maggie shifted and stamped her feet.

  “Ryan,” Callum called.

The urgency in Callum’s voice snapped Ryan into action. He hurried around the men and started talking to the distressed animal.

“Hey Maggie, it’s okay honey, Callum will help you. Soon you will have a pretty baby to take care of.”

Ryan kept talking. Eventually, he got close enough to the agitated horse to be able to pet her, trying to comfort her.

“You’re doing great, keep talking,” Callum urged.

“Come on, Maggie. You can do it,” Ryan said.

It was getting harder not to start panicking. Maggie was grunting and groaning. Ryan could tell the sounds were settling into a rhythm. The horse’s sides would billow out and then hold steady until Maggie exhaled loudly.

The four other men in the stall were racing around doing things with rope and long, tong-type instruments that Ryan was glad he couldn’t see clearly. He continued to encourage Maggie to have her baby and thank the stars above he was at the head and not in on the tail end of the action.

“Here it comes,” Callum called out. “Would you like to come over here and watch, Ryan?”

  “No.”

Minutes later a cheer went up. Ryan continued to talk and pet Maggie. He could tell she was starting to weaken.

“Callum, Maggie doesn’t seem to be doing so well,” Ryan said. Fear was climbing up his spine.

“It’s okay. The foal is out. I have things I can do to help her,” Callum reassured him. Ryan’s love welled up for his big strong man.

  “Callum?”

  “Yes, cutie?”

  “Boy or girl?”

  “It’s a boy.”
