Boys Club: How Far Would You Go?

"That's good, Daisy,"said the doctor. "Relax for a second. I see the head."

Oh, really? Interestingly, I tried to peek at the small sheet wall that separated me from Daisy's lower half, but I could only see her knees, and the doctor's head poking out between them.

I looked back at Daisy, whose eyes were closed and looked relaxed, and took a step toward the foot of the bed.

"Oh, shit,"I breathed. It was really the tip of a head. Coming out of... Daisy... you know?

  Fuck. I couldn't look away.

"What is it? " Daisy asked.

  "Don't push, okay. Don't push,"the doctor said.

"Elijah? she said, breathless. "It's happening again."

I staggered, torn between looking at what was going on down there, and Daisy's pleading face. I grabbed her hand, rubbing her back.

  "It's okay, honey."

  "I want to push."

"Don't push, Daisy,"said the doctor. "Just breathe through it."

  "I can't. I have to push,"she grunted.

"B, look at me,"I ordered, looking at the baby before I looked her in the eyes. "You can do it. Just breathe with me. Just like we practiced. " I began to breathe, slowly and calmly, and after a minute Daisy joined me.

  "That's correct. That's good,"I said calmly.

  she sighed, lying down.

"Okay, Daisy. You're doing very well,"the doctor said. "This next contraction, I want you to push as hard as you can, okay? This is it."

  "Well,"she said weakly.

"Here we go,"he said. "Now, Daisy. Push!"

Daisy sat down, quietly. Every bit of their energy was focused on one thing: getting the baby out.

"That's good, honey,"I said, stretching to look.

  Holy shit!

"You're doing very well,"I muttered, I was hypnotized... as if suddenly, with a little sip, a baby got into the hands of the doctor I was waiting for...

  "Fuck! " I exclaimed.

  "Elijah! " Daisy said grudgingly.

  "I'm sorry."

The doctor delivered the first baby - the child - to the young adolescent doctor, who rushed him to a coffee table, listening to his heart.

"Is he all right? " I asked.

But there was no time for an answer, because Daisy sat down again.

"Here comes number two,"said the doctor.

  Daisy pushed.

  And one became two...

  Then three.

  Holy shit.

  I was a father.

  Daisy

  "How about Campbell?"

  "Sounds like soup."

  "Chandler"?

  "Friends."

"I liked friends,"Elijah muttered. "Hey, what about Jessie?"

  I wrinkled my nose.

We were finally alone. The babies were sleeping, one on each side of me, and the other in Elijah's arms as he leafed through a baby book. We had decided on the name of one of the boys, Franklin... and we knew from the beginning that our girl would be called Tamara, but we were perplexed about how to call Baby Boy Lynch number two.

We had already exhausted the A's and B's and we were almost through the C's.

  "Coleman? Elijah volunteered.

  "Flashlight."

"Hey,"he said after a moment. "What do you think of Stirling?"

Stirling? I repeated. "A little pretentious, don't you think?"

  "I think it's okay."

"Stirling. " I considered it, letting it roll in my brain. "Stirling Lynch."

  "Well, technically,' Lynch,'"he corrected.

"Stirling Lynch, I said. "Not bad."

I sat a little bit. "Stirling Lynch, get your ass over here right now and take out the trash."

  Elijah laughed. I smiled.

He put the baby's book down and rose gently from the chair, moving to sit beside me in bed. He looked at the boy in his arms.

"What do you think, buddy? " he asked. "Do you like Stirling?"

He blew up, rubbing his nose with a little pink fist.

Elijah smiled at me with a smile. "I think that's a yes."

I felt the tears puncture my eyes.

"Baby? " he asked. "Are you all right?"

I nodded furiously. "Stupid hormones,"I muttered.

He bowed to kiss me gently, speaking on my lips. "You did it amazing. Thank you."

I smiled. "You helped, you know."

He sat down, with bizarre lips. "I know. Me and my fucking super sperm."

It hurt like hell. "I'm sorry about that."

Elijah laughed, kissed me again and then looked at the babies. "It wasn't that bad, really. Next time it'll be easier."

I opened his eyes. "You can't be serious."

  "Don't you want more?"

I looked at it seriously. "Read my lips, Elijah. We never are. Having. Sex. Again."

Elijah looked like he killed his puppy. "Never?"

"Did you see what came out of my vagina?"

Elijah moaned. "Okay, got it. " He bowed to kiss me again, gently at first, then with a touch of tongue.

My body warmed up. Stupid body.

  "Okay,"I complained.

  "Maybe never."

Elijah smiled with a smile, victorious.

The door opened, and Mabel's head peered out of the corner. "Can we come in? " she asked. I nodded, and suddenly the room was full. The boys gathered around, Terri and Mabel fighting over who had to grab one of the babies first. In the end, Terri picked up Tamara, Mabel grabbed Franklin, and Eddie came in and took Stirling away, lulled him like a pro. Porky huddled in his corner, sniffing around a little bit.

"They're beautiful,"Mabel said in amazement. "And so quiet."

Of course, that was the signal for Franklin to wake up, whimpering a little bit before exploding into a loud scream. Stirling and Tamara woke up frightened, quickly picking up the cry. The nurse came in, carrying bottles and diapers, and Elijah took Stirling away, bouncing him slightly with a panicked look in his eyes.

Yep. Paternity. Eighteen years to go.

  Porky sneezed hard, then farted.

"Speaking of which,"Ethan said with a yawn. "Can we go to Denny's now? I'm starving."
