  Chapter One

  -Azayna

“I know you’re fucking lying,” I said as I stared at that nigga Pat because I knew like hell he was lying.

There was absolutely no way in the world that he was my daddy. It couldn’t be. I looked at his face, and there wasn’t a smile in sight. Nothing about the way he was looking at me gave way to any hidden lies, even if that was what I wanted to believe. I mean, I didn’t necessarily want to believe it, but I sure as hell wasn’t sold on him being my mama’s baby daddy.

Though she’d never mentioned my father or who he was, I still didn’t know if this was real or not. How could it be? If this was, in fact, true, this nigga wasn’t shit. I’d never physically met him before the other day at Master’s house, but I’d been hearing about him for years.

“I’m not a liar.” His eyes scanned my face.

“That’s the same lie all niggas tell.” I sat back in my seat and looked out of the window for a minute. I needed to regroup.

  “Say something.”

“Fuck you.” I cut my eyes at the nigga and snatched the handle to his door so hard that I’m surprised I didn’t break it off.

“Aye, you better not tear up my shit.”

I spun in my seat and rolled my eyes. “What you gon’ do, Daddy? Whoop me?” I asked sarcastically. “Fuck out of here,” I mumbled while letting myself out of his truck.

I was on my way back to the bus stop so I could get back to my side of town, but the nigga who claimed to be my daddy had come after me and snatched my arm.

“Get off me!” I yelled while pulling my arm from his grasp.

“You better cut this childish ass shit out. I know you don’t know me, but that don’t mean I won’t kill your ass.”

  “I bet you would.”

The atmosphere around us was tense and filled with so much emotion that I could feel and was sure he could as well, but neither of us spoke on it. Instead, we stood there in complete silence other than background noise, just looking at each other.

I didn’t necessarily know what he was looking for, but I was doing my best to recognize some type of resemblance between us. I needed to make some sort of sense of the entire situation. All of this time, I’d been wondering why he’d chosen me out of all Master’s girls to do his dirty work, but now I knew.

“What do you want from me?”

He squinted and looked out toward the cars before looking back at me. “I want us to get to know each other.”

  “Why now?”

“Because there’s no time like the present.”

I stood in front of him with my mind in a thousand different places. I honestly didn’t know what to do at this point. I’d been craving some type of family relations since my mother and grandma passed, but not like that. Pat had been around for years, obviously knowing I was his daughter, and now he all of a sudden wanted to spark a relationship. Something wasn’t right.

“You’ve known I was your daughter all of this time, and you didn’t come to me? Do you know how long I’ve been on my own? Trying to make ends meet just so I could make it to another day?”

When he shook his head, that threw me off some. “Nah, I actually didn’t know you were mine.” He looked at me then back at his truck. “We should talk somewhere else where we can hear each other.” His outstretched hand motioned toward the passing cars. “This isn’t something that should be talked about on the side of the street. Furthermore, I don’t just stand out in the open like this.”

  “Where?”

“We can go to my house.”

I shook my head. “Nope. We can go grab some food or something.”

“So, you were comfortable with coming to my house when you thought I wanted sex, but you won’t come as my daughter?”

His daughter? That sounded so foreign to me. I’d never really been anyone’s daughter. Even when my mother was alive, she’d never really formed any type of endearing bond with me. She was always working and sliding off with niggas trying to pay bills. It was like her whole purpose was to provide for me, and that was it. My granny had to be the rest. God rest her soul; she’d done the best she could, but I’d inwardly always wanted that type of relationship with my parents.

“I wasn’t comfortable then. I just didn’t want you to harm my friends.”

  “That’s still not over.”

My mouth dropped open, and he smirked. “Close your fucking mouth and come on.”

He took off walking, and I followed. We were back in his car and headed down the street in no time. Neither of us was talking anymore, both probably trying to think of the best way to maneuver around this awkward situation. Roughly twenty minutes later, we parked in front of a nice sized house. It wasn’t as large as Master’s, but it wasn’t small. There were two other cars in the driveway, a red pickup truck with big off-road tires on it, and a black Range Rover with extra dark tint.

  “Get out.”

  “Don’t rush me,” I sassed.

I didn’t know who in the hell he thought he was talking to.

He might have been my daddy, but I was grown as hell, and I didn’t take orders from niggas. I didn’t care who they were. Master was the only one who I really listened to, and that was only because he never really bossed me around. His commands held options. The way Pat had just told me to get out made me feel like he really was my daddy, and I was his eight-year-old honor roll child, not the grown prostitute that I was.

“Listen, I’m not trying to boss you around or nothing, but you gon’ respect me, you understand?”

I ignored his stern tone and walked up his sidewalk. The closer I got to his truck, the more I liked it. It was so nice, and it was my favorite color. I’d always wanted a small car but looking at that truck and how sweet it looked had me thinking otherwise. When I got to the door, I stopped and touched the tire. The ridges felt so good against my fingertips that I smiled for absolutely no reason.

  “You like that?”

I nodded without looking at him.

  “You want it?”

Okay, I turned around that time. I still didn’t say anything, but he had my attention.

“Do you have a car? I noticed you rode the bus to meet me.” He walked closer and hit one of the fobs on his keychain. The locks on the truck clicked. “Matter of fact, I heard you ride the bus all the time. That, or walk.” He moved toward me and pulled the driver side door open.

I stepped back so that I didn’t get hit in the head with the door. I was so short that if the door swung open enough, it would surely tear my face up.

“Why find out all of this stuff about me from other people instead of just getting to know me for yourself?”

“Azayna, it was always my plan to meet you. I just didn’t want to do it prematurely.” He stepped to the side and grabbed my hand. “We’ll talk about all of that though. Get in.”

I smiled brightly and allowed him to help me into the front seat of the truck. I was on cloud nine. If I thought I’d been in love with the outside, the inside was ten times better.

  “Can yo
u drive?”

I nodded in a hurry. “Yes, Master taught me.”

I didn’t miss the way he dropped his head and shook it.

  “That should have been me.”

“Yes sir, it should have, but it wasn’t.”

I wasn’t about to make this nigga feel better for skipping out on my life. Had he been around, my mama probably wouldn’t have had to work so hard, probably would still be here, and my life would have been a lot different.

  “Come on, let’s go inside.”

I kept looking around the truck for a few more minutes, totally disregarding his request. I didn’t oblige until I was satisfied with seeing every part of the truck. I turned to slide out, and he took my hand so that I could jump. Once I was on my feet, he walked off, and I followed. The inside of his house was nice and decorated to death, so I assumed I obviously had a step mama floating around somewhere.

He didn’t say anything before walking out of the living room and leaving me there alone. Since I wasn’t sure what he was doing or where he’d gone, I took a seat on the sofa and pulled out my phone to text Egypt. I was missing him something terrible.

Azayna: Why do I miss you so much?

I continued looking around and waiting for his text back. Egypt was a pretty good texter and never really kept me waiting long, so versus putting my phone away, I kept it in my hand. My heart nearly jumped out of my chest when I noticed that he was Facetiming me. I looked around wildly, trying to decide whether I going to answer it or not. If I did, he would know I wasn’t home, but if I didn’t, he was going to assume the worst of me. We were early on, and I wanted to make sure he knew he could trust me.

His face popped up as soon as I answered the call. I could tell he was in his car from the background. He wasn’t looking at me but was looking out of the window instead, showing me the light brown hair on his chin. I was clicking my volume down when he finally looked at me. He smiled, and I melted.

“Hey, handsome.” I half moaned my greeting.

“What’s going on, pretty mama? What you up to?”

I was blushing like crazy. It was insane how bad I was feeling this man. “Nothing, just missing you.”

“Shut up, you don’t miss shit.”

His verbiage was so thuggish, but the smile on his face told it all. He missed me too and was getting high off the way I spoke to him.

“Yes, I do. How you gon’ tell me?”

“Because I know.” He winked at me before looking back out of his window. “I’m out here doing a couple of things. I just wanted to see you for a minute. It might be a li’l while before I make it back out your way.”

“It’s cool. Handle your business. I’ll be here.”

“Yeah.” He rubbed his chin and licked his lips. “What that pussy hitting like? I know my li’l joint missing a nigga.”

There was absolutely nothing I could do after hearing that. I was done. Egypt was everything I needed. I was so outdone that I couldn’t even think of anything to say to that, which wasn’t like me at all. When it came to that sex talk, I was the queen of it, but Egypt was different. Everything about him made me nervous and shy.

“I wish I could tell you how good it tasted.” He pulled at one of his dreads while still eyeing me. “I had grabbed me some breakfast from Burger King this morning and ended up throwing that shit in the trash. Ain’t shit out here that can compare to the way you taste. Everything else been nasty as shit.”

“Egypt!” I cracked up laughing at his analogy because it was so foolish, but it made me feel indescribably good.

“Shit, I’m for real.” He exhaled as if he was frustrated. “I been trying to eat all day and ain’t been able to. If I starve to death, it’s gon’ be your fault.”

“You won’t starve, bae. I’ll feed you.”

“Hell yeah, you will. I’m back in that shit as soon as I get to the crib later, so gone head and get your mind right.”

“It’s already right.” I smiled. “How late do you think you’ll be?”

He looked at the black Apple Watch on his wrist. “Another few hours. I got to go see what this pussy ass nigga Master is talking about. He been fucking up my bread. I know that’s your people, but if he keeps on playing with me, y’all gon’ be daddy-less.” He shook his head. “Fuck all that, you already daddy-less. He ain’t even your people no more, but you get what I’m saying.”

I nodded because I did, but him using the word daddy, had my mind going back to Pat. When I raised my head to look around the room, I damn near dropped my phone. I jumped so hard when I saw him standing there, I didn’t know what to do. I hadn’t even heard him come back. Damn, how long had he been there?

“Don’t worry about that. I’ll holla at him about it.”

“What? No, the fuck you won’t either. You ain’t about to talk to another nigga about me. I can handle that shit. You don’t need to be in that type of business no way. You need to just chill.”

I frowned at his tone of voice. “I was just trying to help.”

“I don’t need no help from you. All I need you to do is keep on being my remedy. I got the rest of this stuff.”

I nodded and smiled before cutting my eyes at Pat. He was standing there with his arms folded, not giving a damn about invading my privacy. I wanted to tell him to go back to where he’d come from, but I could tell that wasn’t an option, so I just prayed he didn’t say anything while I was on the phone.

  “You got it, love.”

“Bet.” Egypt sat up in his seat and began moving around, doing one thing or another before raising the phone so that I could see his face head-on. When he smiled at me, his eyes squinted a little. “Get back to doing what you were doing. I’ma holla at you.”

“Okay, hit me up when you’re free or when you’re on your way.”

  “Aight. Peace, boo.”

  I was back smiling again.

“Look at you over there smiling, looking all pretty and shit. Get off my phone, man. You trying to have a nigga not working.” He laughed, and my heart skipped a beat. “I already be thinking about you enough. You keep smiling at me like that, I’ma be tossing my work to the side just so I can be up under you.”

  “Do it!” I yelled playfully.

He laughed at me and shook his head.

  “No, girl, bye.”

“Bye, bae.” I waved at the camera until the screen blinked.

I made sure the call was over before sticking my phone back into my fanny pack. I took my time before looking over at Pat, but when I finally did, his expression was unreadable.

  “That was Egypt?”

I wanted to ask him how he knew and why did he even care, but I didn’t. “Yes.”

  “So, that’s your li’l boyfriend?”

“No. I told you what we were.”

“Sounded different on the phone. You told me he didn’t like you. That doesn’t sound like the case to me.”

I shrugged and didn’t say anything. I did, in fact, tell him that, but that was before. Egypt and I had grown closer since then, and until I was comfortable with Pat, I wasn’t going to waste my time explaining that to him.

  “Follow me.”

He left the room again, and I hopped up to follow him. We walked up a flight of stairs that led to another set of rooms. There were two that I could see, but also three other closed doors on the opposite end of the hallway. The last door of the three opened slowly just as we passed, and out walked a dark-skinned nigga with some neat dreads. Good Lord, he was fine. He didn’t say anything at first, just looked from me to Pat then back to me. I was shocked when he extended his hand in my direction.

  “Blue. Dream, right?”

I shook my head and apprehensively took his hand. He was just so fine that it was taking me a minute to get my nerves together.

  “Azayna.”

He smiled. “Much better. My apologies, beautiful. It’s nice to meet you.”

“Aight now, nigga. This my damn daughter you trying to finesse.” Pat r
eached out and pulled our hands apart.

Blue and I both laughed at the rude yet playful notion. I looked at Pat for only a moment before my eyes were right back on Blue. He was breathtaking and judging by the blue bandana that he had hanging from his back pocket, he was a banger. I loved a man in a gang. I sighed. I needed so much help. True Life; Dream, the prostitute is infatuated and will bust her pussy open for any nigga who bangs.

“I’m just trying to be polite.” Blue pressed his closed fist against Pat’s before sliding by us. “I’m about to head out. I’ll hit you up later.”

  “Bet. I’ll be here.”

Blue descended the same stairs we’d just come up but stopped in the middle and called my name. I turned to face him, and he winked.

“I hope you’re still here when I get back.”

I shrugged while trying to suppress a bashful smile. “What if I’m not?”

“Then give this nigga permission to slide me your number.”

Blue looked at Pat and burst out laughing before carrying on down the stairs. I wanted to stand there and watch him walk away, but I wasn’t exactly sure what kind of nigga Pat was, nor was I trying to go there with any man outside of Egypt.

“Ignore that fool.” Pat began to walk again. “That’s the li’l homie Blue. He crashes here with me a lot because his spot is too far out of town. He’s good people but plays a lot so don’t take him too serious.”

  “I’m not,” I immediately quipped.

Pat looked over his shoulder at me. “Oh, yeah, I forgot. You got your li’l nigga Egypt, with his bitch ass.”

Something slick was on the tip of my tongue, but I held it back. Pat didn’t even know Egypt enough to be worried about whether he was a bitch or not so I wouldn’t go there with him. I continued my admiration of his home instead. The large room we’d just entered was half decorated and had a bunch of stuff that didn’t match. Weights and workout machines were on one side, clothes were on the other, and a pool table was near the TV.

I frowned because he really needed to get his house in some type of order. Apparently, I was the only one who cared because he bypassed it like it was nothing and continued into a smaller area of the room that looked like a mini living room. It had two sofas, a coffee table, and a large television. It was clear by the empty food containers, weed rubbish, and the empty alcohol bottles, that this was his room and where he spent most of his time. He sat down first, and I followed.
