He nodded, “Crowd went nuts. You really worked them up with the train wreck act.” He paused, “haven’t seen anything like that for a long time. It was like you owned the place.”

Both Mikayla and Ethan shared a smile as if they’d heard that before.

“Anyway, you should both be proud of what you did today. I know it was a big step for both of you.” He looked down at their clasped hands, “A big step, like it was magic or something.”

“Or something,” Ethan acknowledged, then tugged on Mikayla’s hand. She squeezed back, “Mia is doing open mike tonight, downtown. Maybe join us?”

Putting his hands in his pockets, Evenson shrugged, “Maybe. I’m gonna head over to the studio for a while. I got an idea or two while you were playing. I’m gonna give it try.” He grinned, “Maybe throw an old trumpet one last time.”

He took a few steps down the hallway, enough for Amanda and Mia to hurriedly veer out of his way, then turned back to Ethan and Mikayla, “You both have two years left. That’s means there’s a lot of music left to be played. Maybe I’ll figure it out?”

Mikayla smiled, shaking her head, “Let it go, Doc. See ya tonight.”
