She Turned into a Werewolf
Page 29
I started to scan the text of the book. It stated that the society was built all the way back in the 1800s. It developed a few years after the war started. The society believed that the werewolves were losing their humanity. They believed someone had to put an end to it, they were becoming too dangerous. The man who started the organization was named Aleksandr. He was born in Russia, and when he found out that werewolves existed, he thought someone had to do something about it. Attacking them during their weakest moment, the war, was the perfect opportunity. He trained a group of humans who knew about werewolves to kill them. During the war, they attacked. Many werewolves ended up dead in the process. The book goes on to talk about how nobody really knows where their bases are located. It is important to find them, that way the hunters can be wiped away before the werewolves. If we do not find them and destroy them, our species will continue to drop in numbers. They could kill each and every single one of us before we have the chance to defend ourselves.
My heart pounded loudly in my ears. How did I not know anything about these people? I was extremely surprised Seth didn’t mention it to me. He probably wasn’t too worried about it, his cockiness probably thought he could take care of it all on his own. If I really have these certain “powers,” I was going to need to learn how to use them properly. If anything that vision said was true, Cath and I are both in danger. Especially Cath. My heart dropped at the thought of my sister. She was the one that I saw get shot, and for some reason or another, disappear into the unknown abyss right before my very own eyes. Whatever I do, I can’t let that happen. Right now, the first thing that I needed to do was inform Cath. She is a grown woman; she needs to be able to know for herself. Instead of getting out of bed to get her, I simply called her name. I knew that she could hear me with her new hearing capabilities. Plus, I was too lazy to actually get out of bed. Again, my so-called declared lazy day.
I listened as her soft footsteps approached my door. She opened the door slowly, her eyebrows in a furrow. By looking at her scrunched face, she was confused as to why I would call her into my room. I patted the bed next to me.
“Sit Cath, I need to tell you something that I saw. I’m going to be honest with you, I debated on whether to tell you or not, but I decided that you are strong enough to know. Plus, it would be wrong of me not to tell you since it is about you. Well, about us to be exact.” I told her.
“What happened?” Cath asked even more confused than what she originally was when she first made it to the doorway.
I let out all of my breath that I was holding in, and started explaining what happened between us and the member of the TWHS. I was careful not to leave any details out as any of them could be important.
After I got done explaining all the details, I looked into my sister’s beautiful eyes to see if I could read anything she was thinking. Boy, I wished I could read her mind too. Unfortunately, she did not technically belong to our pack, so I would never be able to hear her thoughts. She remained quiet for a few minutes processing her thoughts. Her lips tightly sealed together, careful not to let out even the smallest of peeps.
“Cath?” I asked after a few minutes. “Are you ok?” I was beginning to get concerned.
Maybe I was wrong? Maybe she wasn’t strong enough to handle the news of her death. To my surprise, Catherine started laughing hard. She put her right hand to her stomach and bent over. I was beginning to think she lost her mind. I simply stared at her in complete astonishment.
“What’s so funny?” I asked her baffled, a look of shock spread across my face.
“You can tell the future Nina, I never knew that was possible.”
I gave out a small chuckle. “Same here. I just found that out today as well. Plus, I don’t even believe it. I elected to tell you in the small possible chance that it was a thing.”
Cath shrugged her shoulders, “at this point, I think I believe anything someone tells me. I mean just a little bit ago, you first told me werewolves were real. I never thought they were a thing either so who knows in this world.”
I responded, “you know, you are very right. I never thought werewolves or witches were true, but here we are.” I said as I lifted my hands up into the air.
“Wait wait wait,” Cath said as she held up her pointer finger. “Witches are real?!?” She exclaimed. “How didn’t I know about this either?” She asked me offended.
I let out a loud laugh. “Lady, you need to ask other people these questions. I’m barely figuring them out for myself.”
“We are screwed, aren’t we?” She asked me with a small smile on her face.
“Pretty much.” I agreed as we laughed in unison.
A loud knock sounded from our outside door. I let out a loud grown “Ugh. Who is here to ruin my lazy day?”
“Oh, is that what you were doing in here?” Cath laughed.
“Maybe.” I smiled as I stretched on the bed.
“You know you should shut that fireplace off. You’re roasting me alive.”
“Nah, I think you can handle it.” I smiled at her and wiggled my eyebrows.
Cath gave me a small push. “You’re a bully.” She replied.
“The best.” I simply responded.
Catherine gave a small chuckle. “Come on, let’s go see who it is.”
“Why do you need me?” I whined not wanting to leave my bed. I pulled the covers over my face to hide.
“Because we both know that it is for you anyway. Everyone just comes here for you.” Cath said to me.
I poked my face out of the covers, a guilty expression on my face. “Cath.” I started but she cut me off with a wave of her hand.
“It’s ok Nina, I’m not mad or jealous.” She said as she looked straight into my eyes.
“Are you sure?” I questioned her.
“Absolutely.” She replied as she patted my leg. “Now let’s go. Give me your hand.”
I let out a huge sigh and threw the blankets off myself. I smiled and gratefully took my sister's hand as she helped me off the bed. We began our journey to see who was at our door and ruining my one lazy day.
Chapter 5
Catherine put her small hand against the diamond-shaped handle and opened the door all the way. It was Caleb and Reed together.
“Hey guys,” Catherine said. “What’s up?” She asked them while signaling them to come in.
“Hey Cath, hey Nina,” Caleb said.
“Hey babe,” Reed winked at Catherine which caused her to turn a bright hue of red. I gently pushed her out of the way and rolled my eyes.
“Reed, I told you to stop playing with my sister,” I said shaking my head in a disapproving manner.
“Aww darling, you’re just jealous.” Reed retorted.
I laughed and said, “just get in here.”
Caleb walked in first and Reed followed. Caleb didn’t waste any time before telling us the purpose of coming over.
“So, Lucas sent us to come get you guys.”
“Why didn’t he come himself?” Cath asked confused. Everyone just looked at her like she should know why. “Oh yeah right, I forgot. Sorry, Nina.” She sent an apologetic smile in my direction.
It low-key hurt my already broken heart, but I just shrugged it off. I didn’t want to show anyone my emotions.
“What does he want?” I asked them confused.
“It’s the full moon tonight which means we have the meeting and the feast. Catherine can come to both if she wants. The King and Queen want to formerly meet her.” I groaned aloud.
“Again?” I asked them.
Caleb gave off a small chuckle. “Nina, it happens every full moon.”
“Yo, if I get kidnapped again, someone is going to be in trouble,” I said jokingly.
At first, it didn’t appear that they noticed that I was joking as they both tensed.
“Relax guys, I’m only kidding.”
“Babe, don’t kid like that,” Reed said to me.
“You guys need to lighten up. I’m over it
. You guys should be too.”
As I was waiting for their reply, Catherine jumped in on the conversation.
“Wait, you were kidnapped?” Catherine said freaking out.
“Chill Cath, there isn’t anything to worry about.”
“Uh-huh, sure.” She replied. “Pretty soon, I’m going to start confining you to your room. You will be on house arrest.”
“Yes Mother,” I replied sarcastically.
Catherine stuck her tongue out at me in defense. This caused Reed to break out laughing.
“Oh, now I see where Nina gets her child's side from.”
Catherine blushed from ear to ear. “I’m not a child!” She tried to defend herself.
“Down Fido,” I said to her smirking as she shot me a death glare.
“Anyway…” Caleb said trying to change the conversation. “Would you like to come Cath?”
“Umm, I don’t know…” She started.
“Yes, she will come,” I replied for her.
“I will?” Catherine asked me.
“Of course. If I have to go, you are going too.” I said flat out to her.
Reed shook his head in a submissive manner. “Alright. You two got like ten minutes to get ready.”
“Ten minutes!” Catherine yelled rushing to her room. “How do you expect me to get ready in ten minutes?!?”
I shook my head trying not to roll my eyes. “You will have to get used to it, Cath!”
She didn’t respond, obviously rushing to get her clothes on as fast as she could. “See you guys in a bit?” I asked them.
“Absolutely,” Reed said as he ran out the door.
I looked over at Caleb who had a sad expression that sprawled across his handsome face.
“What’s wrong?” I asked him.
“Just be careful at the meeting tonight.” He said to me as he was beginning to turn away.
“What does that mean?” I asked him confused.
“You will see.” That was all he said as he exited the door and walked down the hallway.
I closed the door once they were out of eyesight. I shook my head trying to clear what Caleb could have meant. I didn’t really have time to think about it as I was down to five minutes now. I quickly entered my room and put-on leather pants with a black tight-fitting t-shirt. I hurriedly brushed my hair and went into the living room. Boy was I happy I didn’t have a hundred people in here messing with my hair and make-up like I did last time. I didn’t care if I looked better then, I really wasn’t in the mood for pampering.
“Hurry up Cath! We have to go! I don’t want to be late!” I yelled in the direction of her bedroom.
“I’m coming Nina!” Cath yelled as she ran to the door. She was wearing a black sparkly dress that went just above her knees. The light refracted off of it causing light to scatter, twinkling on the walls. It reminded me of a disco ball, except it didn’t shoot off a bunch of colors. Her make-up and hair were done as well. She flattened her hair, so it was snug against her head. It flowed to her thin shoulders.
“You look nice Cath,” I said to her. “Thank you, Nina.”
“Is that what you are wearing?” She asked me confused.
“Yep. I don’t dress up. Don’t worry, they will be expecting it.”
Cath laughed, “oh Nina Nina, one day I will get you in a dress.”
I gave out a small snort.
“Good luck with that. Now, let’s go.” I said as I grabbed her hand and led her to the meeting.
Catherine did the exact same thing that I originally did, and I could not stop laughing. She walked up to the guards and tried talking to them as well. She then knocked on the door, causing someone to open it confused. Reed was the one to open it this time around.
“Nina, you didn’t.” He said in response to seeing Catherine and me.”
“It wasn’t me this time,” I said as I pointed in the direction of my sister.
“What?” She said confused. “He wouldn’t talk to me, so I didn’t know what to do and this big bully over here wouldn’t stop laughing and then I knocked like a normal person is supposed to do. How is that wrong?”
Reed chuckled. “Just come in. Nina, be nice to your sister.” He said to me.
I controlled my laughing as I entered the room.
“Always,” I replied to him, squinting my right eye in a winking manner.
I turned my head away from Reed and my heart plummeted. In my usual spot held someone that caused my eyes to widen with surprise. Someone that I did not like. Someone that caused my blood to boil and my heart to pump in my ears.
“Who is that?” Cath asked me confused by my reaction.
“Don’t worry about it,” I replied to her. “Go sit over there.” I pointed to an empty spot.
Unfortunately, the only other spot was next to Adelina herself. I didn’t want Cath to have to deal with her, so I decided I could toughen it out for one meeting.
“That’s cool. How did she even get here so fast?” I said in my head.
“Wouldn’t you like to know?” She responded.
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Of course, she was reading my mind. Why wouldn’t she be? She was wearing a huge pink puffy dress that reminded me of what a spoiled 12-year old would wear. I made my way over to Devlon first and gave him my greetings, following that, I greeted Amelia. She seemed more depressed than usual. I would have to find more information out later on about what is causing her face to sink in more. Putting on my big girl panties, I sat next to Adelina and attempted to greet her.
“Hello.” I simply said.
She growled under her breath and muttered “He’s mine.” In a threatening manner. “What?” I asked confused.
She turned to me with the devil in her eyes. Fortunately, Devlon started the meeting shutting her up in her tracks.
“I am pleased to announce that Adelina has officially joined the pack once more. She has agreed to marry Lucas on August 1st once again. Please give her a warm welcome!” He said raising his glass of wine in celebration.
Claps sounded from the room. I did the same and tried my hardest to look happy for them. Catherine glanced over in my direction to see if I was okay. I wasn’t fooling her no matter how hard I tried. Her eyes twinkled in sympathy for me. I turned my gaze away from her as they settled on Amelia. To my surprise, she wasn’t clapping like everyone else. She was looking at the table in sadness.
“What was going on with her?” I thought in my head once again.
Adelina whispered in my ear. “See, they adore me. They could never adore you. You’re just the poor damsel in distress. That is all you have ever been to them. Especially Lucas, once he found his head again, he came howling right back to me, because he knows I am what is best for him and the pack. Plus, look at you and look at me. I am beautiful, and well let’s just be nice and say that you aren’t.”
I avoided eye contact with her. How could she be so mean? What was wrong with her?
“Lucas?” Devlon spoke to him.
“Yes sir?” He asked him. “Thank you for coming to your senses boy. You learned what is right for the pack. I couldn’t be any more proud of you.” Devlon’s eyes sparkled in fondness over his son.
I couldn’t help but to rub my tongue on my teeth in annoyance.
“Thank you, father,” Lucas said stone-faced.
Devlon focused his attention back on me. “Not that I didn’t like you Nina, just you are not what’s best for the pack. I know that you know that.”
I couldn’t believe what he was saying. I simply ducked my head in acknowledgement. My heart was tearing itself apart, but I was not going to cry, especially now. I told my mother that I was done crying and for Pete sake I was going to abide by that if it was the last thing that I do. A scoff sounded from my left. I turned my head to find the source. Amelia was rolling her eyes at Devlon.
“Please Devlon, how could you ever side with Adelina?” Her eyes blazed with a fire I never knew she had.
“What do you me
an love?” Devlon asked her confused.
“Never mind that now, it’s too late. Lucas, I do not know what to say to you right now.” She said as she got up from the table and left the room.
Some guards followed her out of the room to ensure her safety.
“What was all that about?” Devlon asked us.
“No idea.” We replied in unison.
Well except for Adelina, who was too busy looking at her long pink fingernails.
I took a small sip from the wine that was in front of me. I needed something to distract myself from everything that was going on.
Cath gasped and exclaimed, “Nina, put that down!”
Everyone turned their heads to her in disbelief.
“What?” Devlon asked her confused.
Catherines face turned the usual pitch red when she was embarrassed. She didn’t reply.
“It’s okay. I’m not mad at you. I just want to know what is going on?” Devlon said coaxing her.
“Just, Nina isn’t old enough to drink yet.” Catherine started.
“Oh, I see. Now I know where Nina got that idea from as well. She was in the same boat as you when she first arrived. She refused to drink it at first as well. In here Catherine, you do not have to follow the human’s rules. We have rules here as well, but once you turn 18 you can officially drink.”
“Oh,” Catherine simply said. She picked up her wine glass and took a small sip.
“This is actually quite good.” She said smiling.
“I sure hope so, it was a 1,000-dollar bottle.”
Catherine started choking at what he said. “1,000 dollars! Seriously!” She replied.
“Cath chillax. You must get used to them spending large numbers. It’s a castle after all.” I said to her.
Lucas spoke up for the first time in a while, “I wonder who told you that?”
A small smile carved my lips as well as his. My mind began to flash back to Lucas’s and my first date where we talked about the price of the wine bottle. How we had the entire room to ourselves.
