She Turned into a Werewolf

by Karen Ruth

“Go ahead, Lucas,” I said cocking my head sideways in the direction of the animal. He let out a huge sigh and shook his head up and down in agreement.

The group began to eat together. I could tell how hungry they all were by the way their teeth ripped through the flesh and meat. It was different watching my sister eat, as this was the first time I really watched her. Well of course earlier I saw her eat a rabbit, but that wasn’t the same thing as eating a deer. I snuck a peek at what Adelina was doing. She was laying down with her eyes closed. I flashed my eyes back at the group. It was evident even without me, they still wouldn’t have enough for all of them. We needed an elk, not a deer. She had to have known this. She wanted some of us to starve. At the thought of the elk, my stomach growled. Catherine turned around to face me.

“Nina, take my place. You are hungry.”

“I’m okay Cath, eat. You are a new werewolf; you need your food as your body adapts to your changes.”

“Are you sure?” She asked me. I could tell that she was guilty about the whole ordeal.

I simply shook my head in acknowledgment, not making any sounds.

After everyone was done eating, they began to clean themselves off. Catherine decided to lay next to me while she cleaned herself. I would have helped, but I was afraid it would have just made me hungrier. Lucas laid down alone and started to clean himself off. Adelina scoffed at this.

  “What?” He asked her confused.

“You are supposed to come clean me first.” He huffed and made is way over to her and began licking her.

“You have got to be kidding me,” I said to Reed who was on the left side of me.

  “I wish.” He muttered back.

Once everyone was done cleaning themselves and Adelina felt pampered enough, we began to walk back to the clearing for the rest of the celebration. As we were walking back, we saw Devlon with some of his older pack members. He signaled for Lucas to come talk to them.

“I will be right back.” He said to us and walked over to his father’s location.

They walked together further back into the woods. I sat down on the green grass. There was no reason to waste energy standing there. My stomach growled yet again showing me its protest. I came to the realization that the last time I ate a true meal was yesterday. Yes, I did have a couple of Oreos this morning, but that is not enough to keep you sustained.

“Yesterday? Why haven’t you eaten since yesterday?” Reed asked me.

“I don’t know. I totally forgot. I was busy researching.” I said to him. “Why are you in my mind anyway?” I asked him. I wasn’t mad, just curious.

“I needed to see if you are okay. You haven’t been acting the same way since yesterday.” He replied to me. He seemed like he was worried about me.

The next thing I knew Adelina was standing right next to me.

“Is baby okay after getting dumped by Lucas? You should have known it was only matter of time before he would come running back to me. Look at me, now look at you,” she said as she waved her tail from herself to me, “I am a princess, you are nothing. Why would he even want you?” She said trying to bring me down.

I ignored her as I knew she was only trying to get under my skin.

“Oh, and I heard about your mother. To be honest, it was about time. She was quite looney, wasn’t she? I’m surprised she wasn’t killed sooner. I would have killed her myself if I would have gotten the chance. Plus, she betrayed the pack. She had a relationship with a hunter. She gave birth to an abomination, oh and in case you are wondering who that was, it was you.”

I stood up and stared at her. If looks could kill, she would have been dead right on the spot.

“Leave my mother out of this,” I growled low to her.

“Aww did I strike a nerve?” She said smiling maliciously.

  Catherine jumped up as well.

“What is wrong with you? That is our mother. She only just passed away. Have some respect.” She said to Adelina.

“Aww, the puppy was offended as well. How pathetic. You know you are the reason your mom is dead, don’t you? If you would have just been a good girl and not attracted Seth, your mom wouldn’t have tried to find you.”

  “Take that back,” Cath growled.

“Now why would I do that?” She asked us.

Reed jumped up in Cath’s defense. “Adelina stop. What has gotten into you? We all know that you are cruel, but this is a whole different level.”

She didn’t even so much as glance at him.

“What do you say to a little fighting match Cath?” Adelina said as she crouched low to the ground in defense.

“Don’t call me that. You don’t have the right. Leave me alone.” She said as she began to turn around away from Adelina.

All of a sudden, Adelina jumped at Catherine. Her body flew in the air knocking her to the ground with a thud. Adelina rolled on top of Cath and bit her ear, hard. Blood started to pool from the wound. My instincts went into overdrive. I jumped on Adelina and held her down with my weight. My teeth bared as I growled right into her face.

“Don’t you ever hurt my sister again, do you hear me? I swear I will kill you whether you are royalty or not. I will rip your throat out before you can even comprehend what is going on.”

Instead of replying, Adelina screamed, “Lucas help me!”

“Wow you can’t even fight for yourself can you Adelina. You just go after the weaker subjects, pick on them, and when things go wrong you can’t even defend yourself.”

I felt a heavy blow to my right side causing to me fly off of Adelina. “Oomph,” my mouth sounded as my body hit the ground hard. A body jumped on top of me, his touch causing a tingling sensation to spark throughout my body. I knew who it was even before I opened my eyes. He placed both his paws on my chest to hold me still.

“Nina, what on earth do you think you are doing?!?” Lucas yelled at me. “What has gotten into you lately.”

I didn’t reply. I just glared up at him.

“Tell me!” He barked at me, furious.

“Did you ever think your little princess here isn’t as innocent as she seems?” That was all I said in defense to the accusations.

“Lucas, she tried to kill me!” She whined.

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Trust me, if I would have tried you would have already been dead.” I responded coldly.

  “Lucas,” Reed tried.

Lucas threw him an deathly glare filled with alpha authority that told him to back off. He bowed his head, dropping it to the forest floor. Lucas was his alpha after all.

“Lucas, you must punish her. You cannot let her do that to me!” She cried.

  Lucas hesitated, “Adelina,” he started.

“Prove to me that you will marry me. Prove to me that you can protect me.” She said trying to convince him.

“And what would you propose that I do?” Lucas questioned.

“You know what you are supposed to do in this situation.” She said giving off an evil smile.

  Caleb's voice joined in. “Lucas… Don’t.”

Lucas threw the same face at Caleb as he did to Reed. Caleb’s head dropped as well and a whimper emersed from him.

Lucas shook his head and looked into my eyes. “I’m sorry Nina.” He said right before he slashed me with one of his nails against my right cheek. Blood splattered from the wound.

“Nina!” Catherine yelled as she tried to make her way over to me.

“Restrain her,” Lucas ordered the others. They blocked her path.

“It’s okay Cath,” I said as I mustered a smile. My wound began to throb and pour down my face. I could tell that the wound was deep enough that it would last a few days even with my rapid healing.

“Do not ever do this again,” Lucas said to me.

I then said the only thing that came to my mind.

“You are no better than Seth.” I glared at him.

He jumped off of me and let me go. He tried to act like it didn’t bother him, but I knew bet
ter. A quick flash of pain radiated from his face.

“That is all? You call that a punishment?!” Adelina freaked out.

Lucas shot her a glare that told her to back off. To my surprise, she actually listened. I guess even Adelina is scared of Lucas when he gets mad.

I turned around to leave, “come on Catherine, let’s go.” I said to her.

The pack let her run to me.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Lucas asked me.

“We are going back, alone.” I responded not looking back at him.

“No, you are not, you are staying here.” He ordered me, trying to use his alpha voice.

I gave out a small chuckle. “You’re not the only alpha here Lucas, I’m done listening to you.” I said to him, my back still turned.

“No, but I am your prince.”

“Then I will fix that, we are leaving. Is that okay with you Catherine?” I asked her.

  “Absolutely.” She replied.

“Nina, you can’t.” Lucas said conflicted.

“I’m not staying here anymore. I do not even know who you are anymore Lucas. You used to be my happiness, my joy. Now, I don’t even recognize you.” I said to him.

“Nina, wait.” I heard Reed said.

I turned around to face him.

  “I’m coming with you.”

  “Reed, stay.” Lucas ordered.

“Man, I don’t even know you anymore. You are not my friend anymore, I do not know what happened to him, but he is not you. My friend wouldn’t have ever hurt a girl, let alone Nina.”

  He stood next to me.

  “Thank you, Reed,” I replied.

“Nina is my alpha now and I’m only going to listen to her.” He said to Lucas once again.

  “Fine.” He replied.

Before I knew it, Jeremiah, Dante, Caleb, and Eli, all came over to me.

“Goodbye Lucas,” we all said as we made our trek back to the clearing without him and Adelina.

“Are you ok?” Catherine asked me.

“Shh, I’m completely okay. What about you?” I asked her as I looked at her ear.

It was swollen, and dried blood was accumulated on the wound site.

  “It hurts.” She admitted.

“When we get back, we should put some ice on it,” I instructed her.

She shook her head once up and down.

“You too Nina,” Eli said to me. “You should put ice on that as well. It looks like it will last a few days, but you shouldn’t scar at all unless you let it get infected.” Eli told me.

“I’ll be okay, but thanks Eli.”

“No problem.” He responded. “I can’t believe Lucas would act like that. Especially to you. I get that he is trying to be tough for Adelina and the pack, but he is going too far. He needs to get his mind straight. There is only so much that we should have to deal with.” Eli said while shaking his head.

“I have been best friends with him since we were children, and he has never acted this way. He was always the noble one. I never saw him do anything bad to a woman. He was too much of a gentleman for that.” Reed shook his head. “Plus, you know what we think of our females. I don’t understand how Adelina would be that much above you. I mean I get that she is a royal in Britain, but that’s not here. She isn’t married to anyone yet. Sure, they are engaged, but that doesn’t mean he has to do everything that she says. She is going to destroy him if we don’t do something about it.” Reed went on.

I shook my head in agreement. “But what can we even do?” I asked them.

Everyone shook their shoulders. “At this point, I have no idea.” Eli responded.

Dante chipped in, “Usually we would say that you would be our best bet in convincing him in anything, but after the stunt, he pulled tonight, I don’t think that would work.”

Caleb shook his head in agreement.

“Plus, I don’t think Adelina will let Nina anywhere near him. She’s not smart but she isn’t dumb either. She knows that Nina and Lucas truly belong together. She knows that they are fated to one another.” Caleb chimed in.

“Ha, right now being with Lucas is the last thing I want,” I said angrily.

Part of me knew this wasn’t true. No matter what happened between us, I would always forgive him. Even when something this dramatic happened.

Reed gave me a small smile and lowered his head. “You know that isn’t true Nina.”

“Well, it is if I say it is.” I retorted.

“Come on guys, leave her alone. I think she has been through enough for the day.”

“Thanks, Jeremiah,” I uttered to him.

He shook his head once in acceptance.

“We better hurry up and get back before everyone begins to wonder what happened to us.” Reed said to the group.

“Do you think it is okay for me to show up with a bloody face?” I asked them.

“Oh, it doesn’t look that bad.” He said bumping into me with is butt.

  “You sure?” I asked him.

“Nah, I was trying to be generous. With your white fur, it really sticks out.”

“Oh, thanks dude.” I said as I stuck my tongue out at him.

“Just go back inside and try to avoid as many people as possible,” Caleb said to me.

“Alright,” I said as we entered the clearing.

Just like Caleb said to do, I scurried straight to my clothes and changed. I immediately ran to the building avoiding all contact with people. Hopefully not too many people saw me. I didn’t want to start any drama tonight.

As I was walking through the darkened candle lit hallway, a figure approached me. Quickly, I whipped my head to the side not wanting the werewolf to see my face. Amelia sprinted up to me with great concern on her face. I wasn’t fooling her in the slightest.

“Oh my gosh, Nina! What happened!” She cried out.

“It’s nothing….” I got cut off by her tilting my head in her direction to get a better look at the bloodshed mess.

The blood dripped from my chin, splashing the floor.

“That’s not nothing Nina. Who hurt you,” she prompted.

“Nobody, I just fell in the woods and scratched my cheek against the tree.” I lied.

“Nina, I’m not stupid. I can tell that’s werewolf claw marks,” she retorted while crossing her skinny arms over her chest.

“Which one of us did that to you?” She questioned further.” My mind raced to come up with another lie.

“I..” I stammered not sure what to say.

Without saying a word, Amelia walked up to me and sniffed my face. Her body was rigid.

“My son did this to you?” She questioned me confused and shocked.

I shook my head very slowly while closing my eyes.

“How could he do this?” Amelia asked me.

“Amelia it wasn’t his fault. It was mine. I did something stupid that I shouldn’t have done, and I deserved it. He was only doing what had to be done,” I quickly replied.

To my surprise, Amelia walked closer to me and wrapped me in an airtight embrace.

“I don’t care what happened, but I know that you didn’t deserve that. I am going to have a talk with my son and see what has gotten into him. I see you as a daughter whether you are mine or not. I will keep you safe Nina.” She pulled back and looked into my eyes. “If you ever need me feel free to come at any time. I mean it.” She enforced.

My eyes shimmered with withheld tears. Not because I was sad, but because I was so grateful for Amelia. She was like the mother I never truly had.

“Of course.” I simply replied not sure on what to say.

She nodded her head and let me go. “I am going to find that son of mine. You go wash up, okay?” She said to me.

“Okay,” I replied. She began walking down the long hallway. “Oh and Amelia?” I called out to her.

  “Yes, dear?” Amelia replied.

“Thank you for everything.” I said giving her a whitened smile.

  A
melia nodded her head and walked out the large door.

I walked into my room, returned to my human self, and cleaned up my face. I had a slash that probably would have needed stiches if I was a normal person and didn’t heal as quickly as I do. I had to place a rather large Band-Aid on it, just to cover the wound. After I cleaned myself up, I walked out of my room and back outside to the party.

My sister was still by the tree where I left her to change, although she did manage to transform back into her human self, she seemed rather uncomfortable.

I walked up to her and asked, “what’s wrong?”

Obviously, she didn’t hear me walk up as she pretty much jumped right out of her shoes.

“Oh, hey Nina, nothing really. I just don’t know many people. I really only know your pack and that’s it. Even within them I only know Reed and he’s hanging out with people over there.” She nudged her head in his direction.

I felt bad for her. I was in the same boat as her. I didn’t know anyone outside the pack either, but I wouldn’t tell her that. I want her to be comfortable around everyone.

“Why don’t you go over to them?” I asked her.

She gave me a horrified face. “I couldn’t do that! I don’t want to intrude!”

“Oh, come on Cath. I highly doubt Reed will think you’re intruding. Go on. I’m sure his friends would love to meet you.’ I said trying to convince her.

“You think so?” Cath asked me.

“Yes, I think so. You are a female after all. All male wolves will want to meet you.” I said while giving a small chuckle. Her face turned beat red.

“Nina!” She yelled at me covering her face.

  I laughed even harder.

“Go meet them Cath,” I retorted pushing her towards the group.

She turned back at me and gave me a death glare. To my surprise, she turned back towards them and walked over. They of course greeted her immediately and Reed put his arm around her.

“Be careful with my sister,” I warned him. “You better keep her safe.” He turned to me and gave me a white smile.

“Always.” He replied and turned around to face his friends.

I was glad Catherine went to the group to make new friends. Unfortunately, that left me all alone. I surveyed the area. There were groups of different werewolves all over the clearing. I looked up at the full moon. My inner wolf smiled with joy. Oh, how she became so energized by the moon.
